i stuck a fuel cell engine in an SRM carrier

It has armor now. You could ditch 2 SRM-6 and upgrade the engine to 4/6 speed as well.

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

Who's the intended market for this? Does anyone actually buy SRM Carriers with the intent of reusing them? I know I don't.

Same as the vanilla SRM carrier, city garrisons and Capellan police.  10 SRM6s is a whole lot of tear-gas. #P

either we add armor or come up with a rule for remote firing for this type of vehicle, ie must be within 2 hexes
crew may be in bunkers or whatever, they are using cameras to aim with
basically the same as weapon turrets

Yes people occasionally reuse them. (Aside from re-purposing then as Artillery carriers)

substantial. the fuel cell costs about three times as much. the question is would combat attrition require you to but the ICE type at a great than three-to-one clip over time. Probably not. I never have to concern myself with c-bill cost so it wasn't a consideration in the refit.
