« on: 24 March 2014, 15:00:17 »
Hi everyone

I wish IWM had come up with a HAG version of it, i don't think its same barrel is it?

I've had mine for a while. Absolutely gorgeous, and almost infinitely poseable. Even speck's photos don't come close to doing it justice. O0

Woah, i hadn't realize how much shorter the Atlas III is incomparison to the others.  Its nearly as tall as the original mini.

It doesn't look too much shorter than the Atlas II when you consider there is no base under it like all of the other minis pictured.

Perfect. Thank you. :)

From the picture I would say it would still be about 2mm shorter. But that's about it. And what the III looses in height it gains in width. It looks far more massive than the original and the II.

In that picture the Atlas II isn't on a hexbase and neither is the Atlas III.   That said, i properly would have to turn a hexbase upside down in order to properly mount it.  I haven't tried yet.

Atlas II is nearly as tall as the old "Tall" Atlas mini, which i don't have any problems with be honest with you.  If the II had hex base it be same size.   I'm still not sold on the Dark Vadar/Soundwave looks that Atlas II has.   Thankfully the football player Atlas hasn't gotten sculpt yet.

If you have either Green or Gray stuff just fill the hex base with that and it will fit. I have started doing that with some of my mechs with the wide feet

That's option.  I keep getting a confused on which one to get since they have different sizes now.  Can they be ordered through the FLG?  I'd rather keep them in business.

I'm no so handy with green stuff, i haven't heard of gray stuff before to be honest.

Far as I know, your store can get anything that's not archived.  Can probably get the archived stuff too if they're willing to pay the fee.

Gray stuff is Green stuff in a different color.

I just fill the base with sand, and drip superglue on it. Rock-hard filler that'll finn in gaps for minis with bases, or makes a good flat surface for gluing feet-only minis to a recessed base, while still providing a textured surface to make terrain.

I've tried that with Elmer's glue which works about 50 percent of the time.  It ends up that either didn't find right kind of sand/fine enough or it wasn't enough glue and the material ends up leaving cavities in it.  I hadn't tried using super glue, i'll give it a shot.  I just need poke around for some decent sand.

I musta lucked out. I just bought a few bags of sand from the local craft store's model railroad section several years ago, and it's been working great for me ever since. Never paid any attention as to what kind of sand.

[edit]This also assumes you're using a very fluid superglue, the kind that will flow into the sand easily. I have no clue if gels will work with this.

Also, something I tried last night that worked quite well: Using this technique on the underside of Intro Box units is apparently a nice way to increase their heft, and make them a lot more bottom-heavy(and thus stable). Still not as heavy as a metal mini, but now it'll take more than a good breeze to send them flying.

You might want to try this trick that model railroaders use for track ballast.

I didn't get a shield with mine, so it going be scratch work unless they come up with something.  Picture of the Atlas III matches what i got though.

I was stupid, it did come with shields.  I didn't think too much of it when i assmbled them.   Legs had knee pads, they don't cound as shields, but arms are shields but there similar to the knee pads from my perception without looking at the TRO itself.

I was surprised the TRO made them shields.  Thought for sure they'd be modular armor.

I originally thought i read in WizKids original write up that Mech itself was suppose to be modular or have some Omnipod capacities like a OmniMech.

Working on one currently for a 'project  >:D' and I love the look of the beasty. And FYI, it comes in 17 pieces so there is really no limit to posability.  O0

Atlas III.

(checks Sarna) Erp...ok, my bad. This was a custom she built in skunk-works then.

She named it Atlas III, lol (she normally runs a modified AS7-D-H2 so....)

Damn, I've created a monster...  ;D

Atlas III.

(checks Sarna) Erp...ok, my bad. This was a custom she built in skunk-works then.

She named it Atlas III, lol (she normally runs a modified AS7-D-H2 so....)

Damn, I've created a monster...  ;D

Yeah, I lucked out really. Her first game I talked her into playing she took a Fafnir and HC'ed my near pristine Summoner needing 12's to hit in the first place.  :o The really scary thing is she has a habit of pulling victory from the jaws of defeat on a regular basis. Last game we played she had a modified Atlas III that was missing a leg, took 4 pilot hits and went unconcious. After waking up after 2 rounds of being unconcious she fires her only remaining medium laser and floating crits the Peregrine that was about to stomp on her head. 2 tac's to the Gyro... and the stuff she does with JJ's is Mechwarrior Joanna worthy.  ;D

Mine's just terrifying. Nothing really fancy in terms of tactics or gunnery aside from a distinct love of using Locusts(-1Vs only, she won't touch any others) to knock down larger 'mechs using kicks. Took down an Archangel that way, with only a Jenner as a partner.

