Overview:The Zapadka Modular Light Utility Vehicle is one of the more practically important combat support vehicles in the SLDF. It isn't nearly as common as the much larger Destrier, but if your trade isn't in Combat Support, the Zapadka is the truck you see most often and at closest range every day. It's the vehicle your squad leader or platoon 2IC likely tell you to draw from the motor pool and for tens of thousands of SLDF soldiers every year, it's their first car.
Description:The Zapadka is laid out conventionally; engine compartment front, crew compartment behind that, with turret (w. searchlight) above and the Omnipod to the rear. It is a two-axel all-wheel drive vehicle, with dual bogies on the rear axel. ground clearance is 0.53 meters.
Development:When the New Model Army program began, it started with a massive dump of equipment donated to the SLDF, but unwanted. Much of this was fit for targetry or training only; what remained was a hodgepodge mixture of equipment from all over known space. Nowhere did this create a more gregious issue than in the Combat Service Support Corps of the nascent New Model Army.
One of the first industrial programs began was Project: Hannibal, which was aimed at supplying the New Model Army with a family of vehicles to meet all it's CSS needs with as few vehicles as possible.
Originally three basic platforms were envisioned; all omnivehicles and all built to non-combat standards. All were to be fusion-engined in line with then-Commander McKenn's directive to eliminate hydrocarbon fuel from the supply system.
Simply named Types 1, 2 and 3, the project was considered a failure; only the Type 1 partly met the requirements laid out and this became the Zapadka. The Type 2, eventually saw the light of day by way of the modified and demilitarized Clydesdale heavy truck, which was later developed into the Destrier, today the backbone of SLDF CSS forces. the Type 3; which was the super-heavy truck, was a complete failure and this role has only recently been filled by the new Moose Prime Movers, which are only now becoming available, very nearly 40 years after the first requirement was laid down.
Deployment:While ubiquitous, the Zapadka is held in only small numbers at most levels of the SLDF, but only found in large numbers on fixed installations and there are several configurations never seen off the hard pack. Most SLDF soldiers not actually familiar with the 'Zap as a part of their trade are not aware it is a modular vehicle. The Zapadka is hardly every reconfigured through it's entire career and most will be cannibalized for parts to keep others running without every having utilized their modular facilities. Those that do are lovingly stamped by the techs with the number of times and into which format they have been reconfigured.
The Zapadka is delivered from the factory unconfigured and only configured at depot level before delivery from a delivery unit to the unit it will be used with. A Zapadka might be reconfigured if returned for depot-level maintainance; you don't necessarily or even often get back the same serial number vehicle you put up for repair; the repair unit, the depot and the delivery unit fill vacancies by the priority-level of the units they serve.
A non-omni version of the Zapadka is exported by the 3rd League.
Capabilities:The Zapadka is a rugged and reliable vehicle, which handles well off-road. It is a flexible vehicle in theory, but in practice it performs more in line with a vehicle half it's weight. It's operators like it, however as it is easy to handle on and off-road.
Limitations:The Zapadka is extremely useful in that it can be reconfigured, but expensive for whatever role it is filling. While Capable for what it provides, what it provides isn't as much as many comparable designs. With only 3.675 tons of podspace for an 11 ton vehicle, the 'Zap has many critics in the exchequer. In the cargo role, 3.675 tons makes for a hell of a step up to the Destrier's approximately 20 tons.
Notes:Again, I'm adding turrets as omnicomponents and the Zap even swaps out the turret at one point. So it's not wholly legal in that way.
I named the Zapadka after a friend I work with. She was having a bad day and I was like; "Here, look, I made you a truck and named it after you." That perked her up.
