Developed as a guerrilla fighter, the Archer ARC-3X1 was an extremely rare sight, in fact if it wasnt for a rare stroke of luck, the inner sphere would never have known about this version of the Archer.
Developed in secret on Terra during the amaris regime, it was built as a way to counter the ruthlessness of the Amaris forces occupying Terra should the need come. Earthwerks Incorporated planned on using another mech - the Excalibur - but found it was too difficult to modify into what they needed.
A disused and sold for scrap Royal variant Archer was found by the planning team and they used that as their test bed. The initial profile was to utilise the standard engine and keep the same speed profile, but incorporate jump jets to allow better maneuverability, However speed was determined to be critical, so a larger 350 XL engine was used (and imported from New Earth in secret).
The endo frame of the royal was in remarkable condition, all things considered, and when mated to the 350 XL engine, proved to have no stress issues with the higher speeds obtainable.
The cavernous LRM 20 racks were replaced with 2 sets of 3 Holly SRM 6 launchers, each set having 2 tons of case protected ammo. In addition, two Diverse Optic Type 18 medium lasers were retained in the arms, and finally a Blankenburg ER Large Laser was incorporated in the centre torso for long range sniping before getting in close for the kill.
A pack of these mechs would usually work in concert, each with one ton of inferno ammo to deal with any vehicles or infantry or force high heat on amaris mechs.
By the time General Kerensky arrived in the Sol system, there was barely a lance of these monstrosities left.
After the battle of Terra, only one partly functional 3X1 was listed as "operational" and according to records it left with the exodus fleet.
After several engagements they found that while the weapons package was effective, sometimes having longer ranged weaponry would be more beneficial.
In this case they devised the 3X2, which replaced one side of the Holly's and replaced them with an LRM 15 with 2 tons of CASE protected ammo. This also allowed a gaurdian ECM system to be installed to disrupt enemy systems. A counter variant noted as the 3X2a used a beagle active probe in place of the guardian ecm.
