Columbia-class Battleship (Repost + upgrade)
« on: 11 February 2016, 14:40:27 »
This was the original ship the old thread was 5 years old so I didn't feel right posting this there.

This is the original thread along with some pretty nice minis:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
A carrier/battleship hybrid, the Federated Suns Columbia class Battleship
was the pride and joy of the AFFS Navy, a shining beacon that acted as a
centre point for their Battle Fleets.

==Capabilities:==
With a tern of speed that would put a modern Destroyer to shame, the
Columbia class was a race-horse, designed to escort DropShips in-system during
planetary invasions and obliterate any picket ships and orbital defences.
Despite its size, the Columbia class relied on its complement of Aerospace
Fighters for its offensive punch, its armament being relatively light, and
geared more towards defensive capabilities.
This said, the Columbia was capable of going toe-to-toe with any ship
that made the mistake of thinking it was an easy kill: multiple Tronel-55
Series Naval Lasers spaced out in double-turrets around the hull provided the
bulk of the firepower, while a concentration of four Sunspot-3L Naval Particle
Projection Cannon in the nose provided a head-on punch that could inflict
damage on most Warships.
Rounding off the armament, and providing an extreme-range punch, the
Columbia was equipped with twelve Killer Whale Missile Tubes in the
for-section, allowing it to target multiple hostile Warships at one time.

==Battle History:==
Battle of New Avalon (First Succession War)
When a large DCMS force made a push towards New Avalon in the early years
of the First Succession War, three entire Battle Fleets were called in to
bolster the standing guard-fleet. These were lead by the Battleships Columbia,
Acropolis and Atlantia.
The fierce fighting that followed claimed all three Battleships the
Acropolis and Atlantia were destroyed outright, while the Columbia was so
badly damaged it had to be towed out of orbit and scrapped for much-needed
parts.
Despite this, the attack was pushed back, but at the cost of the New
Avalon Shipyards, the birthplace of the Columbia class Battleship.

==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
Armed Forces of the Federated Suns:
FSS Columbia (Lost, First Succession War)
FSS Acropolis (Lost, First Succession War)
FSS Atlantia (Lost, First Succession War)
FSS Pacifica (Lost, Second Succession War)
FSS Pegasus (fate unknown)
FSS Rycon (fate unknown)
FSS Triton (Lost, Second Succession War)

==Deployment==
Officially, three Columbia class Battleships, the Columbia, Acropolis and
Atlantia) were lost during the long and bloody First Succession War. The
Pacifica and Triton were lost early in the Second Succession War, having never
been fully repaired following battle during the previous war.
It is at this point that the facts become a little hazy: two Battleships,
the Pegasus and Rycon, remain unaccounted for.
Official AFFS Admiralty records show them as lost in action, but no
additional information is given. This leads some conspiracy theorist to
believe that the two Battleships were mothballed at some hidden location when
the knowledge needed to keep them operational was lost during the Succession
Wars.
Where they could have been hidden remains a hotly contested topic; all
known shipyards capable of handling the task were destroyed or damaged during
countless raids and assaults. This leaves secret naval stations hidden in
uninhabited systems and above worlds rendered uninhabitable during the dark
days of the early Succession Wars.
The truth may never be known, but there have been unconfirmed reports of
at least one ship matching the outline of a Columbia class Battleship seen in
the livery of the AFFS Navy making its way across the Federated Commonwealth
shortly before the start of the Davion Civil War.
Whether or not this is truly one of the missing Battleships remains to be
see.

And this is the reason for the repost my thanks to JA Baker for the original design and letting me use it in my AU.

A recent modification I've made to this design from Starbug/JA Baker mods done by hand so hopefully I got it right - the AR-15 are custom tech from the AU.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview

The Columbia-class is a relic of the Star League-era with only a single
vessel of the class the FSS Pegasus surviving to the present day.  The Pegasus
survived the Succession Wars hidden at the Hadrian's Command Anchorage first
returning to the limelight when it assisted First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion
in retaking New Avalon during the Varnay Crisis.

