Here's my feeble attempt to improve the Battle Hawk. Not the best of solutions maybe, but it's a tough design to fix.

I really don't like losing the two jump jets.  I'd prefer dropping the AMS to get back up to 5 jump capacity and maybe add a little something extra after that.

I honestly can't find much improvement in this redesign. What's its role? Average speed, stealth armor and short-range weapons - lacking the pulse bonus of the original it doesn't even do a good job at escorting stealth snipers.

But then I find the original quite workable. You just have to remember its role is escorting your fire support, a job it does quite well.

NOT to my liking or preferences either.

I played with the design quite a bit, but couldn't really find a decent way to make it work any better. This version was the least bad of the various efforts to improve on it. Without using an extra-light engine, which makes it less survivable, there's just too little you can do with it.

LOL - Oh well  ;)

I added them just for the combination of a little more range and hitting power. More effective than an LRM-5, but maybe less so than a Streak SRM-6.

How about this? LFE and CASE for survivability, TC for halfway-to-pulse accuracy, MMLs for flexibility.

The XL gyro isn't ideal, but a light mech is usually not far from dying anyway when it starts to take CT crits.

While they both retain the issue of being a slow light mech, I do like the BH-K401 version!

The BH-K321 doesn't seem, IMHO, to have enough going for it to make the TC a viable design. The BH-K401 seems like it has more versatility and can make better use of the TC.

Not bad, swapping out lasers for the missiles.

Still tends to be a slow moving target compared to other lights though. But not bad. ;)

Yeah, you have to play smart.  Couple little slips and your dead.  :)
On the upside retaining the pulse lasers gives you a chance at hitting them back.

While 5/8/5 is slow for a 30-ton mech you have to consider how you use it. If you send it off alone (or with faster units) to close assault the enemy you're liable to end up with a wrecked BHK.

But if you place it alongside 4/6 or 3/5 heavies and assaults and use it to block enemy close assaults the speed isn't a problem. Not only do the slower mechs present mech better targets, you don't have much space to actually move around in the first place!

Overview:
The Desert Fox was designed in the early 3060's when the AFFC high command sent
out a request for a cheap, well protected light omni capable of any kind of
mission. A NAIS design team finally aquired plans for the Arctic Fox omni from
a deal with clan Wolf-in-exile. Removing the XL engine and adding
Ferro-Fiberous armor dropped the cost by almost half of the original while
reducing vulnerability. The only problem was the limited space left in the
chassis for equipment mounts - several prototypes were produced before the top
brass were pleased.


Capabilities:
The DF-2 is a copy of the WiE AF-1, which in turn is a copy of the clan Kit
Fox. As such it shares many features of those mechs, such as primarly
arm-mounted weapons, top speed (97 kph) and general chassis design. The DF-2 is
a much simpler design however, as it lacks the expensive XL engine.

With 11 tons of pod space the DF-2 is unable to carry paired heavy weapons,
instead it is designed to carry a single large weapon in its right arm with
secondary weapons in its left arm and torso. There is space for mounting jump
jets, but not enough for a full 180 meter jump capability - 150 meters were
deemed sufficient by the designers.

The most talked-about feature of the design isn't a part of the mech at all,
however. Realizing that most units would have a short supply of weapons
designed to fit into an omni the design team came up with the "Universal
Adaptor Sleeve" - a set of fittings and connectors that can be attached to most
common IS weapons (and several clan weapons as well) allowing them to be
mounted on the DF-2. The UAS:s are cheap and light so that units can carry a
lot of them, allowing a configuration flexibility that beats even the clans by
a wide margin.


Deployment:
Desert Foxes were just entering production at the start of the FedCom civil
war. The produced units ended up on both sides were they recieved a mixed
reputation - pilots and techs liked them for their ruggedness and ease of
modification, higher officers only saw the loss rates when desperate company
and lance commanders outfitted the DF-1's with heavy weapon batteries and sent
them out as replacements for destroyed medium and sometimes even heavy mechs!

After the civil war ended DF-1's has been spread over the entire FC, thought
they are more common in the Federated Suns half.

Overview:
The BH-W505 Battle Hawk was put into production on Hesperus II by the Word of
Blake in 3070.  The design was intended as a relatively inexpensive, easy to
produce and easy to pilot battlemech for the Protectorate Militia forces.  The
BH-W505 utilizes the same Maltex 40 standard chassis, Paulina Ferro-Fibrous
armor and TharHes targeting and communications systems as the original Battle
Hawk, but trades out the expensive extra light fusion engine for a standard
model.  The increased mass of the power plant necessitated the removal of the
heavy pulse lasers, and WoB engineers replaced them with ER lasers easily
acquired from the FWL. 

During the design process it was decided to include a pair of MagShot Gauss
rifles in place of the Streak SRMs.  The MagShots and ER medium lasers are tied
in to an advanced targeting computer slaved to the Battle Hawks original
Ares-5B system (both the MSGRs and TC are technology salvaged during the seige
of New Avalon and exported to Hesperus II).  The security of the dependable
McArthur anti-missile system is retained.  Finally, an extended range flamer
(also imported from the FS) was included to improve the Battle Hawk's
performance against conventional units. 

At least a level III of these Battle Hawks were shipped to the Protectorate
prior to the liberation of Hesperus II.  Since then, the LAAF has gladly
continued manufacturing the easy to produce mech to replace battlefield losses
and has pledged 1/4th of the production output to support Devlin Stone's
coalition in thanks for their role in liberating the crown jewel of the Lyran
military/industrial complex.

Yup.  There's basically no point in doing so since they're just the equivalent of an SRM 1 that trades the ability to use specialty ammo for immunity from AMS.
