More custom 6/10mm buildings
« on: 08 June 2015, 19:59:43 »
After the last batch, I decided to try my hand at more uniform buildings but a bigger batch.  Very similar to last time but simpler and with a bit more standardization of bits.  I tried to be a bit more picky in which textured tape cases I used for which buildings and floors.

Here is a scale shot
6mm Battletech mech on left, 10mm Power armored Infantry in front, 10mm Mechwarrior mech on right

Each floor is 17mm tall

Great idea using tape cases, light weight and sturdy.  Looks good.

This is an ingenious move.  The VHS cases work wonderfully.  I wonder what kinds of buildings you could get with cassette cases and 8-track cases.  It'd give you a pretty wide variety of "standardized" buildings.  Hmmm . . . maybe even a skyscraper made out of plain CD cases . . . they're nice and square.

Thanks folks,

These are made from audio cassette tape cases.  VHS cases would work too, but they might take up a bit too much space for a battletech game.   I also used a fair number of parts from cassettes themselves.  You'll see many of the small pulleys used as rooftop exhaust fans and many of the doors are the little metal plate that rests under the tape head.

I imagine you can your hands on old audio cassette tapes very easily/cheaply from yard sales etc.

Sounds like something I will have to try : cheers and good work O0

Yeah, now I have to dig into my parent's storage for their audio cassette cases.  Old VHS would work for L1 warehouses, of course 2 would make a L2 . . .

Now I really need to poke around their storage for all the stuff that was kept but they did not want to move to another state.  After four years of them swearing to sort it to clear it out, I imagine anything I want I can take . . .

Does anyone fill buildings in with that insulating foam to give things some rigidity.

Be sure to check out second hand stores, especially chain store.  Up here in Canada we have Value Village, and you can get cassette tapes with cases for less than a dollar each.

If you find a second hand place that sells them, perhaps you could ask if they ever get just empty cases that you could buy.
