At the end of the Jihad the WarShip assets of the Society mostly consisted out of YardShips and jump-capable hulks taken from the Clan Home Worlds and the Inner Sphere. After analysis it was determined that refurbishing all these different hulks to their original states was non-desirable for the Society. With their limited industrial base it would be more difficult to support a diverse group of WarShips. An additional problem was that their original specifications did not fit the future requirements of the Society.
Thus the decision was made to recycle all the hulks and some of the obsolete active WarShips. The gained materials were then used to construct a number of ArcShips that were optimized for low maintenance requirements and longterm deep-space operations. In appearance the design looks like a stretched angular Potemkin, with large number of collars and an reinforced repair facility at the nose.
The design derives its name from its most unusual feature, which is a state-of-the-art Library Core. This data core carries a copy of all humanity's knowledge that has been gathered by the Society. The primary focus is on all scientific fields, including research data, but it also stores data about other fields such as concerning various cultures. Each core has a large staff of archivists and researchers assigned to them. The ship also has research, manufacturing and Sibko facilities. Thus even if the worse were to happen, the Society can rebuild itself from a single surviving ArcShip.
To minimize the chances of detection it will almost never deploy its sail and the class even has additional heat sinks for the ability to directionally cool the ship, giving the Alexandria class even better chances for evading detection. But if the ship and its fleet is detected, then it should flee as fast as possible. During this it can use Screen Launchers and extensive AMS coverage to prevent hits. In combat the Broadside Naval Lasers will engage the enemy first. If the enemy manages to survive the Naval Lasers, then ship will use the side-mounted NACs to force the enemy to keep their distance. Against enemy ASF it has a couple of HAG-40 emplacements, but the Alexandria class relies more on its own ASFs and DropShips to keep them away.
After nearly half a century of work the hulks were used up. As a result each YardShip has one or more ArcShips escorting it. The next builds are slated to be used for exploring the Outer Periphery and beyond. The hope is that in the future that the Society will have countermeasures against the blackout so that these ships can also rebuild and extend the Society HPG net. With a functional net they will be able to report any important findings.
