Question about installing Mechs to IWM Hex Bases
« on: 15 February 2011, 13:24:19 »
Hey Guys,

So I'm working on my first CBT mini (a Centurion since it's only two pieces - crawl before I run right?) and I've got the arm on but now am about to attach it to the base.

The IWM Centurion already has sort of a base that it is attached to but very small. The IWM bases that I bought, with the mechs, are the hex bit but they have a recess in them.

My question is; just glue the base of the Centurion Legs into the Hex Base and apply terrain putty or something after?

Yep. I personally use spackle from Home Depot, though different people use different stuff.
I find the spackle to be ideal: dries fairly fast (1-2 hours), is hard enough to take some light modding on top of it (but isn't strong enough to support off-balance minis...for that, I use super sculpey), is easy to apply and isn't toxic, and if I mess up it isn't too hard to remove.

Where does one get the super stuff? My marauder and mad at will probably be dynamic poses and may require some oomph

Super Sculpey is a kind-of waxy clay found at craft stores. It never dries out like clay, but you have to bake it to make it harden. After that, it's like rubbery ceramic or brick and is stiff enough to support pinning.

I use Super Sculpy because it is easier to remove than spackle if you make a mistake.  It hardens nicely with a coat of super glue.  I will often build a base out of the "extra bits" to raise a mech's feet to the top of an IWM hex base, gluing them into the base and then posing the Mech on the buildup and then filling with SS to bring the whole of the base to level with the top of base.

I may end up getting both...

BUT... if you fix the mini to the hex with the SS in it then how are you baking it? These things can't take much more than 300-350 degrees before they go blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Super Sculpy bakes at 275 but there is an easier fix.  A coat of super glue over it hardens it enough to stay but its still pretty easy to remove should you wish to "re-purpose" the base.  You'll need to add glue to floc the base and this also creates another "crust" over the base.  Try going to any craft store to buy it and find the cheapest set of plastic clay tools too.  You don't need anything fancy to level off a base.

I bake the SS in the hexbase by itself. Sand it afterwards, then add the mini. Make sure to groove the inside of the base so the SS has something to grab onto. Otherwise, you could always re-glue the SS back into the base if it comes out.

They had it but it was just called sculpy. Small bricks? I also got spackle thanks for the tips.

Cyttorak, that Sculpy stuff is WICKED!!! 15 mins and boom it is pretty solid stuff. I can still score it etc. but it's pretty rock hard.

You can drill into this stuff with the pin vice and then crazy glue for pinning eh?

Yep. Sculpey is wonderful stuff. I have some of their bake and bend, which when you bake it still remains somewhat flexible. Great for makeing molds  for things that don't have to be perfect, and the regular stuff is great for makeing things, like custom bases, or shattered mech and vee parts to decorate a base with.

Yep, it's good stuff. Just drill a hole with the same diameter drill bit as the pin you'll be using, and superglue it in place.
For an extra-tight fit, I usually take the mini and (before pinning the foot) softly press it into the sculpey. The foot will fit nicely in the now-hard and baked depression.
