Inspired by the Shadow Hawk refit thread, I wanted to make it a somewhat simple refit, trying to keep the original engine and frame. That being said, the armor and DHS switchover still means you'll need more than a socket wrench, a case of suds, and a free weekend to pull it off.  Firepower is anemic for Jihad-era play, but what ya gonna do?

Variants:
This variant of the Rifleman appeared in Capellan Confederation forces during
the closing days of the Jihad as a stopgap measure. In desperate need of
direct-fire support mechs, about two dozen -3N model Riflemen were stripped
down and refitted. The paired large lasers and light autocannon were replaced
with a Ceres Arms Smasher particle projectile cannon in the left arm, and a
Zhi-Tong Yao Gauss Rifle in the right. The torso medium lasers were removed to
provide two tons of slugs for the Gauss Rifle. The heat exchanger system was
replaced with new banks of double heat sinks, but due to a lack of supplies
about half of the Riflemen ended up with corrosive early generation coolant.
Almost ten tons of stealth armor protect the machine and make it a harder
target at range in keeping in its role; this was still far less protection than
many of its contemporaries.


After the Jihad, less than half a company of these refits had survived. The
remaining two that had the corrosive double heat sinks ended reinstalling the
old cooling system. The Ceres Arms Smasher was downgraded to a lighter version,
while the rest of the weight savings went into additional single heat sinks.

Variants:
Still reeling from the extensive damage done to the Hesperus II production
lines by the retreating Word of Blake, Defiance Industries exerted considerable
pressure on its Furillo and Kwangjong-ni facilities to bring in capital and
investments while Hesperus II recovered. Heavy lobbying with the LAAF
Quartermasters won Defiance a contract to refit Succesion Wars-era 'mechs,
including any old  -3 model Banshee chassis that could be dug up.  The
Kwangjong-ni factory already had a Banshee line for the -9S, so expansion was
not a problem. Furillo, on the other hand, had to build a new wing, but it was
hoped that the refurbishing line would be expanded to full production at some
point.

Instead of experimenting with radical and financially risky design concepts,
Defiance engineers decided it best to stick with more conventional norms,
albeit with the latest technology. The team decided to base the refit on the
-6S model's loadout. To free up mass, the GM 380 Light was downgraded to at
Pitban 285 Light, courtesy of Edaisch Motors. The engine company was looking to
expand their markets; eventually, they would end up being a major subcontractor
for other equipment, and be granted partner status on the design.

The LBX-10 was retained, but moved to the right arm with two tons of ammo
protected by the next generation of CASE. The Heavy Gauss Rifle was upgraded to
the improved model, coming off of the Hesperus II lines in limited quantities.
Proper failsafes for the improved heavy gauss rifle's volatie capacitors drew
no shortage of of heated discussion. While the left torso bay ended up being
equipped with the same CASE II in the right arm, volume constraints lead to
some components being installed in the center torso, with no room left for
similar protection. A massive heavy particle cannon, complete with capacitors,
was added to the right torso as a "backup" weapon. Supply was limited on the
advanced technology improved heavy gauss rifle and the particle projection
cannon capacitors. To take up the slack, Edaisch was granted a license to build
both the gauss rifle and the heavy PPC for the refit. Sixteen tons of
ferro-fibrous armor from Furillo replace the old Longanecker Plastisteel, but
other than that and the CASE II, there are few defensive improvements.

By the late 3080s, almost a battalion of Banshees had been refitted to the -10S
model, but demand was low. While the raw firepower was impressive, the cost and
maintenance of the most advanced equipment was prohibitive. Edaisch's teething
problems with their production of new equipment, particularly quality control,
did not help matters any. By 3090, the -10S was discontinued and Edaish
shuttered its nascent munitions line.

