Original Unseen Longbow
« on: 29 January 2013, 09:05:38 »
What product was this in?

I heard that it was in the original TRO: 3025 but I have looked at that book, and it is not in there.

So where did it come from?

Earliest book I have with Longbow stats in it is Sorenson's Sabres.

Good call, I was hunting all over for it and couldn't find it anywhere.

Sorenson's Sabres introduced the 'Mech, but I believe there was no associated image. The (unseen) image, together with the usual TRO fluff writeup, came in FASA's StarDate/StarDrive magazine which isn't considered canonical anymore. That particular writeup was translated and published in the German edition of the TRO3026, the Hardware-Handbuch 3031 along with the unseen image.
Later TROS(3055 and 3039) had a different image and new fluff.

You can also see a decent picture of the Unseen art in the Star League sourcebook.

There's a picture of one on P.48 of the original Mercenary's Handbook - but no stats.

What page please? I only have the PDF of the book sold by Catalyst, with the unseen removed.

As far as I know the only TRO that the Unseen Longbow featured in was the 1992, TRO3031 Hardware-Handbuch published by German-FanPro, which was a German printing of TRO3026 but with some of the soucebook mechs at the time, ie. Flea, Raven, Wolfhound, Cataphract, and Longbow.

But of course that is not canon and thus not an official TRO.

Basically the Longbow does not get an official TRO entry until the original TRO3058 and at that point the image was already given a make-over, which I actually prefer over the original unseen version.
I wouldn't mind seeing a miniture of the primitive Longbow from Primitives Vol. 3  O0

Very last page of the book, underneath the index entry for "Z".

Dumb question ( :D) but is the version shown in Sword and Dragon a reseen or unseen?

The 0W is the unseen. Since Sword and Dragon is about Sorenson's Sabres anyhow, only makes sense.

EDIT: The mini pictured however is not the OW, it's the 7Q

Hey quick question about something that's always bugged me: is it ØW (number) or OW (letter)?

It has changed back and forth over time, but it is now officially the zeroW.

The Longbow is the only reseen mech that got better after the facelift.

I love those things.  I had a lead mini back in the day and traded it for something stupid.  Ugh :(

I wouldn't say the only reseen that got better. The Marauder IIC I think looks better then the original for example. Still, the Longbow is a darn fine looking mech, and a great thing to have on the field in large engagements.

I don't know what the problem is.  I had no problems finding the original unseen longbowman.   ;D

I agree, I'm a fan of the Mad IIC, and the Griffin IIC reseens as well.

I think overall, they did a good job with the reseens, but I do prefer the unseen longbow.

Yeah, I've liked the strange shape of Marauder IIC too.

Sarna BTW is your friend:
Longbow (Bow)

Judging from the references section, stats were published in LosTech (p. 22), AToW (261), and somewhere in the Classic BattleTech RPG (aka MechWarrior 3rd Ed.).

Speaking as a grumpy old fart myself who has been playing since the 80s, I prefer a lot of the Reseen designs myself. And yes, the Marauder IIC is one of my favourites.

I like the 3058 appearance of the Longbow the best by far- the Unseen just seems... I don't know, boring.  And I don't like either of the Project Phoenix Longbows, either.  The first is too blocky, which is odd because I like other blocky mechs just fine, like the Fafnir and Highlander IIC.  The 3085 one, well, honestly I just didn't care too much for the appearance of most of the Phoenix stuff in 3085.

I dropped out of Battletech right after 3055 came out and I forgot about all the other unseens.  The Mad IIc is pretty sweet.
