So am I, but I think the Deimos works pretty well as our assault, a good heavy on the other hand could complement it quite well, maybe something akin to the Nova Cat or Flamberge.  But then I'd want a medium and light omni as well...  and then people start saying I'm wishing too much.  :D

Sorry Omni. To replace old Kingfishers, Warhawks, Daishis, etc. I'm just greedy.

I feel like I'm missing something - the Deimos is an Omni assault...

So am I, but I think the Deimos works pretty well as our assault

Plus the Omen is dead sexy.

I feel like it's more of a big long range 'mech than a bruiser. And maybe thats just the Prime and my bias.

Definitely agreed on new omni's though. Won't happen. Id love an upgrade of the Bashkir and Sabutai, and i think thats realistic.

I would have liked an 4/6 assault Omni with FerroLam (Warhawk MkII). Yes, I know I am a bit greedy.

Depends on the exact timeframe, some of these are earlier, some later. Clan Maxim, standard APCs from TRO3039 (thanks to the OA), heavy hover and heavy wheeled APC (3060), Anhur, Karnov, Indra, and I suppose you could retrofit the Bishop VTOL in 3145. Maybe a scattering of Svantovit.

But I'm no infantry expert, so anyone else, feel free to chime in.

A teaser for when you get home then:

There is the junk that comes with the OA militia (heavy APCs and such)
The Clan Maxim is actually not on the list (not sure why... MUL team just decided there wasn't enough of them in the RA to qualify as "available" post Jihad, I guess)
OTOH the R-10 is on the list, beginning in the late republic period.  12 tons of internal transport capability, plus it's an an omni vehicle so another point of elementals outside!

The Raven's 'S Teams' what are they? Are they just Mech's outfitted for space work or is it some kind of elite group thing?

We don't have that much information. Like the R-teams, they seem to be a Star in size, combining battle suits and mechs. All optimized for space operations.

It would require specialized training, so my take would be that they're an elite unit, only rolled out when there's a need for them.

I also get the impression that they are part of the Raven touman in the same way the Raven Watch and garrison forces are, they are technically part of the touman, but don't show up on TO&Es for the touman proper.  But that's just an impression, and may very well be wrong.

I wish that MWO would sell packs for specific Clans, an CSR Cluster Pack would be great.

Ahh so more like a special forces detachment kind of thing, not just Mechwarriors who are trained for space combat but who are dedicated towards that goal and role.

So, trothkin. Space 'Mechs... useful niche unit, or boondoggle?

Discuss.

I consider Space 'Mechs to fill a very very small niche, one so small that spending resources on filling it verges on a boondoggle.

The role I feel they fill better than other units is salvage operations.  Where a more powerful unit is needed to maneuver scraps too large for battle armor to easily move and in spaces too small for small craft to operate.  (and even then, it's possible to create small and powerful small craft that could function similarly)

They don't fit a suitable defensive or offensive role, Aerospace fighters fit that role dramatically better.  Their use in the defense and assault of space stations can be used to target or defend weapons ports without counter fire, but their larger silhouettes compared to battle armor make them easier targets by ASF to shoot off the hull.  And they can only function inside in areas that were specifically built to handle 'mech sized units or larger, and again, battle armor will have an edge when it comes to taking or defending areas of space stations.  If they are actually spaceborne, then they are sitting ducks for ASF which can dictate both range and terms.

Overall, I kind of wish they were never made, their role is too niche and the resources being spent on turning battlemechs into spacemechs would have been better used to make equivalent industrialmechs or purpose-built small craft.

Since we only have a sense of scale for all but the largest space stations and orbital facilities, Camalot Command, Gabriel, Lum, Boeing Megaplex.

They may not be so much of a niche unit. You aren't going to fly ASF's into Cammalot Command or Gabriel. Your going to send Battle Armor and Space Troops, I suspect the spaces are big enough for mechs but not big enough to fly down, except for the Yard slips proper.

Might make sense to have some mechs to support your BA and Space Troopers. I think Orbital Facilities are more common than fluff says. Maybe not many CMO26 sized facilities, but easily 1,2 and even 3 km Facilities. Spreading over dozens of levels, for many, many Square miles of Facility to secure, with mech sized spaces and 0g.

Soo niche, they should have been Omnimech loadouts.

Niche.  Aerospace fighters can do the same job more effectively.
