A lot of the Space Battleship Yamato can be found on youtube. Is Yamato 2199 or the newer one up on any anime sites? Hmm.. If its still up on Netflix might have to introduce my 7yo to Robotech or StarBlazers.

One way to dip your toe into Space Battleship Yamato is the 2010 live action movie:

Incoming fire has the right of way.

The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.

Always remember that your weapon was built by the lowest bidder.

Be warned though. That live action tried to cramp so much in one movie and it's noticeable in the 2nd half of the movie. Also, the official English sub/dub is different from the Japanese. I was shocked when I saw an actual line translated EXACTLY from Japanese and it was day and night compared to the official English dialogue.

He means Riding Bean and Gunsmith Cats.
GIRLS und PANZER. High school girls playing simulated armour battles with Second World War AFVs (not just tanks). Available on Crunchyroll.

I still need to find Riding Bean on DVD (only have VHS), and really wish they did more anime with Gunsmith Cats...I have the manga, and the anime just wasn't enough...

No kidding.  I just looked and Amazon has Gunsmith Cats on DVD listed for a three-digit number.

I've had my 90s quota now I think... :D

Additional great anime recommendations from THIS century! ;D

Broken Blade (日本語にブレイクブレイド) - a fantasy mecha anime with a bit of a Battletech vibe
A Certain Magical Index (とある魔術の禁書目録、read as Toaru Majutsu no INDEX) - A supernatural battle anime with a fair amount of romcom thrown in.
Kyousogiga (京騒戯画) - a story of a strange alternate world created by a buddhist monk
Little Busters (リトルバスターズ)
Nichijou (日常) - an absurdist gag anime of the highest caliber
Re: Zero (Re:ゼロから始まる異世界生活) - a fantasy mystery anime

Both Last Exile & Fate/Stay Night were recommended above, & I second those as well.

Okay, I take it back...dubbing can be hysterical if you through the script out the window and just wing ala Samurai Pizza Cats(Kyatto Ninden Teyandee).
You know, there's anime that's completely ad-libbed in the original... and once you go down that route there's the next step... live-produced anime...

I've had my 90s quota now I think... :D
Has anyone mentioned Plastic Little or 3x3 Eyes yet?

No kidding.  I just looked and Amazon has Gunsmith Cats on DVD listed for a three-digit number.
Somewhat oddly the first volume of the manga retails in the same three-digit price region, while the subsequent volumes depending on edition are almost in the single-digit region.

If I wanted to be unfair i'd recommend ID-0 here. Fits rather well with GITS.

A Certain Magical Index (とある魔術の禁書目録、read as Toaru Majutsu no INDEX) - A supernatural battle anime with a fair amount of romcom thrown in.
I'm watching that right now, and i have yet to discover any romcom...

Like I said, I already have Gunsmith Cats, both the anime and the manga (at least that which has been released in the US to my knowledge), but Riding Bean...I only have the OVA on VHS for that...

gunsmith Cats the OVA is long OOP, very popular.. and a lot of the sellers on places like amazon are really scalpers who take your money then go to places like ebay and the like to grab a copy on the cheaper side, pocketing the difference. you can get it for under $60 through ebay or using the google shopping search. (also, check the copy being offered. if it has the "essential anime" header on the cover, it is one of the last production runs and should still be on the cheaper side. if it lacks that it is one of the earlier production runs and usually attracts the higher prices.  even though it is literally the same dvd. of course if it is a scalper the image they use won't match up anyway.)

Actually, I also saw Riding Bean on DVD for sale on Amazon for something like $10.

I actually really love 3X3 Eyes. Not sure that I'd put it on any list of recommendations for a person's first few experiences with anime.

My love for Satoshi Urushihara not withstanding, yeah, Plastic Little isn't that good.

(Dubbed movies, like abridged books, are abominations.)

Counterpoint: Ghost Stories. You can watch the Japanese track and catch a show geared towards children. I'll watch the English track and laugh my ass off. Not something I'd recommend for getting started in anime, mind you, but something to consider after you're about a dozen or so series in.

Seconded. Subtitled Ghost Stories is boring as ******. Dubbed Ghost Stories is ****** HILARIOUS.

I am currently rewatching My hero Academia, and log horizon on crunchy

a few others that I liked include sword art online (which is really 4 stories in 2 seasons)
food wars
Gate
girls un panzer (previously mentioned)
New Game
strike witches, and strike witches 2 (lots of fansirvice)
rosario and vampire

I never really got into gundam but that's just my preferences

Busou Shinki
chobits was good also IMO

another I bought several years ago was dual parallel trouble adventure

I will admit I prefer stuff that isn't dotally grim and or grimdark, IE more upbeat even if there is a bad situation going on.

i have a copy of Girls und Panzer on DVD i find the subs much easier to watch than the dub.. the voice acting is grating to me)

A lot of the Space Battleship Yamato can be found on youtube. Is Yamato 2199 or the newer one up on any anime sites? Hmm.. If its still up on Netflix might have to introduce my 7yo to Robotech or StarBlazers.

SBY 2199 isn't up for legal streaming, I believe. And the one site I use doesn't have the first part of 2202 yet.

Hmmmm, the anime I have seen is all early to mid 90s stuff, but I enjoyed them all.

Bubble Gum Crisis. - Really liked this short series. Was hoping more were to come... really surprised the motorcycles they drove have not been made in real life yet. Thought they were awesome.

Dominion Tank Police - Police with tanks, different.

Ninja Scroll - You know, awesome ninja stuff...

Dirty Pair - Police? detectives or some such that always managed to screw things up real bad. Innuendo all over the place...

Driver? (unsure of the name) - Hmm, All I remember was the guy drove an awesome car all over Chicago, IL even lower Wacker, which is easily identified in the show. As far as I know, it's the only anime that takes place in Chicago, IL. Someone can correct the title if they know the show I'm talking about.

Appleseed - Mecha stuff. I vaguely remember it, but I liked it.

Fist of the North - meh, it was just okay, despite the hype about it at the time.

I completely forget the name, but it takes place in WWII where there are BIG internal combustion engine (think bomber engines, which can be clearly seen) mechs used on the Axis and Allied sides. I do remember the one of the bad guys/girls having a Broomhandle pistol though. The mechs were moved around on flatbed train cars before deployment. I'm sure someone will identify the title that I am forgetting.

On the one you call "Driver", not sure of what the name of the anime you refer to is (but may have seen it myself), but Gunsmith Cats is also set in Chicago...

I've seen most of the rest of your list (had to correct one name (in bold) from your list though), except the last...I believe I once saw the one you refer to in the last one in a store, but never got it...these are all good...

Oh, and the Dirty Pair were Trouble-shooters for the 3WA, and they were mostly successful at completing their missions...there just happened to be a lot of death and/or destruction in their wake...most of which was not actually their (direct) fault...it was an ongoing theme in their stories...

The Dirty Pair at the space station was hilarious and was my favorite. Thanks for the clarification of the characters as Trouble-shooters for the 3WA.

It has been 25+ years since I saw all of the anime I had mentioned.

You can find bits and bobs of it on youtube but finding the sub is a pain in the ass.

But to give an indication of what I meant about the OST, here's a battle done to the Bolero, not a bit of it, all of it, the entire piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mvKNS9OUZI&ytbChannel=charklau

all of the music in it is all classical

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDOiQDvjuuc&ytbChannel=Kyrie%20Sei%C3%9Fer

And its a very good series, its...Game of Thrones in space with less no swearing or incest/sex.  But lots of political shenanigans as well as HUGE scale battles (see the Bolero for example)
