Gaming Table - Something New
« on: 20 November 2015, 14:13:46 »
So, I have a Man Cave, and already have a gaming table for my home games, but for games where I am not at home, I still "LOVE" the look of 3D terrain, and I wanted something that fit the bill of cool 3D terrain, but easy to transport.

Surfing the web, I cam across this website:

http://6mm.wargaming.info/page3.shtml

Where the author talks about the interlocking 'anti-fatigue' mats like these:

So I thought, yeah I can do that! So A quick trip to W-Mart and $30 later I had two packs, enough for a 4x8 table, or more often a 4x6 or two 4x4 tables.

Here is my work in progress. Still need to flock and finish the water with water effects.

River's 'base painted' still needs more effects before painting the WATER EFFECTS down.

Great minds think alike. I started on something similar with interlocking alphabet squares a few years ago but lost interest. Yours has turned out well.

Yeah that 6mm wargaming site is awesome.  Been checking that place for years.

Yours is coming out to a good start. Look forward to updates.

So, some updates to the table. Painted some 'depth' to the water ways, to give it a little more look, and then added some rocky shores to help delineate the river/lake shores.

in these shots I am flocking the boards with static grass. In the last shot are two boards I had initially surfaced with fine Turf

I found this extremely difficult to work with, I first had to lay it down, then aftre dry, knock as much turf off, and then spray the hell out of it with watered down glue to ensure it did not scrap off...As a result, I have two board with a darker color. May have to try and blend later with static grass.  :-\

You should make the darker one like a forested area. Add trees, bushes and clumps of grass to give the illusion that the area has more water. Then blend the edges of that board into the lighter one.

I could...but for forest and what not, I was making stand along sections that can be tossed down as needed. All-in-all I am really impressed with how this is working out.

I like this idea. Does the flexibility of the mats cause an issue with the flocking coming up, or the paint flaking?

A little late for this project, but have you thought about doubling/tripling up on the layers, and cutting into/adding on top to get more varied terrain?

I don't roll or fold them, got a box of the right size from U-Haul for storage, so seems ok so far.

As to doubling/trippling up...would be more cost, but possibly something for later when some finances even out.

I'm thinking of doing something like this too, since I have some packs of EVA hanging around from cosplay projects. Will probably make transportation a tad easier
