Silver pencils for chipped paint effects?
« on: 05 June 2012, 11:32:50 »
http://www.gruntz.biz/2012/03/weathering-with-artist-pencil.html

Has anyone given this a try?  Seems easy, quick, and consistent from what I've read elsewhere.

I've never tried Silver.  But I have used chalks and graphit in the past to "pencil" in effects.  I usually use paint for silver stuff.  But this looks like it will work just fine.  Give it a shot and report back. :)

This technique is very old. It has been used with great effect in plane modelism.

It is an old technique and one I don't use very often but on the edges of the tanks it worked well.  I also used it on the edges of these Hellhound models.

It is difficult to see unless you get up close but it did add detail with a quick use of the pencil.

I also used the silver artist pencil on the edge of the rust on these mecha models. On the big wolfhound style model you can see the fine edge along the hull which was the pencil rubbed a few times along the very edge.

That's some nice stuff there.  When I get the chance I'll give it a shot.

Unfortunately, finals are going to keep me busy.

So here are two pictures of my experimentation with silver pencils.  I also tried a new camo scheme based off of the wet environment Archer from the original CamoSpecs book.  Debating on how well that turned out, but the silver pencil chipping came out nicely.  It seems the trick is to be subtle with it.

I also noticed I didn't ink enough of the base for my tread marks, but I fixed that after I took the photos.

Rear view of the Demolisher.  I'll get some more images up later so you guys can see some of the other effects.

Nice work, I like the subtle chipping along the hull. I think it works really well on that model and I need to get my old Demolisher painted, it has been a long time in a draw!

Thanks, inrepose.  I'll make sure to use the pencil effects more as time goes on.  Weathering is tricky to get right as you don't want to do it too much, but you also need it noticeable.
