Combined Arms Overlord

I have an Overlord that I would like to customize.  Basically I have a combined arms battalion.

I am trying to customize it so that it can carry 16 mechs, 16 vehicles (light to heavy) and 4 platoons of infantry and possibly some extra cargo if there is room.

This is what I have thus far.  What cargo capacity can I give it while still being within the rules?

Thanks Iron Grenadier.  I am trying to figure out what can be this thing's maximum cargo for the cargo bays.

HVbay=150t
Infbay=depends on inf

taking out 20 mech bays gets you 4000tons
putting in 12 heavy v bays is 1800tons
depending on infantry bay size, 2200tons minus inf bay size is cargo allotment

Unless you are specifically adding mass for extra things these sizes are wrong.

Mech Bays are 150 tons; Heavy Vehicle Bays are 100 tons.  The infantry part is correct.

That still leaves you 1800 tons minus infantry bay size for cargo.

Much appreciated Vition2.  I just want to know how many more cargo bays I can add with the current configuration that I have posted above.  I have changed swapped some of the mech bays for heavy vehicle and infantry bays?

I'm away from my books at the moment, so when I get home I can answer this with more certainty.  But spit-balling, you have roughly 1700-1800 tons left, this could pretty easily get you another lance of BattleMechs (600 tons), and two more lances of heavy vehicles (800 tons) with a fair bit left over for other stuff - perhaps another air lance or more infantry.

For the file you started with, just change the cargo tonnage to whatever you end up using.  You dont have to make it multiple cargo bays.  MegaMek wont care as long as the math is correct. Fluff wise, its entirely up to you.

My advice would be to add a couple of small craft bays to transport troops for boarding actions.

Removed 20 Mech Bays = 3000 Tons
Add 16 Vehicle Bays (12 Heavy, 4 Light) = 1400 Tons
Add 4 Foot Infantry Platoon Bays  = 20 Tons

Remaining Tonnage for Cargo = 1580 Tons

Okay so if the Overlord can hold 5000 Tons total.  I would like 16 Mech Bays, 4 ASF Bays, 12 HV Bays and 4 foot infantry bays.

MB and ASF: 20X150T= 3,000 tons
HV Bays: 12X100T=1,200 tons
Foot Infantry 4X5T= 20T
Total= 4220 Tons

5,000 Tons- 4,220 Tons= 780 Tons for cargo.

If each cargo bay weights 10 Tons then that would give me 78 cargo bays. 

So my txt. file should look like this correct?

Okay so if the Overlord can hold 5000 Tons total.  I would like 16 Mech Bays, 4 ASF Bays, 12 HV Bays and 4 foot infantry bays.

The typical Overlord has 6,300 tons devoted to "cubicles"  (36 Mech + 6 ASF) x 150 Tons Each = 6,300

I would suggest the following load out to give you what you want but also leave room to expand & keep the modification semi-standard

Keep 24 Mechs + 6 ASF
Remove 12 Mech Bays  (1800)
Add 12 Heavy Vees + 4 Light Vees + 4 Foot Platoons = 1200 + 200 + 20? = 1420?
Remaining 380? goes to increasing cargo tonnage.

There are canon Overlords that remove 12 Mechs for 12 Heavy Vehicle Bays + 600 Tons Cargo.

So this just takes that a bit further & swaps in some extra Light Vees & Infantry where some of the Cargo is.

Either way 24 Mechs & 6 ASF are standard size formations so I'd leave at least that much there to "grow"

In the short term the extra 10 bays can hold 1000 extra tons of cargo

First thought, a more compact way of displaying the design would be handy.

