(Answered) ECM - How high does it reach?
« on: 05 December 2016, 11:18:08 »
ECM suite effect radius is defined as 6 hexes (TW pg 134) but beyond being described as a "bubble", no mention is made on how high (or low) the effect extends.

Errata notes that aerospace units flying at NOE attitude with ECM affect ground units but this height is apparently less than the radius of ECM effect (50m vs 180m) but considering aerospace units work on different scales, this is perhaps irrelevant.

One could assume the ECM height extends to 180m, or 30 levels but this is not explicitly stated anywhere. On the other hand, for simplicity it could be assumed to be infinite but having no effect on non-groundmap units, but again, this is not made clear as far as i can determine.

So, high is the ECM effect?

An ECM unit on a unit present on a ground map affects units at any elevation level, above or below the unit with ECM, within the listed 6-hex radius on the ground map. It has no effect on aerospace units at any altitude higher than 1 (NOE).

Note: exceptions apply when water is involved; see TW p. 134.

The area of effect of ECM mounted on an aerospace unit only affects ground units (and vice versa) when
- the Aerospace Units on Ground Mapsheet rules are in use (see p. 91),
- the affected unit is within range, and
- the aerospace unit occupies NoE altitude.
However, the unit mounting ECM always receives the benefits of ECM, even if the attack comes from beyond NoE altitude.

Thanks for clarifying this.

So, basically ECM on ground maps is treated as infinite-height cylinder.

I presume this height thing applies to Active Probes as well? (I hope you thought about that :D )
