Wolf in Exile Golden Keshik
« on: 29 April 2011, 21:35:28 »
We're all the harshest critics of our own work, and these aren't perfect, but I have to admit I kinda like them. I had a good time with the scheme and a "forest" type of basing.

I had a lot of trepidation about painting a famous mech, especially one Pendragon has done so well already, but here's my humble interpretation of Grinner.

My first kinda sorta half-assed kitbash. It's not quite the Widowmaker, and I'm not Mr. Balk... heh... the AC is from a 25mm Elemental I think,  I don't know, it was around. A little too small but there it is. And a little sawing on the one gun, it's a mess, but I learned a lot doing it so I might actually try to make the Widowmaker variant next time. I need to get a better saw and a dremel... anyway, put him in a "stalking" kind of pose that I think captures the Wolf vibe.

I'm still working out how to make the splashing water in the stream. I'll get it figured out... eventually.

The Loki and Elementals. I'm not particularly happy with those, and have more to paint still that I hope to do better with practice.

And the Timber Wolf, the jeweling came out okay on the first try. I just about pee'd myself.

Fun!

Sure. It's pretty basic and my 11 year old did a lot of it. He and his buddies are in the middle of a Ghost Bear attack on a Davion fortified ridge or something. (As I've mentioned before, we play a very simplified version of the rules that's a little more kid friendly and enables you to manage more mechs on the table, and we like more! But we're gradually learning the "real" game (learning it again, for me).

It started as a Hundred Year's War battlefield, the crossing of the Dordogne at Bergerac (which wasn't much of a battle but provided some interesting medieval urban/walls terrain and tactical situations for us):

And then we took all that out but kept the rivers and hills and the boy put the rocks down and we've got this:

That board is all kinds of yummy.  And, I like the crisp look of the Omnis.

This has got to be one of the best painted units that I've ever seen, hands down.  The uniformity of the entire formation is great, you've got plenty to be proud of here.  The terrain board is no slouch either, I'd kill for a terrain board that sweet looking.  Great job all the way around.

Thanks for the encouragement!

(I know, we're all harder on ourselves than we ought to be...)

As for the board, thanks too! I've been gaming for over 30 years now, so I've picked up a lot of terrain/table ideas along the way. Our next project is going to be to flip the carpet, which is blackish on the back, and make a city in battletech scale. And my wife is patient enough with me that when we finished the basement she allowed me to annex it for my hobby uses. At least she knows where to find us, she figures. :)

Those are really, really great. Not just the painting, but the modification for action poses. My favourite has to be the Mad Dog, but they're all excellent!  :)

Nothing short of incredible!  Your units are fantastic, uniform and beautifully done.  Your board is to-die-for.  You are also blessed with an wonderful and understanding spouse who lets you keep that thing set up.  I'm sure more than one of us are currently Jade-Falcon-green despite our presonal affiliations.

Bravo! and again, Bravo!

Nice job, love the medieval terrain setup also.

A tip on modding arms for the widowmaker, etc. If you don't care about the condition of the removed bits, take a pair of straight cutters, like gf9 sells or if you can get them cheap from Lowes is better, and cut the barrels off flush with the block of the arm, then sand and build the configuration you want.

Excellent minis!

And if this is your idea of a "pretty basic" table, I'd be scared to see what you consider impressive.  I'd love to have a table like that.
