==Overview:==
Many feared that the increase in the Davion fleet would result in similar
arms build-up by its neighbours, but most expected the Draconis Combine or the
Raven Alliance to be the first to deploy a new design. Indeed, when the
relatively small and impoverished Capellan Confederation announced that they
were bring a new Battlecruiser into service, few were willing to believe them,
expecting at most that they had somehow salvaged some Star League relics.
These attitudes soon changed with the arrive of three Mandarin class
Battlecruisers in orbit of Sian in time for the celebrations of Channeller
Sun-Tzu Liao's 74th birthday in 3105.
==Capabilities:==
Given the limited resources that the Confederation has access to, it's
not unsurprising that the Mandarin class is somewhat basic, lacking many of
the more advanced systems that its counterparts from other nations would
carry. The main armament is made up of a staggering 72 Tronel-55 Series Naval
Laser Cannons in the broadsides, relying on quantity over quality; there are
so many weapons, at least some of them are likely to hit and do damage.
Providing a head-on punch are two sets of twin-mounted Fusigon-2a Medium Naval
Particle Projection Cannons in the bow, allowing for a heavier attack when
advancing on an enemy.
However, many speculate that the ship's true armament may be within the
magazines for its eight White Shark Missile Launchers.
While it is unconfirmed, there has been increased chatter in intelligence
circles and between information brokers that the Confederation has been
re-evaluating and updating its strategic stockpile of nuclear weapons,
including refurbishing a number of Santa Ana 50-kiloton nuclear warheads.
While it is not unheard of for a Successor State to keep such weapons up to
date as a deterrence against possible attack with WMD's, the Santa Ana was
purposefully designed to be fitted to the White Shark capital missile. Further
chatter indicate that the three Mandarins received shipments of "enhanced
munitions" before entering service. Given that the only other weapon they
carry that uses physical ammunition are its LFN Lindblad Shotgun anti-missile
emplacements, it is hard to believe that they are anything but nuclear tipped
missiles for use against larger Davion warships.
If the Mandarin has one chink in its armour, it's the lack of any capital
grade weapons covering the rear of the vessel; in order to give the ship the
desired acceleration curve, the engineers were forced to fit it with multiple
smaller sub-light drives, which in turn take up the bulk of the available
space. While many of the rear flank weapons are able to cover most of this
area, they can not transverse enough to cover it all, leaving a narrow opening
in the defences that a skilled and desperate commander could exploit.
Weapons aside, the Mandarin is an economical design; it only carries two
DropShip docking collars, one on either side of the main hull, while a single
bay on the ventral hull holds 26 Aerospace fighters and 4 small craft. The
ships crew numbers just under 600, leaving little redundancy, and there are no
passenger cabins. The ship has two counter-rotating 95-meter gravity decks,
unusually located horizontally within the main hull, one above and one below
the KF-drive core. This unusual configuration was chosen because it made for a
smaller outline head-on, but has apparently proven to be overly complex, and
there are reports that they are seldom set to more than .8-G.

==Deployment==
So far the Capellan Admiralty has only deployed the Mandarins to
relatively safe and high profile systems near but not on their boarder with
the Federated Suns. This has lent credence to the theory that they are a
direct response to continued Davion naval expansion. Sian has been typically
tight lipped about plans for future expansion of their fleet, and many wait to
see how New Avalon and Terra will respond.
There is, however, two mysteries that remain tantalisingly unknown.
First and perhaps most obvious is the question of just where they were
constructed? No one outside the Confederation had any apparent idea that they
were developing their warship program beyond maintenance and occasional
upgrade for the small fleet they left after the Jihad. Certainly no known
shipyard with the capacity to build a vessel of the Mandarin's size is known
to exist within the Confederation, and they have no allies that would be
willing or able to undertake such a project without word getting out.
Second, there is the question of just how many ships in this class have
actually been built. The CCS Qin Shi Huang and the CCS Wu Zetian have been
seen to carry the hull-numbers BC-101 and BC-102 respectively, but the CCS Sun
Wukong carries the number BC-104, indicating that there is at least one vessel
unaccounted for. The CCAF has issued a press release on the subject after
questions were asked both within and outside their boarders, stating that the
BC-103 was badly damaged in an accident as it neared completion, and it was
deemed to be cheaper and more efficient to scrap it for parts and start again
from scratch than repair it.
While this statement has been accepted by Capellan State media outlets,
but there are those who question if the BC-103, and possibly others, are out
there, not necessarily under the control of Sian.
