One-Hex-Wonders (post your own)
« on: 28 June 2014, 17:08:35 »
i've been making little single hex sized scenario/objective pieces to use in classic battletech hex map games.

As I understand it the map isnt in scale with the miniatures and the position of each mini is considered to represent the fact that that mech is in that area. With this in mind I wanted to keep all my pieces to a single hex sized item so they would make sense on the map. But making them at Z scale meant that they couldn't be much bigger than a radio shack or a small supply yard or the like.

so here's the first two of what i'm calling my One-Hex-Wonders

first up is Laid-Back Eddy's Peace-Time-Radio Shack

followed by a sadly Generic and nameless stationary weapon platform with a crew of two.

Really nice work. My units would be proud to claim any of those objectives.  I especially like the weapon platform, great internal detail.

they're the same ones I used for my researchers and civilians/prisoners bases.

thanks,

the weapon platform is just an Ikea screw grabber with a spare mech weapon (from the Marauder pictured) jammed in the gap. It was just the right size and shape to fit those little guys inside so i just added an earphone part for a lid and  a little hinged side panel and painted it up inside all nice and homely-like and popped the little guys on in.

Absolutely fantastic!

I look forward to seeing more!

Just a note on the scale of the figures. These are sold as 1:300 architectural scale. Z scale is 1:220 and they would be too big.

Ok, so are the little people Z scale or 1:300? i know they're a little bigger than would exactly match most mechs but then most mechs don't exactly match each other. well, as far i'm concerned its all close enough for rock and roll. thanks for your comments. I look forward to showing more soon. i have the ubiquitous coms tower, a mine field and a missile silo in the making.

Actually, You got me confused so I made a small comparison.

You're right about the scale. It is 8mm, not 6mm, but for Mech's it really does not matter.

I use the same sets of civilians, hence my interest - no intention of nailing Your beautiful work.

my most recent offering in this little series of one hex terrain/objective pieces comes as follows,

three mine field hexes

the ubiquitous coms tower

missile silo B5 (our last best hope for total thermonuclear destruction)

and I liked my first little bunker so much that I made another one. Bunker 2 (the original now has a yellow 1 on the door.)

thanks again folks for all your kind comments

First off, thanks to everyone again for your encouraging comments, I've enjoyed making so many of these little pieces but its even better to be able to share them with y'all.

Next in the series is a forest camouflaged watchtower (complete with one joker and one thief.)

Not neglecting all those lovely water features on our hex maps I made a little Marina.

and then, with perhaps one of my favorite pics so far, inspired by the Dragoon-Ryuken raid on Dr Banzai's research prototypes in Wolves on the Border it's my little mech sized swag crates. Each with logos of Inner Sphere weapons and research companys including team banzai themselves.

And the final installment to the series comes in the form of an ejector seat and pilot. The seat can be placed in the hex of choice for the game and the pilot may be detached to hide nearby or escape depending if it's enemy or friendly mechs who home in on the rescue beacon in the seat first.

thanks again to everyone who has viewed and commented and kept my enthusiasm up for this project.

The parachute is made from a small circle of greaseproof paper. All crumpled up it gets soft enough to shape convincingly.once you have it suitably wrinkly give it a very light coat of paint and then shape it and glue it into place.

The seat came out of a toy car.it was a little big so I cut it down a bit and added some detail with thin plasticard. The pilot is another z scale dude but this time with some green stuff addeded to model in a helmet, backpack and carryall.y`know cause every crashed pilot has to have some valuable maguffin to fight over.

Thanks folks. They're all made from junk so if you can find stuff the right size and shape you're all set.

Quad barrel turret: the base is a little cable tie point, that you would stick to a wall to keep a lamp cable or something from hanging loose.
The main body is just a bit of carved pvc foam from when I had my gutters replaced. The shape is like a box with the top front edge cut away and the lower rear one too.
The barrels are just thick wire. I found a large paper clip that was thick enough and cut some straight sections the same length. The ends are ball point pen ink tube bits. I jammed the wires in and cut the end off the tube and drilled a couple of holes in each side. They're mounted on some plastic bits from my bits box. I angled the mounts to give it a bit of character. Top barrels narrower than the lower ones.
Then the two armour plates on the sides were just straight out of my bits box.

