Fan Finance for 3D Sculpted Miniatures by Stinger & Dak
« on: 29 January 2017, 21:39:31 »
First off let me apologize for taking an extra month to get this posted, I originally wanted to have this up before the end of 2016, but things did not go according to plan. So onto the reason we have this thread. Both Stinger and Dak have 3D sculpted several miniatures that would fall into the Web Only Category for Iron Wind Metals. IWM normally selects a few design for the Web Only (does not seem that way at times with how they get released), but we wanted to give every one a options to help get some or all of these fine designs  that Stinger and Dak have created into miniature form. This is also a stop gap to help the Fan Finance keep moving on until I can get everything worked out for the next official Fan Finance round.

So for the design on the list below, Mechs are still $800 (smaller Militia Mechs might be different) and Vehicles $500, the funds will go towards the CAD work to the sculptor, 3D Printing the Masters and some towards molds. The reason some is going towards the printing and mold costs is to help pay some of the initial start up cost need to get the design into production. The Centurion D will have a different cost that I need to find out since it will be new variant parts, not a entire new mini.

Fan Finance Guidelines will still be used, but since we have a list of designs to choose from post your top three. After a week or two depending on number of posts I will total it up and see what we have and go from there. This is a bit new and I want to see the response.

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,

First, thanks for giving us folks here the opportunity for input. However, I've got a question before I pick my top three: the images you posted, are those models pretty much final, or are they just mock ups? I'm wondering how much things are likely to change from what we see in the renders. Thanks!

Both Dak and Stinger have worked on the designs, but they have not gone through IWM QCC forum for any adjustments that might be need.

What we really need for artillery is a 3025 tech sniper unit or I would vote for the Padilla,
The J-37 would be nice as we don't have many cargo vehicles for convoy scenarios unless you want to kitbash something
While not the greatest primitive, I do love the look of the Bellerophon O0

Hello everybody, really loving the enthusiasm you guys are pouring out!

A minor re-introduction: I'm Dak, I've been here pretty much the whole time, I'm a founding CamoSpecs painter, I've done numerous GenCon dioramas, and I work on lots of various art projects with Catalyst (notably Touring the Stars, some Combat Manuals work, and the recent holiday offerings). A little less than a year ago, I decided to 'take a crack at' some 3D modeling (using Trimble's free Sketchup program). Since then I guess it sort of got away from me. :D You can see where we're at today!

First, thanks for giving us folks here the opportunity for input. However, I've got a question before I pick my top three: the images you posted, are those models pretty much final, or are they just mock ups? I'm wondering how much things are likely to change from what we see in the renders. Thanks!
The images Speck posted are renders of the actual 3D files we've made. In most cases the models aren't so finalized that they can't be adjusted. As Speck also mentioned, they will go through the usual QCC measures as they approach production, and I'm willing to entertain suggestions from this forum and certainly any of the funding individuals.

Buster Militiamech (Are we getting weapon options?)
I wouldn't rule that out. It should be pretty easy to make the current weapons swap out for some different ones. (Note this mini's art will probably need approval from Catalyst to become official.)

Quickdraw 8P - but please, please modify the left arm pose to be supporting the right hand weapon. Rules require a hand-held pod to be held by both hands before it can be fires.
That's going to be quite a tall order. That left arm is REALLY stubby and the flexible joints are really inhibitive. It has the 'extended actuators' quirk but it might get pretty silly looking...like Mr. Fantastic stretchy arms lol. I'll try!

Also, what book is the Bellerophon in?
Experimental Technical Readout: Primitives, Volume 3

And just one more comment, the Padilla has 3 separate barrels sculpted. The original 3145 PDF TRO, the art/Dark Age version, and the stats version in the print TRO 3145.

Thanks everybody!
Dak

We can ask for no more, and I thank you for considering it! After all, it's a classic example of fan-nerd obsessing over a detail that really doesn't matter :)

I mean, I love the Billyruffian, but buying a mini which can only serve as a statue in-game seems a little odd to me :)

I was actually joking, given I seem to be the only one with any interest in an accurised Quickdraw 8P ... mind you, I did kitbash an 8X, so yes I know I'm weird.

If I may be so bold, having seen the larger image (which is lovely), forget making the left arm reach across. You'd almost have to do a GW type approach - the figure has arms to the elbow, and the weapon & both forearms are a single piece. Don't stress it.

Hi All!

Just a heads up, I posted some pics of painted examples of these minis over in the miniatures boards, take a look!

Hellspawn: http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=56190
Catapult: http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=56189

Also, a few other things!

The Centurion Omni D, though it is showing a Fed Suns logo in the shield, I am hoping for a full set of 5 logos to put into the blister.  One for each great house.

