Imperial-class Battleship (AU with thanks)
« on: 14 March 2017, 04:34:34 »
The basic ship I think I found on here somewhere but she's changed a lot over time

Imperial-class Battleship

Mass:              1,750,000 tons
Hull:              Illium-14
K-F Drive System:  KF Mark CCXXVII
Length:            1,243 meters
Sail Diameter:     1,375 meters
Power Plant:       Series 8 "Behemoth"
Safe Thrust:       2g
Maximum Thrust:    3g
Armor Type:        Nobel Compound LFC Lamellor Ferro-carbide
Armament:
10 Irian Coporated Heavy Naval Gauss Rifle
   33 Oriente-3 series 20 Naval autocannon
40 Thunderbolt Class 55 Naval Laser
   48 Magna Starfire Heavy PPC
32 Imperator II Light Gauss Rifle
   32 McArthur Laser AMS

Overview
The Free Worlds League's first Battleship was designed in the Ionus
system at the Illium Shipyards and launched in 3108.  The ship is designed
to face down against the WarShips of the Lyran Commonwealth, Wolf Empire and
Capellan Confederation.

Capabilities
The Imperial-class Battleship is able to match the Lyran Mjolnir
class for speed and is able to fight naval sized opponents with a mix of
Naval Gauss Rifles, Naval autocannons and Naval Lasers.  The naval autocannon
armament in particular stands out with eleven "trip-turrets" covering every
angle of the hull.  For defence against fighters and DropShips the class is
equipped with a variety of Heavy Particle Cannons and Light Gauss Rifles.
For missile defence the ship is equipped with an extensive grid of Laser
Anti-Missile Systems which never run out of ammunition.

Supporting each Imperial-class is thirty-six aerospace fighters,
twenty small craft, two DropShips and ninety-six Battle Armour troopers. The
ship can carry two hundred-and forty passengers, though these are often
occupied by the pilots and support staff of the aerospace fighter pilots.
Finally each Imperial is equipped with an advanced Mark II Lithium Fusion
Battery and is capable of carrying over eighty-four thousand tons of cargo.

Deployment
The first Imperial-class Battleship was commissioned into the
District of Marik's navy in 3108.  The MS Grand Marik instantly becoming the
largest WarShip in service of a Free World's League navy.  Parliment has
called for vessels of the Free Worlds League to retake the FWLS designator
but the Captain-General has refused to support this until parliament agrees
to the recreation of Federal troops under the command of Parliament and
independent of the District states.

She's an exceptionally punchy design for a 'light' battleship and her firepower is most formidable, nippy too.  The weaknesses are her rather thin AMS defences and light anti-fighter defences, the LGR's are at best an irritation to a heavy fighter and if you're in HPPC range then the fighters are already shooting.

Nice design though, and good fluff!

She's  not a 'light' battleship, she's a 'fast' battleship. There's only two canon warships bigger than her.

It's speed isn't even particularly noteworthy in the setting it's in, 4/6 has, more or less, become the standard.  Again in the setting, it is an above average battleship, with a combination of good armor and above average firepower.

As for the ship itself, it matches up favorably to most other battleships it is likely to face.
Against the Wolves, their pair of McKennas can out shoot it, but need to come into medium range to truly take advantage of that, the armor of the Imperial is also nearly double that of the McKenna.  If they don't end up with an Arbitration nothing they have completely outclasses the current capabilities of the Free Worlds League.
The Capellans don't have any single warship that comes even close to it.
The Lyrans and SLDF, which have either much more aggressive opponents or are very neutral with regards to the successor states, share the Indefatigable design, which is much more of a jack-of-all-trades ship than a purpose-built combat battleship.  The Imperial can take them with limited concern.
The Suns have a neutral/friendly attitude towards the FWL, focusing much of their energy on the CapCon, though the DC appears to be making a fairly significant move at the moment.  They also have the largest variety of battleships, including the Indefatigable-class, the First Prince II-class light battleship, the Columbia-class fast battlecarrier, and the Mercury-class heavy battleship.  Of these, the Mercury will overpower the Imperial, though is likely to take significant damage.  While the Columbia carries enough fighters and is fast enough to harass the Imperial, but once the fighters are taken care of it will need to flee the field.

Overall, a pretty good warship, and can a bit of a game changer in the setting, depending on how it ends up being used.

Tetrarch Class Battlecruiser the Coyotes just launched is a 3/5.  I think the Imperial is a Fast Battleship instead. She that or she more Battlecruiser than the Clanner's one.   Battlecruisers were always (Cruiser armor & speed, Battleship's firepower.) traditionally.

Fixed.  :P

The end result of the construction rules for this game is that the typical roles most traditional warship designations no longer apply.  Excepting only carriers, all other designations are relegated to a mass comparison, with small differences between factions.  Destroyers aren't particularly built to specifically "destroy" smaller ships and allow larger ones to focus on the bigger threats, frigates are merely oversized destroyers and aren't necessarily well set up to patrol shipping lanes, etc.  Now I would love for a newer version of construction rules to allow for them to actually function well in more specialized roles, but that's not currently the case.

I don't mind introducing new weapons and equipment for this AU but I'm not trying that :o :P
