A very odd mech, the Tukayyidan
« on: 19 July 2017, 20:27:37 »
Now this is one weird creature, a late Clan Invasion design that uses all kinds of very advanced hardware, but still manages to have a BV below that of many Succession Wars era mechs of the same weight.  This is a medium Trooper in general, but shines at guarding LRM support units and screening for scouts.  Even though the Thumper Cannon is mediocre in the grand scheme of things, there's just a psychological effect of knowing that their mech will take that 5-point hit every turn that keeps people from putting scouts into the cannon's range.

Overview:
Initially a direct field upgrade to the Trebuchet, the Tukayyidan was created
specifically as a counter to the Dasher omnimech.  Obviously, the
re-christening of the mech as "The Tukayyidan" was a direct jab at the Clans
and their historic loss at the Trial of Refusal at Tukayyid.

Aside from the advanced reflex-fire systems and wide area-of-effect
"SuperFlack" cannon are impressive technologically, the TKD-SX1 is rather
anemic in the mid-to-long range battlefield, and only mildly impressive in
closer ranges where its ten tubes of SRMs are all it has to show for itself
with no energy weapon backup.  For these reasons, the mech never really took
off, remaining a refit-curiosity in Steiner-Falcon (and later Steiner-Wolf
Empire) border planets.

Though it is a part of the standart upgrade kit, depending on the model of
Trebuchet used for the refit, techs may sometimes not even bother with
upgrading the heatsinks to Double-capacity models.

I probably would have just used an arrow IV, and put some medium lasers on instead of the MMLs.

Thumper cannon is kinda neat, though I'd love to see a second ton of ammo for anti-air use.

I'm 90% sure I've seen that mech before, at least twice. :P Yeah, it would be more efficient use of a chassis, it definitely would be a more support-focused design rather than a bodyguard, it wouldn't benefit from the AES, and it most definitely wouldn't have only three digits of BV.

There are a good few critical slots open, if I turned on fractional accounting, I could take a half-ton out of the MML SRM bins to add an extra half-ton Thumper ammo bin (actually, probably a shot or two more than half a ton, because Heavy Ferro is never an even tonnage number, I might gain a couple of usable kilograms from switching to fractional mode)
