Thor Ragnarok - No Spoilers
« on: 28 October 2017, 06:18:10 »
Well I went to see Thor Ragnarok at the weekend.

It is a bloody superb movie, its got a lot of humor in it (although perhaps they do overplay it a bit too much at times), the action is very good, the story, whilst simple was well done. And oh lord the sound track! "Yeah this is typical Marvel faire..." *SUDDENLY SYNTHWAVE* Its got the usual Marvel polish and attention to detail but they were clearly going for a somewhat campy, tongue in cheek action/road trip movie. The side characters are brilliant, Loki is superbly trollish and we get a nice cameo from another Marvel hero too.
With Mr Goldblum I think they just said "be the meme yourself" for his acting and Cate Blanchette clearly had a lot of fun being a somewhat hammy villain. There's lot of 'dawww...' moments too and the fight between Thor and Hulk is superbly done as are the scenes with big green.

If you do go and see it, see if you can spot 3 very famous actors doing lil bit parts that will make you giggle when you spot them.

If I was forced to give this a rating out of say 10, i'd say its a good solid 8. Its up there with the other very good Marvels like Winter Soldier or Guardians and Iron Man 1 as the ones that stand head and shoulders above the others. Not that the other movies are bad, but these ones, including Ragnarok are damn good.

Oh and there are 2 post credit scenes, one at the end of the initial title scrawl, one at the very end.

And whilst its not from the OST (which I will be getting when its out) here have some celabratry synthwave!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gklcix_pvMo

(what is it with this big 80's Operation REVIVAL thing going on at the moment, seeing a lot of 80's nostalgia on TV, Stranger Things, and in adverts like the He-man/Skeletor one and movies with things like Guardians soundtrack and the extensive use of Synthwave in Ragnarok).

Really loved it. It had a real 80s, real Flash Gordon vibe to it that had my wife and I laughing the whole time.

Just watched it (in 2D), it is a very fun movie. The theater was completely full and everyone was fully engaged.

Mostly because it maintained the reference on multiple levels (including the scary parts) for almost a full minute. Also for poking at the parent company.

Couldn't stand this movie. The Planet Hulk portion was appropriate and VERY entertaining. But it felt like it was stapled onto an original, pre-existing script for Ragnarok. It didn't work, IMO. It would have been better if the Thor portion was played absolutely straight, with about 75% less jokes, and kept most of the humor with Goldblum and the Hulk. The Valkyrie was an absolutely worthless character, which substituted the Hulk's love story arc in the comic. She even wore the same costume as Caiera (http://art.cafimg.com/images/Category_109423/subcat_171277/ITbgYT47_0208160146411gpadd.jpg).

I believe this originally started as a pure Thor movie and a pure Planet Hulk film. But (most likely) they thought the latter wouldn't be a big draw at the theater, so they put the two into a blender and out came Frankenscript's monster.

Well,  I do disagree (maybe dial the silliness back a bit, but I prefer this to Thor movies taking themselves so seriously), but to address your point about Planet Hulk and Hulk character development, Universal owns distribution rights to any standalone Hulk movie and is uninterested in selling that to Disney. Tying in Hulk's character changes to adjacent movies allows them to get around that. Most of the information about pre and post Disney deals is public, but Ruffalo reiterated the situation when talking about his character.

I believe I read somewhere that this and a couple other upcoming Marvel movies contain a stand-alone Hulk movie. It's just split up a bit out of necessity.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.  While it does seem to have been two movies squished into one, it doesn't stray too far from the tried and true marvel shtick.

Although the synthetic music choice and vibe for the movie is a rather interesting choice.

Ah-ah, ah!
Ah-ah, ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow
The hammer of the gods
W'ell drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde, and sing and cry
Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah-ah, ah!
Ah-ah, ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
How soft your fields so green
Can whisper tales of gore
Of how we calmed the tides of war
We are your overlords

On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing

No kidding? I rather thought Jeff Goldblum out-Goldblumed the movie with his scenery chewing.

one ongoing joke went right over my head till I realized the movie was made not for Aussie & Kiwi audiences, then I laughed my ass off.

I missed it at first because I've worked with Kiwi's just like Korg (only less rocky, just as hard just less rocky), even many of the lines where the same as talk on the work sight or in the brake room.

Not only was that Matt Damon, the other two actors in that scene were Sam Neil and Luke Hemsworth.  They were actually contenders to play Loki, Odin, and Thor, respectively.

Actually Waititi himself plays Korg, and he made a point to match him to local bouncers he's met.  A lot of local indigenous peoples were hired for the film as well.  What was the joke?
