Ouch, one Nightlord down along with up to a full galaxy's worth of Elementals and any troops from Donnegal too.  I don't know if the Talon will be salvagable, and the Missiispsiossisispisisiei is beaten up quite badly but not enough that she couldn't get away.  Thats a good trade for one frigate, and the Black Prince is damaged but not too severely.
From the sounds of it, and the fact it tried to jump, it probably isn't salvageable.  But I wouldn't argue against it, the Lyrans could use a heavy hitter like a Nightlord.

Quote
This leaves what, 2 Falcon BB's at Odessa and significant forces en-route to engage the Falcon forces in system.
Just one, the other is a heavy cruiser.  This leaves a Nightlord 2 and a Texas unaccounted for at present.

A Potemkin can take on anything pretty much shy of a McKenna although its not something you'd want to risk either as they are pretty much irreplacable.
If this were the standard setting, I would agree with you, but with the glut of warships available in the setting there are quite a few smaller ships which can give the Potemkin a run for its money.  The Falcons have Black Lions and Jade Lions which are each, on paper, more than capable of taking a Potemkin in a straight fight - escort dropships, unless there are scads of them (and this one is carrying a significant number of ground troops, so is unlikely), probably won't seriously effect the battle, Black Lions have nearly three times the firepower and almost equivalent armor as a Potemkin.  Jade Lions have more than twice the firepower and equivalent armor (if not a bare bit more).  Patriots, again on paper, are slightly weaker than Potemkins with roughly double the firepower, but half the armor, where they take it though is range, they are much shorter ranged than Potemkins, and with escorts the Potemkin pulls out significantly ahead.

Great update Dragoncat!

Next part there will be one further update to this side story which will take place one week after this update.

Main Battlesite, Outskirts New Bealton
Odessa, Donegal Province
Lyran Commonwealth
7th January 3111

After watching the WarShips that had been sent to defend him move against the Falcons in the Donegal system Victor Steiner-Davion had decided that he would not sit on the sidelines when they finally reached Odessa.  Now he sat in Prometheus’ cockpit surrounded by warriors of the McKinnon’s Raiders Regiment as they stalked the Jade Falcons who were steadily retreating from battle.

The entire situation on Odessa had confused Victor when his combined force had arrived in system the two Jade Falcon WarShips were near the Gabriel Facility and were surrounded by assault DropShips and almost a galaxy’s worth of aerospace fighters.  The combined Inner Sphere task force of Star League, Lyran Commonwealth and Draconis Combine WarShips remained near Odessa providing complete aerial dominance which made the Falcon’s life even harder.  Why the Falcons had pushed to Odessa after retreating from Donegal Victor did not really know but now their forces were being pushed to breaking point by the Inner Sphere ground forces which had been reinforced by the survivors of the First Commonwealth Guards and the SLDF’s Third Special Operations Group who the Jade Falcons had failed to finish off.

“Jade Falcon commander, this is Commander Victor Steiner-Davion surrender your forces, before you are completely destroyed.”  He said marching his assault OmniMech towards the Jade Falcons.

“The little prince himself” a voice almost snarled over the comms in response.  “I will not surrender my force to you.”  She said from the Falcon line a single Shirke BattleMech stepped clear of the main Falcon lines “I challenge you to single combat, Commander.”

“And why would I accept your challenge Clan Commander our forces significantly outgun your own?”

“Because I am Khan Jana Pryde leader of the Jade Falcons and if you defeat me little prince you will not only capture my forces but Jade Falcon offensive operations against the Lyran Commonwealth will end.”  She replied

“And if you are victorious?”  He asked knowing there would be a price.

“Other than the satisfaction of being the one who killed the little prince?”  She asked taunting him he scanned her BattleMech as she spoke it was five tons lighter and carried less firepower than his OmniMech and but it was far more manoeuvrable.  “You let my Falcons leave this world with what we have won and unmolested and you leave this border.”

“I accept” he said stepping Prometheus clear of the allied line.  On his right he noticed two communications lines were active he reached down and toggled both switches “yes, gentlemen” he said addressing Colonel Canin McKinnion and Commanding-General Victor Focht.

