The future is Interface. The Touman will not like it. The public will think it another suicidal warrior proclivity. But with the Wolves deploying their Skinwalker the widespread deployment of Interface Cockpits is an inevitability. The tactical benefits are too great.
Institutionally we are going to have to institute measures to limit the consequences of EI use. Fortunately, huge strides have been made in the last century, limiting the damage, but for those warriors on a command path we may need to limit cockpit time or provide specialist command ‘Mechs.

We are in a fortunate position that the Raven Alliance has already completed much of the work for managing EI and designing Interface systems. They are more than willing to share the Skinwalker with us. The quid pro quo is access to our production. This is totally reasonable as the production assets will remain within our jurisdiction.

With that in mind design work has begun on a series of Interface ‘Mechs to fill existing niches within the Touman. Where possible existing units have been modified to minimize retooling needs.

Unfortunately, the mischances of war have left those ‘Mechs unavailable to us. Intended as the workhorse Omnimech of the Clan, the Onikuma shares features of the Mad Dog, Arcas, Kuma, and Karhu. Odin Manufacturing has based the Onikuma upon the Karhu chassis though Bergan has been ordered to source the electronics this time. Ferro Lammelor armor was considered but space limitations prevented it being an option. The benefits can be seen in the A and B variants. The Taipan is clearly evolved from the Viper. Outside the Interface cockpit the major changes are pod mounted jump jets, the adoption of Ferro Lamellor armor, and a Chameleon LPS. Pod space is slightly reduced. The CLPS is a notable change in doctrine brought about by the increasing firepower and accuracy of weapon systems. Fortunately, the Wolves have already broken the taboo on concealment systems.

Really like these, but a couple thoughts.

You might want to turn off emoticons in the second post.

Supercharger + JJ really hits the BV; if you're mounting the supercharger, I would suggest dropping the JJs and going for something else. The ERPPC seems to feature a bit too prominently in those configurations as well: it's present in every Laughing Jack and Grand Executioner design.

On that note, what's the meaning being "Laughing Jack"? Doesn't sound very Dominion-ny to my ears; doesn't invoke any bears nor ghost/specters. Am I missing a reference?

Also, there's a notable lack of ultra autocannons, particularly the UAC/20. The Ghost Bears/Dominion rather like autocannons, particularly the big ones, and the UAC/20 is produced in the Dominion itself (as is the Series 7K ERLL, btw), and so should really feature in at least one of their designs. Maybe something like this.

Since the original Executioner never had it, a design with the LB-20X would also add some variety.

Actually, i think a HAG/40 with 5 tons of ammo could easily be filled in there. Give it an ECM, ERLL, a couple of ERML and probably fit something odd like a Plasma Cannon in there.

The very limited crit space but large pod space leads to some curious restrains; it forces the design to take weapons that take up the most mass per crit space, so pulse lasers get heavily favored over the regular ER versions.

The Interface cockpit is something that the WoB was working on and deployed it in TINY numbers towards the end of the Jihad.  It uses the VDNI link (http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Vehicular_Direct_Neural_Interface ) and is also adapted from Protomech technology.  The pilot sits in the Mech's chest and controls it from there, replacing the gyro as he/she becomes that. 

In Experimental TRO Republic 3 the Clans show off the Skinwalker - http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Skinwalker_(Ryoken_III) which uses a development of this and seems to be the same system, combining a form of PA(L) for the pilot and the interface cockpit.  We don't know if the Clans will have access to the buffered VDNI stuff but its brutal. 

-1 to gunnery and piloting, before you pay any points for a Clan pilot (which usually are an extra -1 to gunnery/piloting).  Combined together its a fearsomly powerful feature.  For example if you was willing to spend the points on it and give the Skinwalker a Clan pilot you'd get -3 to your shooting with its primary guns.  Meaning it WILL hit you pretty much no matter what you do.  And it can do that at absurd range.

Because that's not how omnimech work. You can't rip out endo-steel in an omni variant.

