Columbia Class OmniShuttle (ASF-based)
« on: 18 June 2017, 18:41:34 »
Was experimenting around with a 100-ton OmniFighter, to see how much cargo I really could get on there.  Went with an OmniFighter to make it easy to reconfigure.  First up, the pure cargo version:

If you'd rather use your shuttle for Science!, I've got the config for you. Reduces cargo, adds fuel, and adds a great deal of specialty equipment that would let it do observational research, communications relaying, or even electronic warfare in a pinch, though it's obviously limited by its low thrust and armor. For longer-duration missions, you've still got 30 tons of cargo, which also means, if you're feeling nuts, you could transport teams of explorers down to the surface in, say, PA(L) suits, kind of like how the Kirghiz carries elementals in one config.

OK, so you've got thirsty aerospace fighters out there that need to refuel. Fortunately, since this is an OmniFighter, you can work with that, and turn your Columbia into an aerospace tanker:

Columbia OmniShuttle Refueling
IS experimental
100 tons
BV: 216
Cost: 3,359,375 C-bills

Movement: 3/5
Engine: 100

Let's say you need to talk to All The People. I've got you covered:

Columbia OmniShuttle HPG
IS experimental

BV: 216
Cost: 1,878,196,250 C-bills

Movement: 3/5
Engine: 100
Heat Sinks: 10

Structural Integrity: 10
Armor: 64
                        Armor
-----------------------------
Nose                       20
Left Wing                  16
Right Wing                 16
Aft                        12

Equipment                      Loc
----------------------------------
Mobile HPG                     NOS
Cargo (10 tons)                AFT
Cargo (10 tons)                NOS
Communications Equipment (10 ton) NOS

You've got 20 tons of cargo for enhanced endurance, 10 tons of extra communications equipment, and a mobile HPG to reach out and touch someone.

Hm.  I like the idea, sort of a priority courier.  I could see these dropping ammo and parts to repair crews mid-battle, and a couple others.  Makes me wonder how much I could cram into my AU's twin-engine small craft...

I like it  O0

Another idea would be to add Internal Bomb Bays and use this to provide long range Arrow based (Anti-ship and Anti-Fighter) missiles against your enemies.  Kinda like an idea I saw for using the B1B as Missile truck to provide distance fire support for F22.

Dude - that's real.  There's a film on uTube doing that.

I'm impressed that USAF truly put the idea into work, it makes too much sense to provide the stealthly aircraft with added support from distance.

I will be honest I heard about in writing before I saw this video, years ago.

I'd like to see more on the tonnage/fuel available for the tanker variant.  Is it only carrying 10 tons of fuel?

Now I'm thinking Dale Brown's Flight of the old Dog, where a B-52 bomber was modified to have the option to carry just about anything in the USAF arsenal.

It's actually more like 70 tons, plus 10 tons cargo. MegaMekLab has weird formatting.
