Looking to upgrade my PC - Suggestions?
« on: 11 December 2017, 16:40:47 »
So I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC: upgrading my graphics card for now. Anyone have any suggestions for me? (I know the Motherboard would handle up to 32 GB of RAM, but 8 seems fine for now.)

Current rig is an HP p6-2350:
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
MSI MS-7778 2AEO motherboard
AMD A8-5600K CPU
GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card.
8 GB of RAM
(I did upgrade the power supply when I put the 750 in, can't remember off the top of my head to what though.)

In the future I'd like to build a pure gaming rig, but right now I'd be content with pushing this machine as far as I can.

If you want to stay with Nvidia I would recommend a 10 series video card
1050 would be the current replacement for your 750
If the power supply can handle it  is would look into a 1060, or 1070 card
A 1050 is going to run around $120 at newegg currently
A 1060 starts at around 200 to 220
A 1070 can start at around 400
You also would see performance gains with 900 series cards but they are around 2 years old at this point

Thanks. Dug out the box it came in, the power supply is 500W, so should be good for what I'm looking for. The 1060 is probably at the upper end of what I'm willing to put into this machine. Is there much difference between the different manufacturers (Zotac, MSI, EVGA, etc.)?

My understanding is that there is some typically minor but sometimes significant differences
For example  Asus and msi tend to have reputations for having good to excellent quality
Evga is sometimes a few more features for around the same price and I have had good experiences with evga I really would have to look at some reviews of each product and make a informed decision.

What is the rating of your current PSU? This will influence the over all amount of power actually reaching your hardware. There's a few questions that need to be asked before any recommendations can be made:
1/ What's your budget?
2/ What are you looking to play?
3/ What sort of HDD are you using?
4/ What resolution and refresh is your monitor able to produce?

Performance wise, the two largest QoL improvements that can be made to any gaming machine are an SSD and the GPU. The SSD will reduce loading times significantly, the GPU will give you higher FPS and better graphical fidelity. SSDs are fairly cheap now, GPUs not so much, but a good one can be had on a budget.

500W.
1 - About $200
2 - Wolfenstein: The New Colossus/Dishonoured 2 without freezing up (even on low settings, my rig struggles with those two).
3 - A 1tb SATA drive (I think.) I've thought about that, but the loading times don't really bother me. I'll wait on that till I actually build a rig.
4 - Hooked up to a TV actually. With the HDMI connection it is 1360x768, 60hz. (If I use a VGA cable I can get a 1920x1080, but then can't stream Amazon. :/) The TV is a few years old, but serviceable.

Well, that was succinct, a budget of $200 isn't going to get you much, interesting that you can't get 1080 over HDMI, that's what they were made for. But I digress.

What sort of graphical options do you have turned on? Some of the graphical post processing can trash your FPS, but on the whole, the 1050 is probably the best bet if you want to stay with Nvidia architecture.

depending on what else is in the system, a 1050-1060 video card will likely make a huge difference.

heres one comparison  http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-750-Ti-vs-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti
heres a comparison of the 1060 vs 1050
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1050/3639vs3650

if you can swing it (and the power supply can feed it) the 1060 performs a lot better, but it is more expensive.
