Overview:
As part of a program to develop the forces of AMC, President Avellar and Military Review Board initiated several programs to meet the requirements set forth by the President. Along with several Battlemech and Aerospace programs, a battle Armor program was instituted. Lacking the expertise needed for this new program, President Avellar got in touch with the ComStar Precentor on Alpheratz and asked if he could use his contacts within ComStar and see if the Star League would be able to lend them some assistance in this area. After six months of negotiations with SLDF and ComStar representatives an agreement was reached that would provide the Outworlds with necessary technological assistance in exchange for access to the design once research was completed.
Sarah Perkins, a former AFFS Captain and NAIS graduate and recent immigrant to the Alliance, who had worked on the Federated Commonwealth's early battle armor projects, was chosen to head the design team. At the insistence of the Alliance Military Review board, the suit had to be capable of flight, as it was the preferred mode of combat for their military. After six months and several failures, the design finally gave up on the flight capability and went ahead with a partial wing that, when deployed, would enhance the jumping ability of the suit.
It would be several more years, before the design team would be able to make the Kestrel as it was originally intended. The Mk 2 would become possible due to technical assistance from an unlikely source, a team from the snow Raven Clan. By 3070, the Kestrel Mk 2(or Osprey) would become the standard battle armor for the AMC, supplant the Mk 1.
The Kestrel Mk 1, as the production suit will be named, is armed with either a heavy machine gun or heavy grenade launcher as its main weapon on the right arm. On the left arm is weapon point that can carry a variety of infantry weapons. Another weapon is the mine dispenser, which is mount between the jump pack and the body of the suit. This mine dispenser can deploy up to ten mines of various types. The Kestrel Mk 2 is armed with either a Support Laser or Light Recoilless Rifle as its main weapon. It also comes equipped with a mine dispenser unit.
