Baby Boomer Missile Sub
« on: 04 March 2016, 07:29:16 »
The Baby Boomer is part of the Imagineers diversification paradigm.  While the Marlin's provide the underwater defense the Baby Boomers provide the close surface and air net, with air defence and surface seeking arrow missiles packing a punch at anything that comes close.  These BB's also provide over the horizon fire support to the other craft that make up the imagineer battlegroup.

2 ERMLs give the BB's a little protection up close both on the surface and when submerged as well as allowing it to slowly dismantle surface threats that are unequipped to deal with a submersible.

I'm not sold on the ERMLs as its sole non-artillery protection; If this sub gets within shooting range of surface units, something has gone very, very wrong.

The biggest threat to this sub is dedicated sub hunters, and the LRT is the king of the open water battlefield, offering unparalleled range and stand-off distance from non-LRT equipped units.

It's very much designed to be part of a battlegroup - the baby boomer is part of an inner ring around a cruiser offering additional anti air and artillery support - if they're threatened they can submerge or dock into the cruiser for protection.  But things getting close to the BB should be a rarity and should already be beleagered.

Currently the rings are looking like (and this could change as I haven't got a completed Imagineer design yet)
Outer - Air assets - conventional/ASF
Mid - Combat assets - Marlin submersibles, attack VTOLs, WIGE tanks, Cutter Hydrofoils
Inner - Support/Artillery assets - Baby Boomers, Guppy industrial Mechs, Defensive BA
Centre - Imagineer command cruiser

Much like Archers and Longbows on land the BB should not be engaging up close, but sometimes it happens and having a short range weapon that can engage submerged, surface, ground and aeriel targets at mid range that requires no ammunition and only weighs 2 tons?  Combat submersibles should be engaged by other assets - like the Marlin, the Cutter and any aircraft carrying torpedo bombs, but 2 tons for basic defensive weapons doesn't seem excessive to me.

Thing is, that even as part of a task group, it can still be threatened by smaller, faster subs which can chase it underwater and engage it from beyond the ERML's maximum range.

I'm of mixed feelings about the armament.

CON:  If you're going to do an oceanic task force member, then do a much bigger sub lobbing Cruise Missiles (and probably Capital missiles, for surface to orbit fire)

PRO: if you're going to do an Arrow IV sub, then by all means keep it small so as to travel far inland via rivers.  You won't need a ton of firepower to protect oneself as a brown water submersible... just submerge and 99% of the threats nearby are completely unable to hurt you.  Even those lasers are probably a waste of tonnage in this niche- use friendly ground forces to blow up hostile torpedo boats.

Another pro is that it can be carried in a small vee bay of any unit capable of landing on water.

Conversely, it could be loaded onto a <100T amphibious carrier with a 50-ton cargo capacity, so that they can be loaded as a single unit in a heavy vee bay.

So - to my mind, my prime goal was to improve a cruisers air defence - not only this but if the cruiser was submerged a combat sub could surface and fire on targets, especially air targets, without risking or even revealing the presence of the parent ship.  The A4 launcher seemed like a great choice as it offered great range, could fit on a light vee and offered artillery support too - again, allowing artillery support without revealing the parent craft - or any large naval target.  So, the sub was conceived to be able to appear, blow things up a long way away and disappear off into the depths.  The speed is bad, the defensive weapons are bad - there's not a lot of weight left after an A4 and armour - but it fulfils that primary role and other units can cover for the other weaknesses.  Serious anti air can be done by fighters from the heli pad or sub caps off the cruiser but a few missiles without bringing the cruiser into view is the main point

Fitting a light vehicle bay would be a big plus, the planned cruiser isn't statted yet but primarily supports light vehicles - I'm going to have a play around and see if a heavy sub might give better performance (still 1 A4 but also some LRT and maybe some more speed) - however, I really like the idea from Fireangel of loading it into a heavy vehicle - suddenly I want to build a heavy WIGE (flotation hull as standard) with a light vee bay.  As part of the cruisers vehicle compliment this would be able to "hurry up" any of the light vee, carry them across impassable terrain, make quick visits to resupply depots etc.

I posted a design for a cheap, nasty attack sub I cooked up back in the pre-BMR era; it is things like these that can cause some serious problems for a sub that simply can't return fire.

Hmm, I appreciate the threat - to my mind the Marlin's, Cutters and Torpedo Bombers had been sufficient to keep away enemy subs but I guess torpedo defences might be more useful then the lasers - so I present the FA variant - stripping out the ERML, switching to a Fuel Cell and dropping a little armour gives the BBFA 2 LRT 5's and 1 ton of ammo while keeping the A4.
