Conventional Fighters - which models do you use?
« on: 05 August 2017, 01:26:03 »

Greetings,

we are about to incorporate Aerospace elements into our combined arms games. We are starting with conventional fighters.

So we're on the search for models - we're using 1/285 (6mm) models of historical and contemporary aircraft.

My compagnon is using the whole range of 1st to 6th generation jet aircraft, I myself am aiming to use 1st generation and World War II projects and prototypes for an anachronistic look (wanting to use 6th generation plus modern projects and prototypes for aerospace later).

I already got Messerschmitt Me 262, Gloster Meteor as well as Horten Ho 229 (Gotha Go 229 , if you like ;) ) from Raiden, which I want to use as Angel/Guardian/Meteor/Boeing.

I'm eyeing the Messerschmitt 163 (found one on Shapeways) as a fourth model.

I'm still unsure of what to use as Planetlifter.

Technically the Planetlifter is not much larger than a heavy fighter (compare the 45t Meteor to the 50t Planetlifter), so I think a mid sized Bomber or Transport would be more fitting than something like, say, a C-5 Galaxy.

I would love to use something from the World War II Amerika Bomber project like the Messerschmitt Me 323 (no problem with propellers here), but there don't seem to be models in a fitting scale.

So, what do you use (if you use), what would be your suggestions?

Thanks and best regards

Hayden.

Right now I'm working on a few 1:300 C-17  models (omitting the outboard nacelles) that I'll be using as battlefield set pieces (objectives/scenery).  These are intended to work as the Manazuru aircraft, the planetlifter equivalent (knock-off?) used in the Draconis Combine.  I'll be putting two of them my interpretation of a generic civil Amphigean Agriculture Inc. scheme (for versatility, useful in a number of circumstances as targets and scenery), and the other will be in a camouflage scheme with markings similar to what I use for my Amphigean LAG aerospace.

Other than that, I have a couple 'mech busters.  Not sure if I'll ever get more.

i've often eyed the various 1:350th scale packs of naval aircraft on amazon, mostly the trumpeter and Tamiya stuff.
this would give F-14 tomcats, F-18 Hornets and super hornets, A-7 Corsairs , F-4 Phantoms, A-6 Intruders, AV-8 Harriers, Seaking helicopters, MV-22 Ospreys, etc..
not to mention Mig-29K's, Su-33's, and various non-US aircraft.

these kits are meant for customizing 1:350th scale model naval vessels, particularly the Aircraft carriers, but they should be close enough to work for battletech. and at around $12 for 6-8 aircraft models, aren't a bad deal. (there are also tank, truck, and humvee packs in the same scale, for those Amphibious assault ship fans, which would make a cheap way to get generic ground vehicles.. $12 for around 16 plastic vehicles on those)

The Trumpeter ones work GREAT. I use their SU-33s as Meteors and A-3s as Planetlifters, among others. :)

Be warned: If you go for any of their helicopters, they're often molded completely it of clear plastic, and assembly is as fun as you think...

hmm... skimming the conventional fighters section of Sarna, if i was going to use those 1:350th scale figures..

Su-27K Flanker* - Meteor Heavy fighter, definitely. (could also use the F-14 or F-4 figures for this one if russian fighters aren't your thing)
F/A-18 - Defender Medium Strike Fighter
A-7 Corsair II - Angel light fighter
AV-8B Harrier - Guardian/Boeing Jump Bomber

*sadly the Su-33 kits are currently very overpriced, probably OOP, but the Su-27K is fairly close, it just lacks the canards.

GHQ has a wide variety of real aircraft, I wish they would make some more.

Also check out Brigade models 6mm sci-fi line.  Most of the factions have fighters in their inventory.

Thanks for the ideas.

Attached a size comparison of the models I have so far:

a progression of fighters - Me 163 - Me 262 - Meteor

and the Ho 229, which I see as a bomber.

Sadly none of them looks nearly like the artwork of the conventional fighters we got in the TRO3039.  :(

I just picked up a couple of packs of 1:350 USN fighters. There's some good stuff in there! Well sized. Photos eventually.

Thread necromancy!

Vikings make great Planetlifters when you T-tail them, I've made a Meteor HSF from an F-14, and I think the F-18 will cut down to a ripper Angel LSF. But the Su-33s I've just ordered might make better Meteors.

And I've ordered some 1/30 scale Helixes for use as choppers, and some Yak-141s just because. Pics to follow.

I've been using the Veritech fighter-mode minis from my Robotech Tactics sets. 😁 they look a little like "futuristic" single-seat  F-14 Tomcats. AND they come with tons of wing mounted ordinance options! (...and I already have 20 so I need not buy any more!! 😉)
