Melee combat question
« on: 29 July 2017, 21:35:52 »
Is the only modifiers used the ones for the type of attack? Or does movement and cover apply?

All usual modifiers apply, cover, movement, the like.

Yes, think of it this way: "To-hit (or attack) modifiers apply to all things you are attacking, and you are attacking something by using a physical attack. Therefore, to-hit modifiers apply to physical (or melee) attacks. The same goes for target modifiers."

Except for heat. Heat effects do not change physical combat.

So you are looking at:

Piloting
+Actuator damage (Whether leg or arm)
+Range (Always 0, so no change there)
+Attacker movement (0, 1, 2, 3)
+Target movement
+Terrain (eg: Woods, water)
+Weapon modifiers (eg: -2 for a sword, -2 for a kick)

In real world this would look like:
Pilot 5
No actuator damage 0
Range 0
Movement 2 (Ran)
Target 2 (moved for 5 hexes)
Terrain 1 (Target in light woods)
Weapon modifier -2 (Kick)

So 5+2+2+1-2 = 8.
No-Dachi has a counter-argument. Nothing further? Ok.

You can skip range, too.  ;)

One thing that flummoxed me, and I've seen here in the forums a time or two is that the base To Hit Number is the Piloting Skill, but it is not a PSR.  So a Small or Torso Cockpit does not affect melee rolls.

So the +3 from a critted gyro won't matter when you try to kick someone, but it will matter on the PSR if you miss that kick.

Huh, you're right.
BMM page 94: "Physical attacks are not Piloting Skill Rolls: modifiers that only affect Piloting Skill Rolls do not affect physical attacks, and vice versa."