“Sire, I was sent to protect you I can’t do this if you volunteer to engage what could be the most dangerous Falcon on this planet.”  On his sensors he saw McKinnon’s Warhawk angling towards him fro the right-hand side.

“Victor, you were sent to advise and assist SLDF operations if anyone should be fighting this battle it should be me.”  Focht said his own Avatar OmniMech closing on his position.  "We should overwhelm them."

“Negative both of you listen I have her attention and I have the BattleMech to finish her off with.  She has challenged me and I have accepted substituting someone else will break the rules of the Trial, the Clanners will declare it void regardless of our victory.”  He said moving Prometheus another step forward “I’m doing this just make sure if she is victorious we stick with this agreement breaking it will bring hell from all of the Clans.”

-------------

Victor moved Prometheus to the side engaging with his pair of large lasers one went wide while the other burned down the side of enemy Shirke.  In response the great “BirdMech” leapt into the air its wings opening as the assault Mech took to the air triggering both of its own large lasers and its large arm mounted HAG Rifle.  Both lasers found their mark on Prometheus’ left leg while the HAG peppered Victor’s Mech’s torso.

“So you can shoot” Victor said halting his eastward course and turning back west towards his target.  As he closed all three pulse lasers lit up showing they were in range and Victor sent a green volley of pulse laser fire into the Shirke as it came into land the lasers burning across the enemy Mech’s torso.  The Shirke landed gracefully as if it had not just lost almost two tons of armour and again engaged with its lasers and HAG causing yet more damage to Prometheus’ left leg and torso.  Victor looked at the armour even with the hits the Dire Wolf had taken it could weather several more before an armour breach.  With his run taking him ever closer to the Shirke soon his autocannon would come into play and it would be game over for the Jade Falcon Khan.  He continued to fire triggering his pulse lasers as the Shirke engaged with lasers while containing to close.

With the range closing Victor let loose with his ultra autocannon blasting a great hole in the left torso of the Shirke ripping a large laser and part of the Jade Falcon Mech’s over shoulder wing from the chassis.  The Shirke returned fire with its remaining laser and short range missile launcher Victor smirked pulling the trigger on his autocannon again this time the autocannon sounded like it got about half way through its firing cycle before.

CHINK, CHINK, CHINK, as metal ground against metal and the autocannon jammed.

“NO! NO! NO!”  He shouted instinctively pulling the firing triggers with his left hand firing his SRMs and pulse lasers at the Falcon Mech as his right hand tried to recycle the autocannon and clear the jam his OmniMech was slammed by another laser blast and the Shirke’s HAG as the Falcon Khan continued to fire before the BattleMech’s right hand slammed into Prometheus scouring over the  top of the OmniMech ripping the SRM system from it’s housing Victor felt like his Mech was being ripped apart piece-by-piece.  He triggered both of his large lasers again as he tried to clear the jammed autocannon kicking out with his Mech’s leg shattering the left knee of Shirke.

The Falcon BattleMech twisted slamming the the HAG barrel into Victor’s OmniMech at the last moment Victor twisted his Mech away from the incoming barrel as Khan Jana Pryde pulled the trigger on the weapon sending concentrated shots into the Prometheus’ hull.  Victor felt the engine shielding being damaged and the cockpit becoming a furnace before gyro housing was shaken by sustained hits he felt Prometheus shaking and begin to go limp.  “EJECTING!”  Victor shouted pulling the rip cords blowing his OmniMech’s cockpit open and sending his command chair into the air away from the dying Dire Wolf.

Soaring through the air he felt the air superheat as the Falcon Khan fired her large laser into the air trying to catch his ejection chair with her fire with his back turned to the BattleMech below Victor did not see what happened next.  On the ground both McKinnon’s Warhawk and Focht’s Avatar both fired on the Falcon Shirke the Falcon Khan screamed into the communications system as she twisted her BattleMech to face the two enemy Mechs “YOU DARE BREAK THIS HONOUR DUEL!”  She snarled her BattleMech was in no condition to attack them with the smashed remains of her HAG still imbedded in the hull of the downed Dire Wolf at her feet.

“There is no honour in targeting a downed warrior” Victor Focht said speaking before Canin McKinnon could speak “we will honour the agreement that you made today with Victor, you may leave this world with your spoils of war.”