Going back to the designs, maybe name the Laughing Jack to something like Draugr. It's a Norse and death-themed name, which makes sense for the Dominion. Also, since this design is very much a zombie mech, it fits to the design's theme as well. There's also an excessive reliance on targeting computers; maybe swap out the TCs on some designs for more weapons/HS/JJs.

I would suggest putting more of the Ferro-Lamellor crits into the side torsos so the arms have more crits available to them. It forces more weapons into the arms, freeing up the torso for other jobs (like BA). Alternatively, put more of the endo-steel into the arms and remove the armoring from those actuators, focusing more weapons into the torso.

Overall, too much TC - is it really needed with the interface cockpit? Standard pulse lasers are getting a -4 bonus stacked up like that...

Onikuma Prime - has no streak ammo #P.

The current weapons selections seem a bit monotone; what about Plasma cannons and ATMs?
Or AP Gauss, Micro lasers, and Heavy lasers on the smaller mechs?

Love of auto cannon. Do we? This is as much a flanderization as any other. Historically we are looking at Storm Crows (but we prefered the LBx10 carring C), Summoners, Executioners, and Kingfisher. Oh I guess the Kodiak. Note the AC variants were mostly not the most popular and I struggle to think of a LBx20. (Ah. Grizzly 2) The FMWC RATs are illustrative despite what the same book says about big gun love.

Also Xeno. There is no evidence that the Dominion makes UACs. The Objectives only goes as deep as Mech chassis. You can make some educated guesses about equipment but it is mostly restricted to targeting and comms.
The Dominion probably DOES make UACs. It seems obvious. Possibly multiple versions though I can't think of one outside the Kodiak. (Omnis don't list weapon models) But that isn't proof positive. On the evidence available they could just as easily import them all. Food for thought when making assertions like the above.

Side torsos are tricky. They are good places for TCs and JJs so require a certain amount of free space. Also you need to pad out the engine crits. In most cases any big weapon will spread from the arms to the side torsos quite happily.


Yes, there is opportunity for many other varients. Honestly I considered just Primes. Posting 5 Mechs at once it a lot to digest without half a dozen variants each.

XXLs have a place. You need to watch the extra heat so the gains can be lost in HS. Obviously it works better with the bigger engines.

Don't hard mount the Supercharger. If something can pod mounted keep it in the pod. Unless you want tje flavor like the original Omnis.

I know they're pretty shit, but I wasn't going for optimal builds here. Somewhat the opposite, in fact; the Bears/Dominion have a penchant for getting designs that are... somewhat suboptimal. Kuma, anyone?
It's also why the heavy prevalence of TCs is concerning. TC + Interface everywhere feels a little cheesy.

Was there a reason you never armored the cockpit? Is there a rule preventing that on cockpits?

Don't forget the Executioner has three versions with the UAC/20 (but none with the LB-20X, oddly). There's also the explicit quote that Dominion warriors really like their HAGs. In fact, it doesn't look like the Dominion much favors the LB-20X, what with the Kodiak 3 being mostly made for the Snow Ravens.

Oh, I also found a name that might fit better than Taipan as well: Lolo. Named after the Madagascarophis lolo, a species of snake whose common name is "ghost snake".  ;)

...ok, so it doesn't sound quite as cool as "taipan", but the connections, man!

At this stage cheese is a virtue. As the world expands you can tone it down to suit the environment.

True, but it feels like pretty much all the examples have them. It also affects things like the BV, which is already incredibly high thanks to the Interface cockpit.

It would seem my memory has failed me; I was sure I read about how young Dominion warriors really liked the HAG, but I have gone over all my TROs and a few other books and couldn't find anything.

I really hate the fallibility of memory. >:(

Well, "bibilava" is snake/serpent. I don't know if you can use "lolo" with that, though, since "ghost" would become an adjective to the noun "snake", and Malagasy probably has case rules for modifying adjective vs nouns. I also don't know where the adjective goes in Malagasy; before the noun, or after?

Sounds cool. Provides a wider selection of armament options for the design for when the JJs aren't needed. I feel that every Omnimech should have at least one "oddball" design that doesn't quite fit the aesthetic/design direction of the rest.
