A Falcon Fashionista question!
« on: 05 August 2017, 14:06:18 »
I've commissioned a friend and artist to draw a character in the Falcon's Dress uniform

http://cfw.sarna.net/wiki/images/9/91/Jade-falcon-dress-uniform-3054.png?timestamp=20120313095959

Which looks fine but there's something about the cape that just seems a bit off.  I brought this up with a friend of mine and he agreed there's something 'off' about the cape, and then he suggested "Why not have a Jasper cape?" and I had no idea what he was talking about.  Then he showed me this.

And that, as a cape works.  The Falcon's cape seems to come down from behind the shoulders or at least the nape of the neck, with no obvious clasp or fastening, not something that can be removed, but physically part of the uniform.

So instead of just copying the uniform verbatum (and ending out looking like something from Battle of the Planets, how about incorperating the 'jasper cape' and having it be an over the shoulders cape with the three falcon claw things atop that.

I think it would look a bit better stylisically and avoids just copying the original design.

Any thoughts?

The mighty Clans need no stravag clasps! The Great Father Kerensky provided us with advanced technology developed from the Star League, with wonders such as velcro, leaving the arms of a Jade Falcon warrior unhindered in delivering dismissive back-handed slaps to those who should know their place.

Anyways, the proposed change does add an air of villainy and mustache-twirliness to the look. If that's what you're going for, by all means develop the visuals to match the character concept. Having the character's appearance reflect their personality would be the goal were I the designer.

The image is of the dress uniform, is that actually what you're after?

My only other thought is that the cape is somehow connected to the collar. Other then that, it does appear to be an integral part of the outfit.

Which, by the way, I love. The Falcons have the best dress uniform.

Yes its the dress uniform, I derped and typed field, and then couldn't edit it due to the forums going bananananas.

Yeah, I was chatting with my artist friend and she said that it was probably attached to the collar somehow at the back of the yellow 'beak' with the claw strikes being shoulder clasps.  And we assume its detachable.

the change so its over the shoulders, as Jaded pointed out adds an air of villany as it just looks slightly more menacing and I think it would just look better to see the cape itself on the shoulders rather than basically held on below the shoulder-line.

Hate the helmet, love the rest of it. I actually like the cadet uniform better than the standard, personally, but that's just me.

I'd just echo the comments about the cape connecting to the collar 'beak' and perhaps the shoulder 'talons'.

I wouldn't change things, as it is a novel design and allows for some artistic freedom in how things are situated in the back. Bringing the cape over the shoulders gives it too much of a mustache-twirl feel to me.

Think using elements of the cadet field uniform (the uniform with a actual collar) actual makes more sense.

Always liked Warhawk PPCs take

Think the instant-cape in the artwork is just so the cap won't conceal the any on the details considering you wouldn't see the shoulders on a normal somewhat functional cap

I've asked my artist friend to try both looks and see what works, it will be easy to adjust from an over the shoulder one to a low shoulder cape.

I used to work at the Minnesota and KC Renaissance Festivals.  Might I suggest something that doesn't just attach at the collar, but lower down....on the chest, similar to the capes used by the Romans?

My first cape was attached at the collar/neck line and it always choked me, hehe.