The green one is mostly made from a UK child safety plug. You know the plastic covers you put on an electrical socket to stop kids poking in the holes. The smaller pins make the guns and the larger pin was cut down into the same shape as the quad barrel body. A couple of cylinders to attach the weapons on each side and the whole thing mounted on a spare marauder foot (hence the choice of mech in the photo)
a couple of wires on the back are glued in for the power feeds and some fine detailing on the weapon casing is thick paper.

The white dome turret starts with a bottle top, a Robinsons fruit shoot lid, the top of it is cut off to get the reinforced disc. Then I found a plastic dome the right size. It happened to be the lid of an Olbas oil inhaler. It's about the size of a chap stick lid. Anyway I cut the end off and cut a gap in the side for the guns. I also used the lip on the opening of the tube to cover the join.
Then I cut down some space marine scout shotguns flipped them upside down and glued them together then they were glued inside the gap and some detailing was added to the outside of the dome with paper.

There's a little four leaf clover on each one. I found these lying about and thought they'd help my new guns get some lucky shots.

Amazing fabrication skills.  Here I was expecting a huge list of "scrapyard" parts that were used in the creation.  It sounds like I'm going to have to just start keeping an eye out for little bits that I can swipe here and there and start collecting them for fabrications.  I'll have to see if there's some stuff to scavenge for making a series of more uniform turrets and emplacements.

Thank you, greatly, for taking the time to describe how everything is built and the process you used for all of it.

No problem. Everything you see here is made just the same way so if there's anything else you'd like to know how it was made just ask. I have very little by way of junk yard mech parts so it's almost all just bits and bobs.

Now I am trying to find where the plug covers from Christmas light sets ended up because I do not think they were thrown away.

I had thought of taking some of the bamboo from chopsticks my wife gets when we get Chinese food to go to turn into artillery or AT Gun barrels.  Tried using one on a hex base as a fallen tree the mech was stepping on but I needed more time to work over the chopstick chunk and it would not fit with the mech I was building.

Where did you get the little clover?

they came out of a little wish jar. You write your wishes on piece of paper, roll it up and stick it in a jar that has these little plastic shamrocks or four leaf  clovers in it for luck. Then maybe you're supposed to bury it. In this case a child left it in the restaurant I work in and I shamelessly pilfered her luck for my shooting dice rolls.

Really nice work Cidwm.

It's funny the things I'm looking at that, from a fabrication perspective, I find are really making these pieces. The little square on top of the bottle cap that helps break up the symmetry and just adds a little tech to an otherwise basic shape. So simple but so effective.

And the little power wire at the back of the weapon connecting the ppc to its base. Not essential but again such a simple and effective touch just to add a little more detail.   And the little bushy grass at the back just helps ground the piece nicely.

Thanks for sharing is great to be part of the inspiration chain. I should probably mention that it was seeing Overkill C7's communication towers posted here

http://bg.battletech.com/forums/terrain/communication-towers-and-dropship/

that got me started in the first place. So thanks OC7 for that.

That PPC turret is giving me a great idea.  I know I've got plenty of clicky tech Ghosts to tear up.

Here's a few pieces I made awhile back that are still waiting to see some paint.

The little tank is just some stuff from my bits box along with a little wooden knob.   The other two are GI Joe pieces.  The tall one used to be some kind of missile launcher.  I simply cut off the handle and added a square piece of plastic card to the top.  Thought about adding detail to the top but in the end decided that I liked being able to set a model on top of it.   The littler one was the back pack off a pyro viper.  Just removed the nub that attached to the figures back and a hose that looked a little out of place for the scale I was going for.

This one is another bits box(es) raid.  Includes parts from WH40k, Battle Fleet Gothic, and MW:DA.

Space Marines are guys who look at a chainsaw and think, “That should be balanced for parrying.”

Very nice, I can see these as scattered around a hex map to represent an industrial facility of some sort, with points awarded for damage on specific items. 10 points for destroying the "primary Generator" 5 points for The research tower 1poont for the silo etc

Here is another objective that I thought of after being inspired off the GHQ forums.

Generic Radar station to capture or destroy. Do not mind the Mechs, they are only there for scale. Have not finished painting them.

And hint for somethin unusual - add a photo to turn it into a roadside advertisement.

Nice work you guys. In both cases, the radar Station and solar array I find it's the flocking in the bases that just adds the real life aspect to seal the deal. And the little door on the bottom of the radar station just gives it the scale you need for something so unfamiliar.

this one slipped the net a few months ago when i was all excited about the gun platforms.

