I enjoyed Bright... didn't think it was a great movie, but I enjoyed it.

Took the family to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle a few days ago. We all really enjoyed it. Plenty of clean humor, a little low-brow, and just enough of the feels.

Somehow there were two different movie threads so I went ahead and merged them (thanks for the heads up MoneyLovinOgre4Hire).

I don't think he did anything besides "Comedy" since Airplane. But that was the big difference in the Airplane movies...they took serious actors like Peter Graves and Robert Stack and had them at comedy roles. Worked for some and didn't for others.

I'm trying to get caught up on my movie watching.  This week I finally watched Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 . I've read some negative feedback on this movie but I really enjoyed it.

I couldn't make it more than 15 minutes in, which is a shame because I quite liked the first one. I just found Vol. 2 to be annoying and difficult to watch.

Well, finally caught bladerunner 2049..  Ok, but long, slow and imo had way too many scenes that were dark (too dim to see)..  2 out of 5.

Bladerunner 2049 - it was good, reminiscent of the original in a good way. I'm glad I steered clear of spoilers as the character appearing near the end was a very pleasant surprise. 9/10.

Thor Ragnarok - was everything I have come to expect from Marvel Phase 2 - jokey, contrived, overlong, and edited less-than-perfectly. But it was exactly the mindlessness that I was looking for at the time, so... 7/10.

I liked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2...the soundtrack could of been better.

When I saw Thor 3 it felt like Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

I went to see Darkest Hour the other day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtJ60u7SUSw

Its honestly very enjoyable, whilst there are some bits that are not historically accurate, you can forgive them because they seem very Churchillian, and what we know of the man, his personality, his mindset, it really wouldn't surprise me if he did bits like it.

Gary Oldman does a very good job as Churchill (to the point that in filming he made himself rather ill with all the real cigars he was smoking for the scenes), and gets the man's mannerisms, and most difficultly, his voice and way of speaking pretty spot on.

It shows Churchill's difficulties with his opponents in the War Cabinet, his initially rather fraught relationship with the King, mentions some of the honestly very bad ideas that Churchill had, so its not trying to even present him as Saint Churchill of England. Its a good solid representation of the man.  I thought that Albert Finney had done an amazing Churchill in the HBO TV movie The Gathering Storm, but Mr Oldman's take on him is superb too.

Yep, I saw it last week and consider it the best portrayal of Churchill I've seen.  Oldman had the role and personality right, this portrayal of him is going to be like Heath Ledger's Joker.  The one to define the image for the age.

On a slightly lighter note he gained 80 pounds for the role, now he's gotta loose it.   #P

It's Oldman, he can emulate just about any role imaginable.

Speaking of people capable of total conversion I have seen the Norwegian movie Fachidioten on the TV, brutal and funny at the same time, with Bruno Ganz (Hitler in Untergang) in side role of leader of Serbian gang  ???. My biggest gripe with movie though is that the hero left the scope on the rifle he cut down into obrez

Shoot first, laugh later.

Did a rewatch of the ford/pitt movie, Devil's own, and then the Morgan freeman Along came a spider..

I've always wanted to see a film with both freeman and Ford in starting either together or as foes..  OR better yet, Ford and Eastwood!

Re-watched True Romance for the first time in like 15 years. It's not aged... well.
Great movie, awesome to see a young Tarintino's writing, good acting - but some of the script made me cringe thinking "we would never allow that today".
Anyway, still enjoyed it.

And to keep the Oldman theme going - his role as the one eyed, maniacal pimp with dreads and a Rasta accent in True Romance is gold!

Think I know which scene you refer to. Take it for what it is. Frankly, as social commentary I find it better than Tarantino's Django bullshit.

Surely nothing can beat this, as far as Gary Oldman is concerned... (but then again, have y'all seen him as the Devil?)

While I want to see Darkest Hour, I haven't yet.

I'll admit Zorg is a fun character, but I also enjoy his take(s) as Dracula myself. Though then again, that film played to the camp, but kept it serious enough.

Just rewatched it on Saturday.  Loved it even more the second time.  It is pretty amazing for what it pulls off: a character driven, character centered big ass blow-em-up special effects spectacular.   Michael Rooker is fantastic (as always), Baby Groot dancing to "Mr. Blue Sky" is my happy place, and "with a Cheap Trick song" is how all films should end.

Oldman is just a true chameleon.  He seems to be able to own any character he portrays.  Zorg, Sirius Black, Commissioner Gordon, George Smiley. Dracula. etc.

I'd be sorely pressed to name my top Oldman character in film..  BUT i can easily do a top 10!

JFK
Bram Stroker's Dracula
Fifth element
Leon (AKA the professional)
Murder in the first
The Scarlet letter
Airforce 1
Lost in space
paranoia
Child 44

I was searching through Amazon Prime last night looking for something to watch and ran across Angry Red Planet (1959).  I remember watching this on TV years ago when I was a lot younger, and at that time I thought it was a really cool movie!  After watching it again yesterday, I had to laugh at my younger self's taste in films!  It's one of those "so bad its funny" movies.  The best part in the whole thing, and the only scene I remembered from seeing it years ago was the fight with the "spider-bat-rat" monster, which (while very old-school FX) was probably at least a step up from the rest of the movie.    ::)