“We shall return” she said angrily looking again to the sky seeing Victor’s command chair coming down behind SLDF lines.  Unseen by the Jade Falcon Khan the command chair came down heavily slamming into a tree knocking Victor Steiner-Davion unconscious with several branches penetrating his coolant suit.

Victor has several branches penetrating his cooling vest.
Isn't the coolant poisonous when entering the bloodstream.
The inner sphere will really gang up on the Falcons if Victor dies, another Smoke Jaguar scenario. O0

Poisonous coolant is a thing of the past, they used  a none  poisonous  coolant during the first SL and i know that by this time  everyone has non poisonous coolant to.

duno about that. I mean Victor has decades of combat experience over his opponent. Just all seemed so anticlimactic...  :-\ He has never struck me as put all my faith in 1 weapon, in this case the big boom stick.

Way the character was acting, it sounded like Dragon Cat was setting him to go out fighting. Your right, he should have done better than that. There was reason he retired and lived to 105.  However, he was murdered.  I rather have him pass away at the controls of his beloved Prometheus vs murdered.

I haven’t had a chance to write for the last couple of days but I did say there was another update to come the final part of the side story.  I thought it was going to be a week later I actually think it will be a couple of months it will combine two or three scenes (hence the time change) and it will deal with the aftermath of the last scene

The annoying thing is if I could speak and it was written the scene is completely done in my head

I mean it was cool, but I thought it was even more cool in the OTL as he took out people and he was like 130 or something. Now if he had like taken on a whole star and killed like 4 of them and this was the final one that took him out I would be like "F&^% YEA!" lol

I'll be honest the final to "Old Habits" went several ways.  This one works best for my overall AU I'm not entirely sure if it works best for this character... but it does set things on a familiar, if different, path.  There are many more changes ahead that may be familiar in some ways but also different.

Anyway for everyone who has read this story and my regular AU please enjoy the ending to Old Habits

Medical Ward, New Bealton
Odessa, Donegal Province
Lyran Commonwealth
14th May 3111

In a sterile room in the main medical facility on Odessa Victor Steiner-Davion, the former First Prince of the Federated Suns, lay comatose where he had laid since his battle with Khan Jana Pryde only a few kilometres from where he now was.  When he had been found Victor was close to bleeding out his chest penetrated by branches in two places and with several broken bones.  The medics had rushed him to a medical facility but with a lung, kidney and heart damage all they could do was link him to several medical machines to keep him alive in a medically induced coma.

Beside his bed his wife Duchess Danai Centrella-Davion sat in the same chair she had for the last since his injuries waiting for him to come back to her.  During time here she’d been reminded almost daily about how much she loved him and needed him, how much he had changed her life.  Born a Canopian Princess she had become a respected warrior, fought the Clans found love and created her own life.

As one of the medical technicians checked the medical equipment Danai shifted in her chair enough to bump the bed.  “Careful dear” a weak voice said a moment or two as Victor’s eyes flicked open.

“Victor!” She said leaning in to kiss him “Victor!” She said again kissing him again.

“Easy, I still hurt a lot” he said as she leaned back he glanced up at the medical tech “wonders of medical technology eh Doc?”

“You certainly are OvKhan” the man said nodding downwards slightly the man wore Lyran medical briefs but wore a Clan Wolf insignia.  It took him several moments to think about what he had said remembering the words meant ‘honoured superior’ and that there were still Wolves in the Lyran Commonwealth.

“What happened?”  He asked as the tech raised the headboard of the chair so Victor could sit up which was agony for him but better than being unable to see her.  It felt strange for Victor to feel so tired but he guessed that was what happened when you were so badly hurt.

“You have been in a medically induced coma for the last four months since your fight with Jana Pryde.”  Danai said quietly “you had severe injuries following your ejection.”  She explained as he tried to move “stay still” she commanded “the only way for you to recover was for the doctors to put you into a coma.  Archon Steiner contacted the remaining Wolves on Gallery who agreed to attend and assist.”

   “And the rest is history?”

“You’ve had a few close calls OvKhan Steiner-Davion” the technician said “your new heart has caused the most problems” he explained “it took us some time to get it to to work with your body.”

   “What happened with the Falcons?”