Variants:
In the wake of the liberation of Atreus, four battered and long-abandoned Grand
Titan hulks were recovered during salvage operations. By a twist of fate, all
four had belonged to members of the now-annihilated Knights of the Inner
Sphere. Joseph Parker, whose older brother had served and died with the 2nd
Knights, petitioned Alys Rousset-Marik for one of the Grand Titans. His goal
was to rebuild and refit one of the Grand Titans and pursue justice against the
Blakists. Word spread, and several other 'Warriors who lost family and friends
in the Knights added their names to the request. Rousset-Marik agreed the
request, provided that they served under her, and undertook the repair work
themselves. Despite the staggering material cost that would be needed to bring
the Grand Titans up to combat readiness, four assault mechs were not something
to be just cast aside.


Fortunately for Parker and his newly-found comrades, the legend of the Knights
still persisted in the League remnants. Donated salvage and volunteers came
forward, to will the four forward in their "quest". The massive LTV 400
extra-light engines were somehow brought back into operation. Machinists carved
up various and disparate pieces of junkyard endo-steel chassis, fitting them in
perfectly. Technicians worked miracles, restoring unidentifiable components
into working gyros, actuators, and electronics. Most important was a mix of
scavenged Blakist and gifted top-of-the-line weapons.


A brand new Lord's Light Heavy PPC in the right arm replaced the large pulse
laser mountings. Four five-tube multi-missile launchers, a mix of salvaged
Krupp and fresh off the line Shigunga models replaced the left and right torso
SRM racks and the left-arm LRM rack, fed by four tons of ammo. Blankenburg
medium variable-speed pulse lasers, pried from the wrecked carcasses of Blakist
war machines, sat in each shoulder. For anti-infantry and close-in work, a
small VSP replaced the anti-missile system in the head. Sixteen double heat
sinks gave these reborn Titans the ability to use even more firepower than
their old selves. As a final touch, the gold and white color scheme of the
Knights was restored, albeit with a grim reminder of their mission: the colors
were streaked with varying patches of grey, brown, and rust-red, representing
the battered and bloodied but unbowed last vestiges of the Knights.


Here is where facts and records blur into mysteries and stories; asides from a
handful of trivid clips and photos during the induction ceremony of the 'mechs
into the ranks of the Free World Resistance, no other records exist. No mention
in debriefings, black box logs, gun cameras, transport manifests, duty rosters,
etc. The names of the pilots, other than Joseph Parker, are nowhere to be
found, and even Parker's record is a blank after Atreus; he isn't even listed
as MIA or KIA.


On the other hand, the bar stories, the barracks gossip, and the conspiracy
newsletters are legion. A Protectorate Militia officer, suffering brain damage
from neurohelmet feedback and committed to an institution, rants about the
ghosts of the Knights of the Inner Sphere executing his surrendering unit. A
school teacher on Wasat recounts how a lance of gold and white mechs lined up
in a row, shielding a residential apartment complex from the blasts of
artillery shells. In a bar on Sirius, a veteran slurs a tale about a lone Grand
Titan not even a minute after brutally cutting down the command 'mech of a
Level III with laser and SRM fire, stepped between his guns and a powering down
Blakist tank. Two blocks away, in a dark alley, what was once a man gropes at a
tangled mess of myomers and metal that used to be Manei Domini implants. When
he closes his eyes, he still sees a stained white fist smashing through his
battle armor's chest. And so on, and on...


Then there are the stories on Terra. About how as one, the unit charged an
approaching half-division outside of the ruins of Rio de Janerio. About a
coalition POW camp in Siberia disappearing in a rain of missiles. About four
standing but wrecked 'mech frames, fully erect and silent in the jungles of
Cambodia. About four ruined craters, without so much as a sliver of debris
within them, surrounded by the wrecked remains of a Level III in the streets of
what was once Stockholm.


One anonymous article, making its way around LinkNet and increasing in
popularity, theorizes that these "Ghosts of the Knights" never existed. That a
real, resurrected Knights of the Inner Sphere unit would never be accepted by
the fragmented former League states.  That it was a propaganda attempt to keep
the honor and the legends of the Knights of the Inner Sphere alive. To give the
average former Leaguer hope in a return to brighter times.


Predictably, following every repost of the article is a flurry of captioned
ghost bear holograms and bets on how long before the repost gets Amaris'ed.