More 40K bits put to a good use on display here. My take on the ubiquitous all important tech building, the "shield generator" or "power transformer" or "maguffin distributor". Enjoy.

I've thought a lot about "loot" counter style objectives. To play a Salvage operation gone awry kind of story line.
I just don't have any scrap mech parts to use. My son likes kinder surprise eggs and they sometimes have transformer toys in them which I've been eyeing up with a view to doing something very similar to these. Just imagine Optimus Prime's head on a small base as a loot counter...in a battletech game. I have my reservations.
Your pieces here are really great. Really colourful too which I like as a lot of mine are just greys and dull tones. I can really imagine the moment that wolverine had its legs shot out from under it. It looks like it tried to drag itself on its fists into position for one last shot.
Nice idea for the Blakist tech bonus too. Making an objective feature playable in different creative ways is my kind of gaming.
Now where did I leave that matrix of Autobot leadership...?

Thanks guys. They're all the same pieces I've already uploaded pics of on the first page of this thread. Kret, I think the forest watchtower is about halfway down page one, pictured with a No-Dachi.

I just wanted to show them in a game context in case there was any doubt as to how they were used.
I actually only arrived at the end of the game after I finished work. I hadn't actually thought I'd be there so I didn't have my good camera with me. I'll remember it next time.

This is far from perfect.

The statue is Zvezda's 1/72 samurai and I would like to draw Your attention to the banner. It comes with each samurai Zvezda set, 2 sprues, 5 banners on each (mine are red and yellow plastic). Absolutely perfect for making banners for both mechs and streets.

Not exactly terrain pieces i'll admit but these two latest additions still count as objectives, and ones on a single hex base at that, so well within the scope of this thread at least.

So here we have a Rescue Helicopter and a Mobile Coolant Truck. Both vehicles could be mobile support non-combatants in games where the objective would be their defense or destruction.

I added the ejector seat pilot in the photo just for an idea of playable scenario use for the Rescue Helicopter. It's a fairly self explanatory concept for a game I hope. The identity of the VIP awaiting rescue and the particulars of the mission are up to you.

Scenarios for use with the Coolant Truck... either it could affect the heat levels of friendly mechs it is in contact with (based on whatever rules players agree on) or could just be a representative of the opposing force's logistical ability to continue it's advance in something like a desert campaign. Call it a fuel tanker for an armored division or a water carrier for infantry. Whatever is in that big old tank, you need it and your opponent wants it gone.

and yes folks, I've stooped to stealing my kid's toys and re-appropriating them as gaming pieces. "Sorry Son, your baby brother might choke on this aprox 6mm scale helicopter. So I'll just have to put it up here (on my painting bench) where he won't get it."  ;)

I am really liking the helicopter with the downed pilot. That would definite be a good piece to build a scenario around. Great job.

So here is something I set up-

Working on making a towed artillery or field gun piece- so its a WIP.

What did I use?  Pretty simple . . . one toothpick, cut off the points (which might become shells) though I used one end with a bit of thinning to fit the muzzle break detail.  The muzzle break is a hollow Q-Tip tube, wife complained about the type, dog found it and chewed up the ends . . . so I found it on the floor and clipped off the chewed on parts while I was cleaning up.  The mounting frame is a matchstick like bit of hobby wood you can get at WalMart, only used part of one so far for the mount & the block after the barrel portion.  The frag/blast shield was a bit clipped from gift card that I was using to make some hexes- decent plastic was all that was required and the Xacto knife to trim out the breech/block square portion.  I will angle more of that single bit of squared off balsa to finish making the frame.  Right now I am looking for some material, either some throw away item or perhaps some hobby bit to make the wheels which will not be functional.

This will eventually be set on a base with proper flocking and a paint job of olive green.

Long time no wonders.
Sorry, I've been away fighting the air war in WWII. A not entirely unproductive pursuit on the miniature hex objective front as its resulted in a bunch of little targets upon which to launch bombing raids.
That's why all these have little 1:300 scale aircraft flying over them but I could see them used in Battletech hex map games just the same.

First up we have a couple of airfields.

Next we have some Radar pylons. Proper legit target there.

Then there's a bridge. Everyone loves the old drop the bridge scenario.

And lastly I made a miniature factory. Four hexes of military target to launch your Mechs at! Or your planes, if you like.

Hope you like them. I hope to launch a mech or two at them some time in the future.