“Victor Focht joined his forces with the Lyrans and assisted in liberating Alma Alta and Cameron from the Jade Falcons.”  Danai said “unfortunately the Falcons have reinforced their position by capturing several clusters from the Hell’s Horses.”  She said glancing down “and you received a message from Bannister Cameron.”  She said handing a remote to him “there’s a Tri-vid player in the corner I’ve seen it, I’ll come back in when you are ready.”  She said rising from her chair she ushered the technician out.  Victor reached for the play button and pressed it.

The message began as a hologram of Bannister Cameron appeared in the corner of the room he looked much like he had when Victor had last seen him on Terra.  “This message is for Victor Ian Steiner-Davion if he has past then please destroy this message as it will be of no concern to you.”  He said a moment later the message flicked slightly and then Bannister continued “Victor, I hope that this message finds you well, if you are seeing this message then I am dead and I have yet to appoint a successor.”  He said if this was a joke it was the worst one that Victor had ever seen “I am recording this message on the 12th November 3110.”  He said pausing to smile “I know you are probably thinking that you have not long left Terra and that I mentioned none of this.”  He said “Victor, the reason that I did not mention this is because it was your choice to go against your instincts and take the mission against the Falcons.”  He said glancing away from the tri-vid camera.

“You have told me many times over the last couple of years that your old habits were going to get you killed I think that it is your old habits that are keeping you alive.”  He said “and I need you to keep something else alive, the Star League Protectorate and the Star League Defence Force.” He said “the Protectorate needs strong leadership and I want that leadership to be yours.”  He said Victor paused the message and glanced at Bannister and then the door before playing the message “I know your argument you’ve retired, you wish to enjoy life, but I also know you also still feel a sense of duty I saw that when you served as First Lord and feel you still have much to give.”

“I have sent to the Star League Protectorate’s Council that you are my nomination to replace me as leader of Liberty and of the Star League Protectorate.”  He said stunning Victor “my friend do me this one last favour serve as the Protectorate’s first Exarch and make the Protectorate and the Star League endure until the next generation can enjoy its successes.”  He said

The message then ended and Victor was treated with a news report that showed that Bannister Cameron had been assassinated on New Canton on the 26th February 3111.  A week later Victor had been nominated and confirmed as Bannister’s replacement despite his status of being in a coma.  In practice the day to day running of the Protectorate was run by the Council while Victor was a figurehead even House Liao supported it stating it was nice to see that Victor succeeded where his father failed even if the end result was the same.  With Bannister officially also holding the title of the First Lord as well the member states decided that until the Council decided on a leader the Protectorate Council would also hold the First Lordship which technically meant that Victor was once again also the First Lord.

Ignoring Bannister’s offer and the pain he was in he called for two doctors one from the Lyran Commonwealth and one from the Wolves of Gallery.  Both agreed that while he would live for many years to come the Commonwealth doctor was sure that he would be in pain and need further treatment for the rest of his days while the Wolf doctor was convinced that the newly grown organs that were now in his body would make him as healthy as he had been twenty years before.  While he preferred the Wolf’s prognosis the great unknown bothered him.  Instead of dwelling on their findings he then called for a hospital orderly and asked for transport to the Mechbay.

-------------

Nearly three hours later Victor was sat on a wheelchair looking up at the repaired Dire Wolf OmniMech Prometheus its Lyran Guard paint scheme had been reapplied to the replacement armour which had been fitted to the OmniMech.  “Couldn’t stay away from her?”  The voice of Danai Centrella-Davion said as she walked up to him.

“I just wanted to see the thing that almost killed me, I thought it might help make sense of everything.”  He said trying to explain his motives on being here.

“That didn’t almost kill you, a crazy Clan ***** almost killed you.”  She said angrily he knew she was annoyed that he had come here before calling for her as well.

“Yes, but I was stupid enough to think I could still fight like I was thirty years younger.”  Victor admitted “it was like the first time I piloted her I thought that there was nothing I couldn’t do.”  He said looking from the OmniMech to Danai “I’ll never pilot her again.”

“The doctors said you will make a full recovery.”

“Yes, I know, and I’ll never pilot her again” he said being surer of the words this time “I will not put you through this again.”  He said raising his arms to his side despite the pain.  “I will keep that Mech I will keep up the appearance of being the warrior prince when I need to be but I won’t take her into battle that is for the past.”