Variants:
An earlier prototype of the Penthesilea had a more balanced armament. Keeping
the extended range PPC and the autocannon of the main model, an MML-5 and two
tons of ammo was used instead of the light PPC. The multi-missile launcher's
flexibility was lauded in simulations; less so was the fact the right torso
held both the missile and autocannon stores. Even with CASE installed, too many
virtual engagements had errant right torso hits setting off the ammunition bays
and essentially crippling the 'mech.


The compact gyro was omitted from the prototype as well, presumably with the
mass savings going towards the MML's munitions. One of the medium lasers was
replaced with a small laser for anti-infantry work. Due to the increased bulk
of the standard gyro and armament, light ferro fibrous was used instead of the
standard ferro fibrous.


Due to difficulties in securing steady supplies of the MML-5 and the light
ferro fibrous armor, the -2H became the standard. If the Magistry can acquire
or set up the the required production facilities, Majesty Metals is looking to
revisit the old configuration.

Variants:
The -5Mr refit appeared shortly after 3059, first appearing with the 2nd Free
World Legionnaires during a training exercise. The armor was replaced with
Kallon FWL Special ferro fibrous armor, keeping roughly the same level of
protection but using the weight savings to install armored ammunition bays. The
armament was modified to give the Shadow Hawk more close-in firepower and
showcase recent developments. The autocannon was upgraded to an Imperator
Ultra-10, with enough ammunition for a minute and a half of sustained rapid
fire. The medium laser was replaced with an extended-range Diverse Optics
model. The larger weight of the autocannon though meant the removal of the SRM
rack and the downgrading of the long-range missile unit to a 10-tube type.

There are a few records of further modifications to the -5Mr throughout the
Jihad, but the only consistent one is the replacement of the LRM launcher with
one or more of the new multi-missile launchers.

The Blood Spirits must be in dire straits indeed, if this Watch dispatch is correct. Battle reports indicate that refitted battlemechs, presumably from whatever long-ago leftovers the Spirits have in their warehouses, are being pressed into service. While we have extensive guncam footage, sensor logs, and damaged remains from multiple types, as of this report we only have reasonably complete models of two of them; a Griffin and a Shadow Hawk.

Judging from what our Techs can tell us, the 'mechs we have on hand appear to have been modified in limited fashion. Engine and internals appear unchanged. Armor appears to be original as well, with some Blood Spirit manufactured conventional plates installed here and there to maximize protection. Electronics and sensors were refurbished to modern standards, but no advanced or specialized equipment otherwise. The cooling system was overhauled with freezers, one of the few concessions to necessity.

The big change was armaments, all ubiquitous Blood Spirit weapons. The Griffin has an extended range large laser and LRM-15 rack; uninspiring and uncreative, but effective fire support nonetheless. The Shadow Hawk's arsenal deviates slightly more from its original, turning it into more of an urban infighter. The autocannon is replaced with a heavy protomech model, the original missile racks with banks of SRM-4s, and the medium laser is traded for an array of microlasers. Unimpressive at first glance, but the unit we captured came at the cost of close to a mixed binary of infantry, battle armor, and vehicles in bloody street to street fighting.

This Firestarter refit first appeared in Clan Jade Falcon garrison units in
3079, defying several (in retrospect long-discredited) stereotypes; that the
pathological conservatism of the clan would be trumped by the tactical need of
what could be termed a support mech, and that they would tacitly acknowledge
their material shortfalls and deign to refit and deploy an inferior Inner
Sphere design.

The Jade Falcons had quantities of captured Firestarters due to their invasion
and conflicts with the-now Lyran Commonwealth. The technical aspects of the
modifications come across in one of two ways: as a sign of duress, making just
enough upgrades to make it viable and to get them out to the field as fast as
possible, or as a sign of contempt, deigning to waste any more than the minumum
amount of resources on it. The weapons loadout was the only real point of
consistency. A Diamond Shark plasma rifle and a ton of ammo replaces the
center-torso flamers. A pair of AP Gauss Rifles take the place of the old side
torso machine guns. The increased weight of the plasma rifle over the old
flamers meant one of the medium lasers and one of the remaining flamers were
removed from opposite arms. The remaining medium laser was upgraded to an
extended range model, while the flamer was replaced with its lighter Clantech
counterpart.

