Smasher bombardment Hydrofoil
« on: 08 March 2016, 09:20:59 »
The Smasher bombardment Hydrofoil is the big gun of the Imagineer Task Force.  The lightly armoured 75ton chassis is built around the massive long tom artillery piece.  Packing 30 shells a single Smasher can lay waste to swathes of coastline with impunity and the Imagineer packs 2 of these little beauts.  2 LRT-5s give the Smasher token defense against surface and sub surface threats but the Smasher must lean on speed and the other parts of the task force to protect it from Aerial threats.

Even taking into consideration the presence of escorts, 7/11 MP is nowhere near fast enough to evade aero units.

Though a naval unit, I'd consider swapping out the LRT's for LRM's, since most threats encountered will be surface naval, hover, VTOL, WiGE, and aero units.

Hm. Just noticed the two tons of ammo; Might even be worthwhile to swap just one LRT for an LRM, giving a token defense against subs as well and still retaining usefulness against surface naval units.

How about reducing the speed to 6/9, switching it up to 85tons and 1T of LRT ammo - that's enough for an LB-2X to harass flyers - also an extra 0.5T of armour

Found this old thread by chance and thought it might be instructive, considering the naval direction of recent threads:

Yeah, I found that while concieving of the Imagineer Project - it's probably one of the big reasons I ended up with a submersible design that packs only a bare minimum of conventional weapons.  The simple fact is that, for the most part, the <101 ton combat vehicles are vastly more combat effective for price and survivability then the Super Heavies or the Large Support Naval's are and that, in my eyes, the best thing you could do with a Large Naval platform is act as a base of operations for Naval, Amphibious and Aerial assets - and this is something that current canon designs were quite dissapointingly lacking at, most of them being much more like current real world Naval Paradigms.  (sub capital missiles for orbital defense are also a nice use that just cannot be mounted on a 100T hull)

With the rules as they are 4 100T displacement hulls mounting 1 long tom each are significantly harder to deal with and more tactically versatile than 1 400T displacement hull mounting 4 long toms
