Spacecraft Dimensions - Round Two
« on: 08 February 2016, 04:35:41 »
EDIT: image smaller size below - view separately or

click here to view warship image 2.

I'm going to try to gradually update my old ship diagrams from pixel art to vector images. I'll update in here when I can add a new one to the pile. They'll be infinitely scalable and much more versatile, suited for printing, etc.

Union DropShip and Invader JumpShip to kick things off.

Great, thanks!  I'm tagging this for the Scout JumpShip.  The version I imported into Visio required a lot of clean up to remove pixilation and is still fuzzy around the edges.

Any chance you could include a mech silhouette in the pictures for scale?

That appears to be a 10-meter background grid, so imagine a typical 'Mech as taking up one square.
Half the fun of BattleTech is the mental gymnastics required to scientifically rationalize design choices made decades ago entirely based on the Rule of Cool.

The other half is a first-turn AC/2 shot TAC to your gyro that causes your Atlas to fall and smash its own cockpit... wait, I said fun didn't I?

I'm not familiar with Visio. What image size, file type, etc. would you require?

A jpg should work, and size shouldn't matter.  I'll just stretch it to scale.  Visio is Microsoft's diagramming program.  It's a step or two above PowerPoint, but far from proper CAD software.  It's what I used to create the Mark VII and Manatee deck plans posted in the Aerospace Fan Design forum.

Leopard and Scout added (refresh page if image isn't updating).

I redid my old Leopard DropShip art to conform to Loose's TRO3057 design. It doesn't 'read' so well at such a small scale but in the interest of standardization I'll leave it for now. Also I had to fudge things a bit with the dimensions; in order for the Leopard shape to look like the TRO art - the published dimensions had to not include the vertical stabilizers.

The grid is indeed 10 metres, and I added an 11-metre tall Warhammer for kicks.

Daryk: looking at your project I thought maybe a png with no background might work better? Both posted below.

The png is great, though I had to run it through paint to make the white background transparent.  It fits the original (I suspect DS&JS) art almost perfectly, and it was MUCH less work than trying to clean that up.  Thanks again!

Cancel that - I did some fiddlin' and got the Leopard into the proper dimensions.

Overlord and Condor added. I'll start getting their names up on there soon.

Any chance you could do the original 2750 Vincent?

I doubt it, unfortunately, but never say never.

I still have 27 more of my old ships to 'upgrade' from pixel art, plus three more that I blocked out but never quite finished back in the day. Plus I always liked the 3057 designs a lot more. Add to that the fact there is so much more released from Catalyst since I started on this little project way back when ... someday I'd like to get to stuff like the Bonaventure and Dreadnought ...

Ah well, I'll keep my fingers crossed then.  Some of the 3057 versions were improvements, but I just can't bring myself to count the Vincent among them.

An Overlord docked to a Scout must be an awkward pairing....

Merchant, Buccaneer and Mule added.

The height of the Mule matches the TRO stats, but the diameter is quite a bit less (122 in the image, 158 in the stats). If I match the diameter the Mule loses all resemblance to the art in both Dropships and Jumpships and TRO3057. I think what happened is that in Dropships and Jumpships—where the dimensions were first printed—the Mule 'width' was measured with the landing legs extended out and the leg covers extending out even further. So I just tried to match the existing art, and the diameter came to 122.5 metres.

Instead of spending time trying to make the layout presentable every time I get a new ship in there - things are going to be pretty messy/disorganized until I'm closer to being done. I'm still not 100% sure how to present everything from a design perspective in its final form. If anyone has any ideas or examples of other works that look neato I love to take a look.

Scout and Mammoth or Merchant and Behemoth will take the cake i think ...

Seeker and Star Lord added.

The way I have my files set up it's easier for me to just make two images rather than enlarge the current one - so I've got separate 'regular' ship and 'warship' images that I'll add to until the final design/organization phase.

Don't forget to add an actual scale.  I forgot to do that on my deck plans, and had to go back and reload them.

Triumph and Excalibur added.

EDIT: I should note with the Excalibur - I couldn't make it look like the Loose version from TRO3057. The shape in his design just didn't fit the listed dimensions, so I went with something closer to Knutson's Dropships and Jumpships version.

Don't forget to add an actual scale.  I forgot to do that on my deck plans, and had to go back and reload them.

For sure. As I go I'm trying to brainstorm little additions like that.

As I start to layout the decks of the Scout, I think I see why the (presumed) docking collar and small craft bay are 90 degrees off.  It wouldn't take a very large dropship to block the small craft door if they were aligned, and 180 degrees off isn't possible due to the jump core.