Technically, the swapping out of the old armor and heat sinks for six tons of
Clan composites and up to date freezers was supposed to have been standardized
as well. Due to pride and limited resources though, at least half of these
models encountered have neither the improved protection and/or cooling,
limiting their effectiveness.

Interestingly enough, there are rumors that this has inspired the Diamond Shark
to start working on a "IIC" model of the Firestarter.

Variants:
One of Lang Industries' first upgrades to the Shadow Hawk after the refinement
of Battlemech technology, the -2X was simply a modernized -1R. The primitive
240-rated engine was replaced with a (then) top of the line Core Tek 275. While
heavier, the Core Tek increased the top speed by over 20 kph. The increased
power of the engine allowed the installation of two additional jump jets,
giving the -2X even more manuverability in tight spaces.

The chassis and armor were likewise upgraded to the latest standards. Nine and
a half tons of the new Maximillian 43 plating provided the same level of
protection of the older and heavier armor. The armament was modestly upgraded.
A second medium laser was added to the left arm, leading Lang Industries' test
pilots to nickname the -2X "Gunslinger". The medium autocannon was replaced
with a heavier model, reducing range but increasing firepower. This changed the
role of the -2X to a mid-ranged brawler. While the SLDF was interested in the
-2X, the Quartermasters wanted a more generalist trooper design instead. As a
result, the -2X prototypes were shelved, but the experience Lang Industries
engineers gained were put to good use developing the -2H, which the Star League
did end up buying.

This radical refit of the Cataphract was seen during the closing days of the
Jihad and beyond, mostly in the ranks of CCAF forces, but at least one was
spotted in RAF colors after the fall of Terra. Heavily dependent on captured
Word of Blake equipment, at most a company of these "Interdictor" models
existed according to compiled official records. A 350-class light fusion
engine, hooked up to a supercharger, allows the heavy mech to travel over 110
kilometers an hour in short bursts. Entering enemy range rapidly, the
Cataphract can disrupt enemy formations with plasma rifle and heavy variable
speed pulse laser fire. Far more dangerous, when used properly, is the
experimental Angel ECM suite to interfere with hostile electronics, and a TAG
laser to designate enemies with artillery fire. Eleven tons of heavy
ferro-fibrous armor allows the Cataphract to weather the firepower it is sure
to attract, however briefly.

Variants:
This experimental version of the Flamberge was first seen in a Clan Jade Falcon
raid on the Clan Wolf Occupation Zone sometime after the close of the Jihad.
The Merchant-Warrior who acquired this information was not able to even get a
location of its first sighting, only some BattleROM video captures and a
heavily redacted after action report.


It appears to be a homage to the Summoner in its Prime configuration, a
favorite of Jade Falcon warriors. The primary weapons are the same as the
Prime: extended-range particle cannon, a heavy LB-X class autocanon, and a
fifteen-tube long range missile launcher. An extended-range medium and small
laser were added, as extra close-in firepower and as a token attempt to provide
anti-infantry capability.


The most striking capability of this model is the startling ability to jump
over 210 meters in a single bound, presumably through the use of experimental
partial wing technology and as many improved jump jets as the frame can handle.
The after-action report states that ferro-fibrous armor fragments were
recovered from the battlefield instead of the standard armor the Flamberge
normally mounts; presumably a weight-savings measure. We are assigning the
reporting name "Warlock" to this variant, given its superior mobility and
protection over the standard Summoner.


We have, of course, sent orders to Watch operatives in Jade Falcon space to
make discreet inquiries into any further information, particularly whether this
was serving as a testbed or if the Falcons intend on mass producing this model.

