Question came up in our game recently. Does a 'Mech with an unconscious pilot actually get to roll to avoid shutdown or is it automatic? My friend seems to think that perhaps it is automatic as the pilot is unable to actively attempt to override the shutdown - as that is what rolling to avoid shutdown is described as. My thought is if we can't find a rule that states that, then Rules Overrides Fluff in this case.

An unconscious pilot would not be able to avoid a shutdown roll,  the same way an unconscious pilot would not be able to make a PSR.  The shutdown roll would be an auto-fail, just as a PSR for an unconscious pilot is an auto-fall.