The ship was significantly damaged in 3091 fighting the Draconis Combine
in Matsuida system it was escorted by AFFS Naval units to the Federated-Boeing
yard in the Galax system where it began an extensive refit.

Capabilities

The mainly massive Rolls Royce Kraken engines have been retained and
completely refurbished.  Originally the plan was for the class to be refitted
with a Lithium Fusion Battery Mk II but the size of the technology was too
great for the refit.  The ship's coolant systems have been extensively
refitted as has the ship's armour belt being replaced with Lamellor Ferro
Carbide Armour providing a thicker and lighter armour covering.

The Pegasus primary energy armament has largely been retained with the
forward Heavy Naval Particle Cannons retained, four additional Heavy Particle
Cannons have been added to the fore arcs with the Naval lasers that had been
mounted there removed.  The Killer Whale Capital Missile Launchers have been
completely stripped and replaced with an equal amount of Kraken Tele operated
Capital Missiles these weapons make for a ferosome punch capable of splitting
Assault DropShips in half in a single volley and threatening any enemy
WarShip.  Backing up these Krakens are an array of AR-15 Sub-Capital Missile
Launchers for fighter and DropShip defence added to the missiles are an array
of Naval Lasers which can be used to engage WarShips, DropShips and aerospace
fighters.  For defence the ship is equipped with an array of thirty Laser
Anti-Missile Systems and four Screen Launchers.

The refit of the Columbia hull adds eight additional fighters bringing
the total fighters embarked on board to eighty aerospace fighters, eight
small craft and four DropShips.

Deployment

The only remaining Columbia-class vessel is the FSS Pegasus.  Following
its refit the ship was deployed to the Draconis March to blunt a new Draconis
Combine offensive and in the crew's mind to right some of the wrongs that had
been encurred on the craft from its last encounter with the DCMS.

Some naval intelligence analysts question why the Federated Suns has spent
so much additional resources on the Pegasus with many new hulls to choose from
it would have been easier to retire the old Columbia-class vessel.  The
analysts also question if the AFFS needs another carrier type vessel with the
successor-class to the Columbia, the Mercury, now being produced for the AFFS.
Some have wondered if the refit to the FSS Pegasus could be the first in a new
type of AFFS Carrier craft replacing additional First Prince and Mercury type
vessels.  Other question if the Federated Suns aerospace fighter producing
capacity can keep up with the number of naval vessels in service with the AFFS.

The biggest issue with this ship is how much you give up for the 5/8 speed. At 1.5 million tons it has a flight group roughly equal to a Samarkand class carrier, while it's weaponry is inferior to that of an avatar. It does have very good armor, but that's counter balanced by the fact that wehn operating at it's highest possible thrust, it will outpace most escort craft.

I created the Columbia class as a blockade runner capable of so-called "boom & zoom" attacks. It would jump into a system, normally by a pirate point, make a high-speed run on its target then get the hell out of dodge before the enemy can react. She can out-gun anything she can't out-run, but was never intended to go toe-to-toe with anything even remotely in its own weight range. Instead it runs down and destrories anything in the cruiser or below range, is, the kind of ships often assigned to system picket duties.

She has a spiritual sister in the Federation class Battle Cruiser, which you can find by following the Tartarus Station link in my sig

What do you think of the Mod JA?

Korzon - I agree she wouldn't stand up in a fight with another battleship instead I've used her for strikes like JA Baker described or hunting down an enemy force invading a system disrupting their attack.

Personally I'd drop the DropShips (probably Pocket WarShips) when I jump in have them hold the jump point while the Columbia goes does its thing.  If the Pockets get attacked and overrun then they fall back and wait for the Columbia to catch up.

I think it's supposed to be Tele-operated.

I know, but after the bit in his prose work about Rabid Foxes observing a public gathering through a microscope...