The Word of Blake started using this Hatamoto-Chi refit starting in 3072, after
battle salvage from operations in Draconis Combine space netted them several
battered frames. Meant to serve as a heavy point-man in a C3i network, the
-27WB strips out the engine and all the weapons for massive LTV-400 extra-light
engines pulled from the wrecks of Charger-3Ks, courtesy of the Dragon's combat
losses. A staggering twenty percent of the mech''s mass has been devoted to
housing eight improved jump jets. With a 240-meter jump capability, Blakist
pilots can easily close with the enemy or manuver out of harm's way. A lone
Blankenburg large variable speed pulse laser is a pittance of armament for an
assault mech, but the C3i module in the center torso is considered to be the
primary weapon of the Hatamoto-Blake. Fifteen tons of armor attempt to help
weather the inevitable concentration of firepower a C3i spotter will attract,
especially with the proliferation of area effect and improved accuracy weapons.

No more than a handful of these 'mechs saw service with the Word of Blake
Militia divisions, mostly in Combine space. While highly agile and
well-protected, the combat life-span of any given Hatamoto-Blake was short
lived, as Kuritan and later Coalition commanders devoted inordinate amounts of
resources and firepower to destroying these machines on sight. None were known
to have survived past even the first waves of Operation SCOUR.

Variants:
Introduced shortly after the secession of the Lyran Alliance in 3057, this
Wolfhound model came as a complete surprise; namely, that this model came from
Defiance Industries of Furillo.  Both TharHes Industries and Arc-Royal
Mechworks, neither of whom had issued a license, fought a long and bitter court
battle, notably during which no judge issued any moratorium on new Wolfhound
production by Defiance. Most analysts believe this was one of Katherine
Steiner-Davion's power consolidation ploys; simultaneously giving her an
additional Wolfhound production line, tweaking one of Morgan Kell's holdings,
and courting Defiance Industries's loyalty. TharHes was mollified with several
lucrative contracts, begrudgingly accepting their role as collateral damage in
the drawing of lines in the Lyran Alliance.


In the meanwhile, the Furillo plant went about making their own adjustments to
the Wolfhound. The conventional chassiss was redesigned with Endo Steel for
weight savings and the standard plate was replaced with Durallex Light Ferro
Fibrous, produced mere miles away. Copying the WLF-2, double heat sinks and a
Cyclops XII ER Large Laser were used.  Plans to upgrade the medium laser array
were shelved after interviews with pilots showed their preference for a more
heat-managable arsenal. The most striking change was the uprating of the
engine, making this Wolfhound swifter than its predecessors without resorting
to expensive and vulnerable extra-light engines. This required the downgrading
of the rear medium laser to a smaller model.


By 3059, the line on Furillo was open for business, and both the LAAF and
mercenaries were lining up at the door. But by 3061, everything had turned
sour, and production had slowed to a crawl, plagued by dozens of issues.
Persistent but unconfirmed rumors pointed to corporate sabotage by riled
Arc-Royal Mechworks personnel, Morgan Kell calling in favors to ensure delivery
schedule slips, "gremlins" punishing Defiance for dealing with the devil, etc

Variants:
One of the original candidate prototypes for the Capellan Confederation's
version of the Emperor, the 6L-X was shelved early in development after the
collapse of the Confederation's alliance with the Free Worlds League, with only
a half-finished chassis later finished into a -6L production model.


While the extralight engine and jump jets of the -6A were kept, everything else
was changed for a new mission profile. Three light gauss rifles with four tons
of reloads, to be imported from Imperator Automatic Weaponry in Marik space,
were to be the new main armament. The radical change in armaments would turn
the midrange brawler to a long-range sniper. Further emphasising that role was
the proposed installation of stealth armor, still undergoing testing at the
time. Due to the mass of the light gauss rifles and the bulkiness of the
stealth armor, a pair of extended-range medium lasers, also League imports, was
the only backup weaponry.

The Banchee you posted waaaay back looks a little bit like my AS7-DOOM, but yours actually makes some kind of sense with having a crit-seeker.

For the more recent designs:
The Hatamoto Blake, I get that it is a scout hunter, but wow there's not much going on there...  Well, unless it charges...  Because it's kind of a Charger.

