Miniature of the Fortnight #8: Warhawk/Masakari
« on: 01 January 2017, 23:56:34 »
Happy New Year!  To ring in 2017, we'll start with a 'Mech that helped bring in a new era in BattleTech.  The Warhawk (Masakari) was one of the original 16 Clan 'Mechs in TRO 3050.  If you want to know more about the 'Mech and its various configurations, check out its 'Mech of the Week article.

There have been three sculpts of the Warhawk (Masakari) released by Ral Partha and/or IWM:
  • The original sculpt (20-605).
  • The resculpt currently available from IWM (20-605RE).
  • A BattleForce-scale sculpt (20-9124).
If you have any Warhawks (or Masakaris if you prefer) painted, or will be painting, please post them!  I expect to finish the one I'm painting by next week.

Our next fortnight's 'Mech will be the Wolfhound.

Two different Warhawks. First the old sculpt (Wolf in Exile Alpha).
In order to distance the arms; otherwise sitting on the upper legs; i inserted some plastic discs. They are mostly invisible on the final miniature.

Second one is resculpted model for my Ghost Bear Alpha Galaxy.
I also finished a second resculpt model in Blood Spirit Tau Galaxy colors, but that one was a commission job, so i don't want to post it here as it is not my own mini.

Also from my side an old sculpt and a resculpt. Some more resculpts with alternate configs are planned, but not yet realized.

Great stuff!

Dirty Harry, great minds & all that. The old-sculpt Warhawks benefit greatly from a little spacing out, and then go well with the resculpts!

Will post mine later.

Ok, this isn't painted (yet), but I'm too proud of it not to share.

Taking the Resculpt model, I modified it to an -F variant.  I don't like how skinny the model is though, so I bulked up the torso a la the MWO model and mounted the weapons as per the in-game mounts (as best I could).  I also splayed the arms by adding a bit of plastic joints from a cannabalized clix model.  I'm super, super happy with how it all turned out.

Don't forget that there was an alternate version of the original sculpt sold in the MW3 boxed sets.  IT has some additional raised details, such as those on the shins.  I don't have a good picture, but here's one from like 15 years ago.

Nips, that looks excellent. I'm suprised you think the new sculpt skinny, but I've never had one - only old sculpts.

And B1BFlyer, that "Brutal Punch" always makes me happy :)

I like the Battleforce Masakari/Warhawk. Lots of detail on something so small.
I wish more of them would come out.

Does anyone really think that the Warhawk lives up to it's reputation as an "Apartment Building with Legs"?

I've always liked it's look and I think this is an unfair assessment from an in-universe perspective.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

Can someone explain me all these "Miniature of the Fortnight" threads? I mean I know what fortknight means. But what does it mean related to minis? And whats the reason of these threads? is it so that we collect all the pictures of a mini in one thread? So many questions.

I do not understand why you ask this question, it almost seems like you're annoyed.
we are on a Battletech forum and they are collecting pics of mech, we are not talking about botany. Or am I wrong?

Correct. You are wrong. I wonder how people are always able to detect annoyance within digital forms of communication without any analog indications.  ::)

My opinion is that social networks have engulfed all the attention, with the result that this forum is less and less frequented.
So these initiatives could serve to reignite the interest to participate.
