Well I haven't posted here since April, so I doubt y'all will miss me, but I wanted to drop by and let y'all know: I got back in the National Guard in March, and will be leaving in about three weeks for Basic training(10 weeks), immediately followed by AIT(16 weeks).  So if you don't hear from me for a while, don't worry too much.

I hadn't posted because I was selfishly hoping I could be at the top of two consecutive pages on this thread.

Regardless, best of luck my friend!

What role in the National Guard?

I'm off in a week or two to play true "weekend warrior" as the regional NHS is being invited to attend a military experience weekend
I assume that this is a covert recruitment attempt by the military but as I have now effectively been rejected by the British Army 3 times I am learning my lesson but it should still be fun and may involve things like getting to fly in a helicopter of some sort and see their other "toys"

My official title will be "UH-60 Helicopter Repairer", but the job duties will include not just repair and maintenance, but loading, serving as aircrew, door gunner, etc.  Basically anything you can do with a Blackhawk except fly it.  (Though hopefully I'll eventually be able to go to OCS and then flight school later).

Cool!

I think the British Army's Army Air Corps treats the non-pilots in a similar manner

Go have fun.  One of my wife's co-workers took a hop on an USAF KC-135 and while they didn't get to do any refueling she had a great time.  Back in '15, I sign my wife up to a Jayne Wayne Day on Quantico; she had fun too.

I saw this story on Quora and thought that my fellow BattleTechers might well appreciate it

It is well worth reading as it feels a lot like a mercenary unit might look

https://www.quora.com/What-was-the-coolest-military-unit-of-all-time?srid=wkw

link is partly broken - I copy and paste the answer I meant

American 83rd Infantry Division in World War II.
During the advance toward the River Elbe about 50 miles west of Berlin in 1945, the resourceful commander of the Division, Maj. Gen. Robert C. Macon gave the order to commandeer any German vehicle that moved, usually at gunpoint, no questions asked. As a result, the 83rd Infantry Division had an unbelievable collection of vehicles of different kinds, including everything from German military staff car, half-track, Stug III self-propelled gun, Panther tank, Tiger tank, King Tiger tank, … to civilian motor bikes, buses and ‘two cherished fire engines’. Every newly acquired vehicle got a quick coat of olive-green paint and a U.S. star slapped on its side; then it joined the 83rd.
A German King Tiger in service with the American 83rd Infantry Division (notice the presence of the stars in stead of swastikas)
This Stug III had stars too.
From the air, its columns showed no resemblance to either an armored or an infantry division and war correspondents began to nickname this division “The Rag-Tag Circus”. But who cared? The division’s wildly assorted collection of vehicles helped it to advance as fast as its competitor - the 2nd Armored “Hell on Wheels” Division. When leading elements the two divisions reached the River Weser at the same time on April 5, 1945, both divisions wanted to be the first to cross. Eventually, a compromise was reached: the divisions crossed together, by sandwiching their units.
At one point, the 83rd managed to capture an intact Me-109 fighter plane and even more impressively, found someone to fly it. When one seasoned soldier of another division saw obviously a German aircraft approaching his column, he yelled to his buddies “Me-109” then quickly ducked for cover. But to his surprise, the aircraft didn’t open fire, the soldier raised his head and saw that the plane was painted a blotchy olive-green and had the words “83rd Inf. Div.” under its wings. It was a prank of the 83rd to instill fear and confusion in its neighboring units.
The Germans were even more confused and surprises by the 83rd’s vehicles. Cornelius Ryan’s book “The Last Battle” told the following interesting story: One day as the 83rd was rolling along, a German Mercedes staff car was weaving in and out of the column, passing other vehicles. No one in the division really paid attention to it because, well, they had commandeered plenty of German staff cars the days before. But this driver kept honking his horn insistently, demanding other vehicles to make way for his so one American soldier took a second look and saw that the car was carrying a full load of German officers, including one general who was obviously in a hurry. The Germans had mistaken the 83rd’s column as a retreating German column! The Mercedes staff car was promptly stopped and the bewildered German officers were taken prisoners. Then the Mercedes, in top condition, received the usual hurried paint job and joined the 83rd.

That's incredible.

In more boring military news, I'm coming home from Basic with a medical discharge.  Preexisting condition that I told them about, they let me in with, but then became an issue in training.

So let's go with a cosmic convergence...
On the same day the Harebrained Schemes announces the launch window for the Battletech computer game Palladium Books announces that they have lost the license for Robotech and will not produce the remaining Wave 2 rewards.

Come on folks, crappola like this doesn't happen everyday.

Also, I hope you all are well.

Reminds me of my wife's time growing up in Michigan. When she was in high school, the school's policy on snow was that if the district superintendent could make it to his office, no employees or students had any excuse.

He lived across the street from his office.

Sounds very middle European, bribe your way to victory or something.

This'll be a turn the lights on and blow the dust out post,  the Battletech
PC game btw is first class.  I am very happy with it, even allowing for a
distinct slowness in the UI.

A PC game of a relevant genre has occupied all of my time recently.
