Peterson Class Space Station Complex
« on: 07 June 2017, 21:40:29 »
Based on Marauder's new pic from PLOG, found here: http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=52472.msg1329344#msg1329344

I have built it as three stations with each station taking up an axis. The primary station, Peterson Y, uses two reinforced unpressurized repair bays to lock the other two stations in place, even while puttering around the system on it's station keeping drive.

One unique feature to this station complex is an internal tram station, using trans that move along the outside of the station to transfer cargo from one area to another swiftly, and even from one axis to another. With stations at each end of each axis, and also in the center of each axis, and lines on each side that travel in opposite directions, cargo and personnel can be moved around the complex swiftly. This is what the superheavy vehicle bays are, 2 trains per station of 5 cars, with each train having 3 "stations" consisting of 5 bays, one per car. There are rumors of some Peterson stations using these trains as additional point defense as well.

It has a lot of command and control facilities along with facilities for R&R, as this seems to be a major military hub to commanding, preparing for, and recovering from military operations. It has an ATAC capable of controlling a massive amount of SDS robots, and it has an SDS Jammer in case the enemy brings them. It uses small craft bays since they can house either small craft or fighters, and they come with a larger technical crew.

Officer and crew have standard quarters for their rankings. Bay personnel have additional facilities built up around their work areas, combined with the facilities in the bays themselves these tech crews have enough room to be comfortable, or take on many more additional techs as needed. There is a massive 28 deck rotating grav ring around the top of the station, near the majority of the docking. Able to house nearly three thousand passengers, from crew embarking or disembarking from and to missions. This station is able to act as a hub for armies. The housing facilities in these rings are somewhat modular, and can be replaced with more compact facilities up to doubling their capacity.

The Stations Armament is taken from the success of the McKenna Battleships, with bracketing bays of heavy naval PPCs for anti ship firepower, and bracketing Naval Lasers for Anti-Fighter duty. Backed up by arrays of AR-10 launchers that can work well against any target. The heavy armor protecting the station is intended to allow it to take a pounding from even the most determined foe, without falling, and anything short of massed nuclear attack is survivable.

Peterson X has many similarities and redundancies, like mobile HPG. At one end it houses internal facilities that can rebuild anything up to a McKenna battleship, in a pressurized environment. It can also house up to 12 smaller dropships internally (dropshuttle bays are being used here, since the station can't jump anyway, the restriction on what can dock in them is irrelevant to their purpose). Peterson X also includes four energy battery recharging stations, able to help ships quickly travel onward.

At the other end of Peterson X are facilities designed for the Station Complex's crew to enjoy, since this is a long term assignment, it was determined that these facilities were important. They also serve to house massive hydroponics facilities.

Continuing the redundant systems for command and control, and further increasing the number of SDS robots capable of being controlled bringing the total in the complex up to almost a thousand SDS units, the Peterson Z axis is geared more towards the technical aspects of this kind of hub. It has 6 unpressurized bays, two of which can accommodate battleships, and the other four able to handle JumpShips and DropShips. It also has another six internal bays able to house smaller dropships. A further 10 energy recharging stations round out the main differences in station Z.

awesome...bigger than anything I have ever considered. And holy crap; guns!
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

I just have one question: no AMS or other anti-missile point defense?

I thought about it, but I was modeling it's armament off of the McKenna, and it forsook any such defenses. In fact I can't recall any star league era warship (I haven't looked very hard at stations) with actual AMS on it. Since this is supposed to be a star league era station, I took my cues from that.

I figured that with the armor to actually take a peacemaker, and with it being a fleet hub and being unlikely to deal with anything alone, and with nearly 1000 SDS units, 324 fighters/small craft, and between bay doors and actual berths another ~300 dropships, it could possibly get by without AMS mounted on itself.

If this were being built in the dark ages it would definitely have been designed with an impressive AMS array, screen launchers, and because I'm a jerk, space mine launchers to make hostile boarding a bit harder.

If you were to modify one, AMS would actually be a very easy upgrade compared to some things, since AMS doesn't need any gunner or crew additions, and wouldn't affect fire control weight. You would only have to add the weight of the units and any ammo you wanted.

The game being about BattleMechs and all left us with a setting with canonical space cities but not very much attention given to them.

I love this kind of stuff.

Same WarShips, DropShips, Stations are great additions to the universe even if Mechs dominate

Such stations would be a great place in which to base an ATOW campaign if you want to get away from being dominated by Mechwarriors and BattleMechs.

It occurred to me that each of these axis could be build off a certain base version, with the each station set up custom for the place and unit that wants it, sort of like a Omni, but not as advanced. It's have a certain amount of pod space, but the setup would have to be set at time of manufacturing. Sort of like a few dropships known to be somewhat modular, or even the Aquila Primitive JumpShip, with many possible variants. With that in mind, I threw together the Peterson Blank, a version that has all of the components I consider part of the base design, and the cargo tonnage can be used to set any further facilities on the station.

Now a station can have up to Six naval repair facilities, one per facing. If you use a similar "lock" that the Peterson Y does, to hold the complex together, the maximum size of the complex would be seven Peterson Stations, with six connected through reinforced unpressurized repair bays to a central Peterson. Though who knows if the Star League ever built one at that full size.

It could get bigger if you can Mischa Doll more stations into the ones on the six auxiliary stations. In that case, each could lock in six more Peterson stations, and it could grow forever until eventually you basically have a celestial superstructure blotting out the sun.

One reason I would still consider point defense is that, unlike a WarShip, a station has an SI of 1. Any nuke that crits, even an Alamo, will one-off kill it. That would be bad, and is undoubtedly why the M-9 Pavise carried 72 SPL.  Heck, even the Snowden and Olympus both carry small lasers for point defense.

Actually thats a good point, so perhaps like 3 AMS per section per station. That way its not an insurmountable wall to overcome but a good deterrent against missiles?

Awesome :) The only other thing that it could be missing is some Marines.  But thats about it, otherwise, perfection  And I like the idea that they could just put more and more of them together.  We know the SL had some truely huge facilities, Gabriel and Camelot Command for example were bigger than Ben Hurr.

I completely forgot about marines. They are added now, I did the 100 of the four man Battle Armor bays for NightHawk suits, and then I did 8 steerage quarters per bay, 4 for the marines themselves, and another 4 for tech crew for them.
