The Hobgoblin, a Dirtbag Militia Design
« on: 20 January 2016, 21:38:10 »
Cannonshop's Dirtbag Militia threads got me thinking about combining Goblins and Hetzers in the same lances, and it occurred to me it was a shame the Hetzer wasn't tracked.  Then it hit me: the Goblin chassis can carry an AC/20!  It has to drop the turret (and associated armor), and carve a hole in the glacis (rounding out the armor loss from the turret), but it fits perfectly with the Goblin standard infantry compartment and forward mounted machine gun.  Granted, it's only got 10 shots for the AC/20, but I figured dropping the infantry or MG would make it less DirtbagTM.

Thanks!  It's odd that we don't have a tracked box o' doom at the low end, being that we have wheeled and hover versions.

Thanks!  It's odd that we don't have a tracked box o' doom at the low end, being that we have wheeled and hover versions.

We do now.  See the original Predator Tank Destroyer under its variants in TRO 3150 and TRO 3145 CapCon.  Also 45 tons, but faster (5/8) and less armor (I think).  Originated in BattleTechnology mag and it was a beautiful thing back in the day.  I use Hetzers, Predators, and Saladins to ensure that my dirtbags have AC/20 anti-mech power in any terrain at any speed.  (Also use the Goblin and its variants for tracked IFV, main tank, and fire support roles.)

I'm guessing it doesn't have an ICE at that speed, unless it really has Saladin level armor on a tracked vehicle.

No, it's ICE, but armor is heavily focused forward.  30 front, 6 each side, 6 rear, no turret.

Hmmm... punching that into SAW, I'm only getting one ton of ammo.  Does it use heavy Ferro or something?

Playing around a bit in SAW, I managed to cram a Thumper into the Goblin chassis.  I think two of these plus an LRM Goblin and an MG version carrying extra ammo could be fashioned into a heck of a battery at the company level.

The Battery would look like:
Command Lance:
MG Goblin - 3 tons of Communications Equipment (equals 4 total) + Battery Staff (1 Squad) + 1 Squad
LRM Goblin - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad

Line Lances (2)
MG Goblin - 3 tons of Thumper ammunition + 1 ton of exoskeletons (4) + 1 Squad
LRM Goblin - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad

So each battery would have six tubes and eight exoskeletons to shift the extra six tons of ammo not organic to the Bugbears, the equivalent of 4 tons of communications equipment to leverage a satellite downlink, and six LRM-10s, 3 SRM-6s, two dozen machine guns and three full platoons of infantry for self defense.  All in a 540 ton package that fits in 12 light vehicle cubicles.

That is correct.  Only 5 shots.  Charges fast, fires hard, and then dies or retreats.

No advanced tech like ferro.  It's a Succession Wars design.

Looking at the rearming rules in Strat Ops (p. 186), I think it would be better to swap out the full ton of exoskeletons for only three, plus four techs.  That provides a full tech team even without drawing on the infantry, and cuts the number of exoskeletons to match the number of tubes.  This makes the battery:

Command Lance:
MG Goblin - 3 tons of Communications Equipment (equals 4 total) + Battery Staff (1 Squad) + 1 Squad
LRM Goblin - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad

Line Lances (2)
MG Goblin - 3 tons of Thumper ammunition + 1 Tech Team (3 exoskeletons + 4 techs) + 1 Squad
LRM Goblin - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad
Bugbear - 1 Squad

The exoskeletons would just be bare chassis (80 kg) with four cargo lifters (120 kg for all four), giving a 1-ton lift capacity and weighing 200kg each

Also, looking at the quirks section, I think the Bugbear is an excellent candidate for the Fast Reload quirk.  To balance it out, the Exposed Weapon Linkage makes sense given that a much larger hole in the glacis has to be carved to accommodate elevating the Thumper.  Since that's a -2 against Fast Reload's +1, I think Trailer Hitch (for another +1) is most appropriate.

I was looking at the dimensions of the MegaMek art for the Goblin, and it looks like it's just (barely) possible to cram 50 infantry into a MG variant (which should be possible as it has a 5 ton infantry compartment).  The tank crew has to reside in the turret (gunner and commander, along with ALL the ammo), or nearly prone above the infantry compartment (driver).  The engine (rotary?) and drive train (electric?) have to be very flat underneath the infantry compartment (not to mention the fuel tank...).  It's really enough to make 7 trooper squads worthwhile when you consider the sardine can a truly full one would be.

Curiously, the MegaMek art for the MG variant has two SRM-6s vice one.  I also recall stating I was going to move four of the machine guns into the turret in my non-canon unit thread, so here's a blend of the two:

The Goblin really does lens itself well for dirt bag militia, doesn't it?

Absolutely, and in all kinds of ways.  It's relatively cheap, it only needs three crew (so it's cheap to operate), and it doesn't sacrifice anything to carry infantry.  The only thing wrong with the original design was the large laser, which all the variants fixed.  If you haven't looked before, I encourage you to take a gander at the Glenmora Planetary Militia I put together over in Non-Canon Units...

Actually, from the not needing ammo standpoint, I always dug the large laser on the original.

I'm just prejudiced against energy weapons on ICE vehicles.  If you're going to go to the trouble of mounting all those heat sinks, you might as well go whole hog and spring for the fusion power plant.

Except for the cost, a Large Laser installed on an ICE chassis is cheaper than a comparable AC/10 install, and will save anywhere from 1/2 to a ton of parasitic mass (depending on the turret configuration).  I personally would like to see a Re Engineered Large Laser on a Goblin chassis, that is a fearsome combo.

And if you go fusion on a Goblin, get it faster with a 225 rated engine, that is just me.
Saying that because the equipment isn't up-to-the-minute, bleeding-edge tech therefore not a threat is like saying an M2 Browning isn't dangerous to modern infantry because it is 100 years old.

Honestly, I'm confused why there wasn't an official variant that did this in the Succession Wars.
The fifteen tube gives decent long range firepower with two tonnes of ammo, and the six tube gives some self-defense ability.

Dropping the fifteen tube to a ten tube lets you carry a platoon of infantry with two tonnes of LRM ammo. Which could be a refit if you've got a busted SRM-6 Goblin and pair of LRM Goblins that need to be protected, just stick with one tonne bay and add armor/ammo to make up the difference.

After over four years, I finally figured out how to cram a Long Tom Artillery Cannon into a Goblin chassis: a Fuel Cell engine!

Don't mind the infantry compartment only being listed as half a ton... with Fractional Accounting, the Control tonnage goes down by 0.25, and you can halve the MG ammo without worry (to a mere 50 shots) to get that half ton back...  ^-^

I call this one the "Ogre", and it's still under 2M C-Bills...