“Your future battlegrounds will be more up here” she said touching his forehead Victor closed his eyes enjoying her touch “Exarch Steiner-Davion.”

“Where on earth did Bannister come up with that?”

“It was the Council not Bannister and I believe they took it from Ancient Terra’s European District during the rule of one of the first major empires.” She explained when she’d heard the title she’d immediately began reading about it.  “Bannister Cameron turned his back on the title claiming that should a Cameron take on a fancy name for his role then many would see it as the first step towards reborn Hegemony.”

“The Protectorate is that in all but name already all it lacks is its own military wing separate from the Star League Defence Force and from what I’ve ready many believe that it is only time before that happens.”  Victor said looking up at Prometheus again “when people have weapons of war it is only a matter of time before they want the power that goes with them.  It was the same with the bow and arrow, the first firearm, main battle tank, BattleMech, WarShip it doesn’t matter the type of weapon each of them brings man closer to conflict over resource and power.”

“Which Bannister wants you to keep a lid on for a little longer” she said prodding him back to the important conversation instead of chasing the reasons man made war against other man.

“I retired” he said looking back at her “and what’s to stop the member states beginning to treat the Protectorate as a new Terran March?  Linking the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth this could start a new Succession War.”

“Only if you gave preferential treatment to those states and worked against the others you’ve shown in the past a fair hand while serving as First Lord.  It does mean you’ll have to be firm with Burton and the Federated Suns but if you are able to handily that then it shouldn’t be a problem?  The Star League is fragile it has been since the Capellans withdrew and now with the Combine lowering their support these are testing times but it is not over.  And if the Star League does fall the Protectorate worlds could use a leader who knows how to win a conflict at its helm.”

“I retired” he repeated again looking back at Prometheus.

“Old habits die hard, Exarch” she said leaning over him wrapping her arm around his shoulders showing her support for his new position.

Authour Note: before anyone worries my AU won't be becoming PeaceTech following these developments.

Very surprising. He's 81 years old. Now the Ruler of the Star League Protectorate.

Sounds with Bannister Cameron's retirement, now new era in AU with Thanks has begun.

Just I thought new leader be taking over.  Victor certainly an honorable man and fair one.

What's going happen to Cameron?

Not entirely surprising, the result was a thought that had crossed my mind - once (so mostly a surprise).  I was wondering if and how the Star League would become a more permanent fixture, rather than hanging by a fraying thread.  I think Victor becoming the first Exarch is a good and logical move, I am curious how succession will end up working though, as the Fed Suns First Prince kind of has claim now.  I look forward to messiness.  >:D

Bannister was killed on New Canton on 26th February 3111.  Victor was officially put in place as an honour while in a coma with the Council running the Protectorate.  Now he's awake and planning on leading there's going to be a few ruffled feathers.

Already planned my way around  the Federated Suns AND the Lyran Commonwealth links

Why couldn't you just let Victor die? Why?

I'll answer this one because I wanted to kill him I really did but I also wanted to kill Bannister Cameron and I needed to replace him.  As strange as it sounds I didn't want to do a Devlin Stone (not specifically him but the same idea) introduce a character that no-one has heard of as Bannister's successor and have them dictate changes.  It also allows things to change up a bit as Bannister Cameron tried to avoid rocking the boat too much.

So I hatched a plan build it to look like I was killing Victor then throw you a curve ball and give him a new role.  This way I can play politics a little more both within the Star League Protectorate and the areas around it.  This way I can develop the Protectorate into a state that not only supports the SLDF (as in physically since most of their bases are there) but also to develop support characters within the Protectorate to eventually replace Victor.

His kids are still around but neither has served the SLDF very long nor built the “name” to rule

So who had Bannister Cameron killed?
The vote in favor of Victor by the Star League Protectorate’s Council if I am reading this right was well he is near death in a medically induced coma, he will never survive sure he can be the new leader and we will just rule in his place until well the end comes for him and then we will have to select a new leader, but well he will never rule it is just a final honor to him.

I'm kinda wondering if someone on Star League Protectorate’s Council is behind Bannister Cameron assassination.

considering the timeframe and an earlier update I wouldn't be at all especially surprised. nice if it is though.