The Catapult is a personal favorite of mine from MWDA, and I took the initiative to make a model of it.  I personally expect (I have no actual knowledge) that the Catapult II will be released as a standard distribution release in the future.

The Hellspawn was born out of me being disappointed in the existing model, in many respects.  I used every piece of reference material I could find for it, including some rarely seen concept art from MW4 that I happened to find.

And as mentioned, these minis have yet to go through the QCC process.  There may be changes in both details, scaling, and posing before going to a production miniature.

None of the others really tickle my fancy.

I am not sure if I can Lead Fundicator this time around (I have a few challenges going on concurrently at home and at work) so I may have to give someone else the opportunity to be the Lead Fundicator this time.

I seem to be the only one with any interest in an accurised Quickdraw 8P ...

You couldn't be more wrong! It was that pesky limitation on votes. The Quickdraw and Daedalus should really also be on my list!

Daedalus

Thank you for that vote for what is probably the best Solaris VII 'Mech ton for ton!  O0

Those of us on the 8P train,

a) all OK with NOT having two-handed weapon grips?
b) How many thinking already of subbing them for 'normal' Quickdraws ;)

I can live with "a", but I also wonder if there is a solution to be had with alternate poses, like aiming the weapon to the side across the body, rather than straight ahead.

Mostly though, I just think it's kinda cool looking.

like aiming the weapon to the side across the body, rather than straight ahead.

Two problems with that, the artwork shows a very large 'ammo box' hanging underslung on the right arm, that box prevents the arm from bending toward the body (I already had to drastically size the box width down just to get it to appear there). Some of the other weapons wouldn't have the ammo box and might work, but that would mean the RAC for one couldn't be swapped in.

The other (minor) issue is that the torso fixed cockpit makes it look like the 'Mech is staring straight ahead, to aim the weapon the pilot would be looking out the side windows. Not a deal breaker but it does sort of fly in the face of pleasing aesthetics. :)

Ya know...it's odd, I haven't been able to get on for a while due to the site being down...as well as being just busy, but I did have a thought about why the Hellspawn wasn't voted for a resculpt. Now...it's been suggested! LOL

Speck...am I able to use any pledge money I would offer towards my business purchases? If so...I'd fund whole minis myself.

As far as the list goes...

From Dak's List...
Von Rohrs
Bellerophon
Volkh

I'd really like the Primitive Wolverine but others are long over due.

Ok, honesty time: I actually thought it would either be cruel to IWM to have them try to mold the Porcupine in a sane number of parts, or cruel to the fans to have to install all those spikes!

Also, in my case at least, I didn't vote for those mechs entirely because I wouldn't play with them much. It had nothing to do with the quality or aesthetics of the sculpt.

Unfortunately for the sculptors, I have to agree with sadlerbw. I have one - exactly one - Solaris VII mini.

Would rather see the Anzu in print - them I'll use, for example. But I can understand the appeal to the sculptors.

So, to comment on this, the Anzu was a TRO released mini with decent appeal. We can likely expect to see it as a distribution mini in the future. All of these proposed sculpts are not going to be in distribution, but online only. Hence why they need fan funding. The Anzu will not need fan funding at all...

Has Speck finished moving houses yet? It's been a week since anyone posted any votes. Can we at least get an official count result? I'm sure everyone is eager to see the winners come to life.
Why not Zoidberg?

Only thing I am going to ask, for all that is Holy..... please, either repose the Von Rohrs, or make it possible for us to do......
The only thing I see, when I see the current art is "Go Go Power Ranger"

UNI
BUSTER
J-37

I really want to see the Uni and buster happen. Now, would the J-37 be smaller than the MWDA one? Many of the MWDA vehicles and IWM vehicles are either the same size, or have a negligible size difference. If it will stay the same size, I can get J-37s off of eBay and repaint them.

I would love, in the next financing period, for the Swordsman to be considered.

Speck...am I able to use any pledge money I would offer towards my business purchases? If so...I'd fund whole minis myself.

Speck...ever get any update on this?

So, I am going to make one more case for Fan Financing the Hellspawn here.  We've stalled around $425, and many of you in this thread voted for the Hellspawn, so let's see if anyone just missed the boat!

Anyone else looking to help finance this guy?

That looks so detailed! I would like painting that. It's great that there's a missile door too.

That is the first 3D rendered mini that I have liked based upon the rendering. (to date, I have always waited for the mini to see if it changes my opinion of it which usually happens. I just don't care for 3D renders for some reason.)

I am glad you like it!

I am having 2 prototypes 3D printed and should have them in hand middle of next week.  I literally took that exact model, in that exact pose, and had it printed :)

I'll be sure to show it off!

Please do! I'm getting some serious MW4 Nolstalgia with this one.

Two left, Von Rohrs (Just posted Funding thread for) and Bellerophon. Both of these Dak will be doing.