As for the design itself, it's got all the usual top-level stats you could ask for - a very good combat load, respectable firepower, and good armour. I worry about the soft stats, though. Six lifeboats for a crew of over a hundred? You want at least enough for each person, probably with spares - it's a combat ship, after all. 78 tons of cargo for a ship that big is also worrying - you'll go through 78 tons of basic food and such just getting to and from a drop point, never mind ammo or spares for your units. If it's a model designed purely for hot combat drops, that could maybe be okay, because you're assuming that follow-on dropships will carry all other supplies, but in that case you want a lot more armour aft - it's a spheroid, all ground fire in a landing situation will hit it aft.

I'd probably cut the mechs down to a company, instead of a reinforced company, and put the difference into non-combat carrying capacity. I'd also give some thought to what role this is intended to play, if any, and whether that'll affect any of your choices.

If you dropped 20 Mechs that is 3K.
I see less than half of that accounted for in Vehicles, Infantry, Cargo.  (1330ish)


As I said above, you only need to drop a dozen mech bays to fit your vehicle/infantry needs & it still gives you extra for cargo.
Dropping 8 extra means the space can't be mechs in the future. 
You can always stuff 100 tons of cargo in a mech bay for 800 more Cargo space if you are only running 16 mechs.
Stripping them out the extra 8 should give you 1200 Cargo but I'm not seeing that in your total cargo.

Do you mean over strength company or Assault Mech sized mechs?

24 Cubicles is enough for 2400 tons of cargo.

So whatever you don't use in actual mechs space would be your remaining cargo space.

This ship is supposed to be a combined arms raider and has a Fortess class wingman.

I think that's actually pretty close to the 3082 Assault Triumph. Biggest difference is it carries battle armor and not regular infantry. I think it had around 500 tons of cargo capacity.

Another option might be the Elephant class, which I think comes close to what you are asking for. Think it had 2000 tons of cargo capacity, but only room for 4 ASF's. (Or what it small craft bays?)

2400 minus whatever the infantry weighs since its going to vary based on type.

The same # of lifeboats as the standard Overlord has, as I'm not sure Lifeboats is as easy to move around as cargo.   I feel like the escape pod chutes or closer to structure/armor than the internal mech bays are.

I think he has 780 tons of cargo not 78

the confusion is that he is assuming that cargo bays weigh 10 tons ea, they don't they are a "leftover" mass as 1 lump sum

so using the example:
16 mech bays @ 150 tons ea, 2400 tons, 3 doors
6 aerospace fighters @ 150 tons ea 900 tons 2 doors
12 heavy vech bays @100 tons  1200 tons 1 door
4 infantry bays @ varies

I think he has 780 tons of cargo not 78

the confusion is that he is assuming that cargo bays weigh 10 tons ea, they don't they are a "leftover" mass as 1 lump sum

so using the example:
16 mech bays @ 150 tons ea, 2400 tons, 3 doors
6 aerospace fighters @ 150 tons ea 900 tons 2 doors
12 heavy vech bays @100 tons  1200 tons 1 door
4 infantry bays @ varies
cargo 1 bay @ 780 tons 1 door

note I am not saying that cargo weight is actually right but..

looking at an approximation from a stock overlord, with:
16 mech bays @ 150 tons ea, 2400 tons, 3 doors
6 aerospace fighters @ 150 tons ea 900 tons 2 doors
12 heavy vech bays @100 tons  1200 tons 1 door

there is ~1800 tons remaining, if my math is right.  now the thing to remember is you can cram just about anything into cargo as long as it fits, the big drawback is loading and unloading time with that said I would likely use multi purpose doors if allowed to, IE standard overlord = 2 fighter doors, and 6 mech doors
so have this thing 2 fighter doors 6 mech drop capable doors, note vehicles and cargo also use the mech doors for entrance and exiting the dropship

If I were to switch a second bay door to cargo should it be a mech bay door?

Why?

Cargo means Level 1 door by 20+ meters wide, while a Mech uses a Level 2 door by 20+ meter wide...

Keep the mech door and use a mechs with hands to move the cargo!

Agreed,  the 6 Mech bay doors are all usable by Vehicles & Infantry.