The Locust is freakin crazy, I love it.  It's like a sports car on a battlefield...  But not quite as immediately wrecked.  Only problem is, it will practically be relying on the MASC to not get hit, and that's a recipe for disaster.

The Emperor is nice, a more jumpy less headcappy IS version of the Stone Rhino with better range.  Nothing to complain about there.

Meant to serve as a heavy point-man in a C3i network, the
-27WB strips out the engine and all the weapons for massive LTV-400 extra-light
engines pulled from the wrecks of Charger-3Ks, courtesy of the Dragon's combat
losses. A staggering twenty percent of the mech''s mass has been devoted to
housing eight improved jump jets. With a 240-meter jump capability, Blakist
pilots can easily close with the enemy or manuver out of harm's way. A lone
Blankenburg large variable speed pulse laser is a pittance of armament for an
assault mech, but the C3i module in the center torso is considered to be the
primary weapon of the Hatamoto-Blake.

Variants:
The -2L refit of the Striker was developed to make it more of a close-in
brawler instead of a mid-ranged generalist. Similar to the -2S refit, the -2L
takes the autocannon replacement to its logical extreme, using a Mydron A
assault-class autocannon with two tons of ammunition, all crammed into the
right torso. This gives the Striker considerable short-ranged firepower. The
PPC in the left torso remains to provide a respectable long-range punch. The
armor was increased to the Striker's structural maximum, as it would be
expected to spend much of its time getting up close and personal, and would
need the increased protection. The tradeoffs were the removal of three heat
sinks and a medium laser, so pilots are instructed to avoid using the PPC and
the autocannon together if possible. The two remaining medium lasers were moved
into each arm, giving the Striker a modest ability to deal with flanking
attacks.


Several dozen of the Capellan Confederation's Strikers were converted to the
-2L configuration throughout the Third Succession War, where they served
satisfactorily, if without major noteriety; yeoman's work.  The majority were
lost in the fires of the Fourth Succession War, and it is unknown if the
remainder were ever upgraded with the rediscovery of Lostech.

Variants:
The Exterminator, while an impressive piece of technology, did not live up to
its billing as a headhunter unit, mostly due to its lack of firepower. The
Exterminator's armament was adequate against traditional mobile HQ vehicles and
field command posts; much less so against the growing number of command-console
equipped mechs. A new design was commissioned by the Star League Special Forces
Command, and the end result was a heavily  modified Shadow Hawk. Any reference
to the project name or a distinguishing model number or code name has been lost
to the many conflicts over the centuries. (As placeholders, -3SFC is used for
the model number and Black Heart used for the model name.)


Star League tacticians determined that the Gauss Rifle was the only weapon that
could reliably eliminate any Battlemech in existence with a single shot from
long range, albeit that shot had to be to the target's cockpit. The proposed
design would combine the Gauss Rifle with the Chameleon Light Polarization
Shield and Null Signature System, giving the Black Heart unmatched at the time
stealth capabilities. Additional jump jets were added to the -3SFC's frame,
along with myomer acceleration circuitry, to aid in easier and faster
infilration/exfiltration. A single medium laser serves as the lone backup
weapon, impressing on operatives to avoid any actual combat if possible.


To accomodate all these advanced technologies,an extra-light 275 rated engine
was used to save additional weight, and double-strength heatsinks were
installed to deal with the extra heat produced by the stealth equipment.


While expensive, the specialty nature of the Black Heart did not turn out to be
its deployment bottleneck; it was finding and/or training pilots to be able to
consistently decapitate Battlemechs at almost 700 meters distance. Indeed,a
training school had to be set specifically for this purpose, and even then it
was several years after the the first unit was completed before it was assigned
a pilot.


It should go without saying that due to the nature of the Black Heart and its
use, its deployment and service history is most likely shrouded in mystery, or
more likely dropped in a trash can with a thermite grenade. If any survived up
to General Kerensky's liberation of Terra or even left with him on the Exodus,
it is for certain they would've been abandoned by Nicholas Kerensky's Clans as
antithetical to their ways.
