Mechs Throwing things
« on: 30 September 2017, 23:41:14 »
Are there rules for a mech with hands throwing a boulder or something at another mech?
I know there are ones for using a bit of scrap as an improvised club.
This has to have come up at some point.

EDIT: So nobody knows? I'll take answers from anyone.

Should I move this question to another section of the forum?

That's it! Challenge the Clans to rock-paper-scissors in 3050! A good portion of the 'Mechs didn't have hands so the Inner Sphere would win!
If I had a nickel for every time I've legged a Warhammer, I could put them in a sock, spin it around and leg another Warhammer.

Those rules lead to one awesome moment in Jihad Turning Points: New Avalon, where one of the AFFS officers piloting a prototype AS8-D Atlas picked up a WoB Thorn and threw it into another mech, sending both of them off a mountain.

IIRC the TO rules don't allow for things like tipping a tank over onto its top and leaving it helpless, as was done in fiction at least once.  Sad state of things, but I suppose for game balance purposes you can't be allowed to disable a tank just by walking up next to it.

Not sure about throwing, but there were several "unofficial" sets of rules for kicking a field goal, using an Elemental as the football.

TacOps page 94-99.

P.94 - Throwing inanimate objects
Can lift 5% of weight with one hand, so an Atlas could pick up a 5t boulder.

It also covers P.95 picking up an enemy vehicle.
and 9.97 throwing battle armour.

Battletech - Yup - There's a rule for that.
No-Dachi has a counter-argument. Nothing further? Ok.

I thought those were actually built into a 'Mech?
Or are those rules for when an arm gets blown off?

It's been a long time since I read that section, but IIRC it's to allow a mech to throw a mounted melee weapon, as well as picking up a damaged or discarded one, or a tree trunk or an Elemental, or a small enough mech if you have two functioning arms and TSM...

It's like the jettison-capable weapon quirk, but it predates the quirk rules.

Thanks guys. It always seemed weird to me that things like hatchets took up crits even though they're technically being gripped by the hand. I suppose the explanation would be that the critspace is meant for some kind of mounting latches to secure the weapon in the hand so they can use a melee weapon that goes over the 5% limit.
Now I have visions of a 50 tonner dual-wielding handheld SRM2s like pistols.

There are rules for that - you can either go for externally mounted weapons (though a mech can only use one at a time), or the jettison-capable weapon quirk, which is there to simulate moments from fiction like a Battlemaster dropping its PPC to use both hands.

For some reason I have images of 2 teams of mechs playing a mech sized game of baseball.....

So... basicly the Battletech version of the Warhammer Universe/Franchises' Blood Bowl?

That... sounds...
AWESOME!

Now THAT is interesting!

Reminds me of a scene from one of the Camachos Caballeros novels where a Yakuza/ Black Dragon(?) mechwarrior is fatally surprised by a Caballero Hatchetman hurling it's hatchet at his cockpit as it dies. :o >:D #P

Always wanted that action as a possible rule after that...

Normal squishies won't stay in one piece through even a single play, so you need to use Elementals as the ball.  They're a bit more durable, and as a plus, you can't hear the screaming through the fully enclosed helmet.

A Berserker would make for a great linebacker!

The later Pheonix hawk with improved jump jets (6/9/9) might work.

But maybe consider a Wraith. It moves fast enough.

I remember reading about an  in canon annual Mech fair where the are prizes for Mech dancing, fancy dress Mechs and a Mech scale American Football game.