What's really scary is her ability to read the other players perfectly and know exactly what they'll do. You know that line about no plan surviving contact with the enemy? Hers do. :o

...and next, she wants to try artillery. We're gonna die.

I'm lucky, in that Stina won't touch Clantech. She also won't go for most things more advanced than intro tech. (Basically, if there's rules more complex than intro tech, she's probably not a fan of it.) Finally, she doesn't like hovers, and won't use missiles.

Despite all that, she'll still kick anyone's ass. The only time I ever saw her on the verge of losing a game, the game's venue caught fire.

Now that's a tactic I've got to try sometime!  It'll have to wait until my group plays somewhere other than my apartment though.

If this happens, I'll go in the complete opposite spectrum of my usual tactics.
I'll LAM swarm for one game.
Like little zerglings they'll sacrifice themselves against the artillery.

Also I like how all those pieces look on the Atlas III.
If I didn't already have a horrible back log of mini work, I'd probably pick up two.

The assembly isn't actually terribly difficult. All the pieces fit very nice and snug together and the onlt points that NEED to be pinnes are the hips and shoulders. Everything else has ample surface area for scoring and regular super glue to bond.

Assembly wasn't bad for mine, either.  No pinning needed (not that I can pin anyhow).  Had to adjust the angle of the hip pads/plates to match the bend of the legs more closely, but that was easily done by hand.

My gripe on pose-ability is that I couldn't find a way to get the left arm turned across the torso in a shielding fashion.  The way the forearm fits the upper arm prevents it- you'd have to file away a large portion of the upper arm to get room to twist the forearm in that direction.  Significant work on the left shoulder joint might make it possible, but I didn't want to risk ruining it to try.

Perhaps sawing/separating the upper arm from the elbow joint, twisting, and then re-pinning?  A bit beyond me to try for now.

<shrug> I've had too many "just glued" miniatures (particularly BT miniatures) come apart during normal handling over the years.  I pin everything these days.  Feet to base, legs to feet, hips to legs, arms to torso, etc., etc., etc.   8)

That's actually not a bad idea. Build it sans feet, then glue it into a standard hex base, or another one with a recessed top. Fill it partially with some kind of liquid filler(I'd go for elmer's glue for cheapness), and let it dry completely while sitting at an angle. When that's done, add some more glue, put it back at an angle, and let it dry again. Lather, rinse, repeat, until the base is full. You'll end up with a smooth surface that has fluidlike ripples on it. O0

I emailed IWM about it. They got back to me within a few hours and are shipping me new feet. This is the third instance I've contacted them about missing parts and they've been super cool about it every time.

You know, you could always mount the mini without the feet while waiting for the feet to arrive, then mount the feet on a hex with lots of burnt looking terain. Use it for whenever an Atlas has a catastrophic engine explosion.

Who did you contact at IWM, as on mine the lower part of main torso is missing, I sent a email to their ihaveaproblem email address a week ago and still have not heard anything back from them.

They are extremely swamped with GenCon coming up, and are honestly slow at emailing back anyways, but hang tight...you will get an answer soon. Worse case, contact the user named "Speck" here on the boards, he can get a priority message over to them to help you out.

Well I'll give it a bit more time then, but here is a photo of my bad torso compared to a good one, anyone else seen this kind of problem. In all the years of my buying battledroids then battletech minatures this is the first bad piece I think I have ever got. So good track record there.

Yep. The heated metal has to flow into the mold and sometimes, if the mold is too cool, the metal will solidify before it spreads out enough to fill every void.

Thanks guys, But I am a mold maker at a fast prototyping company so I do know what happened, was just wondering if others were having similar problems which might mean a problem with the mold itself not having enough venting.

Don't think I've had a casting issue like that in a long time.  Some mini I can't remember had an amorphous lump on its shoulder once, but I can't recall which mini it was.

If your email doesn't get answered soon, file a support ticket on IWM's site (https://www.ironwindmetals.com/support/index.php).  They may take a couple of days to respond, but I have filed maybe 5 tickets now and they have all been handled very well.  Spare part request, missing part, bad cast, you name it - IWM has done a great customer service job when I've dealt with them.

Which reminds me I need to open one for the missing upper leg sprue on a Dragon II - I got two lower leg sprues, so I can't finish assembling mine.  :(
