Needs a little CV-3 as well.

No doubt. The Oregon is an overcrowded mess. Crew must have been cramped in that ship.

During the night of May 31-June 1, 1917, as the battle of Jutland raged, the British 1st Cruiser Squadron was wiped out. The force commander took his four ships across the British battle line- blocking their view with coal smoke- to try to sink an already-crippled German light cruiser. They paid for this mistake heavily- flagship Defense was blown to pieces by a magazine explosion, Warrior was crippled and sank the next day, and the other two ships- Duke of Edinburgh and Black Prince- were driven away.

During the night, Black Prince finally caught up with the Grand Fleet's main battle group, and attempted to join formation... only to find that in the darkness, they had made a fatal mistake- what they had done was pulled up alongside Scheer's High Seas Fleet at jaw-droppingly short range. In this painting, the German dreadnought Thuringen has illuminated the hapless British cruiser, and is dumping her wing turrets at her. At least two other dreadnoughts did the same, and Black Prince was utterly ruined- she staggered away into the night ablaze and sank with all hands at some point before dawn.

This isn't an exaggeration. The range shown here is the real deal from German reports- guns that could (and had, earlier in the night!) reached miles to hit targets now were engaging at less than 500 yards, against a ship that couldn't hope to survive 11-inch shells in the best of times.

Hoorah! Hoorah! Hoorah!

Good things come in threes, so HMAS Melbourne (FFG05), HMAS Parramatta (FFH154) and HMAS Anzac (FFH150) from the HMAS Adelaide (L01).

Just happens that this is the third ship in Her Magesty's Royal Australian Navy to be named HMAS Adelaide, the third ship named HMAS Melbourne, and the third ship named HMAS Anzac.

Not strictly naval, but if anyone is ever in the Boston area.  Get a little ways out to the Essex shipbuilding museum.  A wooden shipyard that still works, and they let you walk around it! It's not very active, not a lot of call for new wooden hulls but is keeping the skills alive.

They offer classes on how to make small wooden day sailing boats, they were also restoring a original Essex Shipyard schooner, but its very slow going.  Its good place to go!

Here one of those survivors built by Essex Shipyard, the Adventure.  She still operates out of Gloucester, Massachusetts after being restored.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed on Monday the loss of a second fighter from the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov during operations off the coast of Syria.

The fighter, a Sukhoi Su-33 (reportedly, ‘88 Red’, upgraded with SVP-24 bombing computer), skidded off the deck during landing as the result of a defective arrester gear cable.

The pilot ejected safely and was rescued unharmed. According to the MoD, ‘Naval aviation sorties are continuing in accordance with their tasks.’

The Su-33 is the second aircraft that has been lost from the Admiral Kuznetsov during its ongoing mission in the Mediterranean. The previous loss on November 13 similarly involved a defective arrester cable. In that incident, a Mikoyan MiG-29 multi-role fighter ran out of fuel while unable to land on the carrier due to ongoing work to repair the cable.

I have spoken.

Is the Admiral Kuznetsov actively used support operations in Syria? Is this first time they've used their carrier for offensive like this?
