Mark II Clan vehicles.
« on: 19 October 2016, 16:09:35 »
There's gonna be a fair few of these and they are possibly for Dragon Cat's universe, thoughts and comments are most welcome.

Ishtar Mk II 'Tammuz'/Gilgamesh

With their holdings in the Inner Sphere boasting far greater resources than the Homeworlds could dream of as well as a large population base from which to recruit, the Horses Tourman grew rapidly but there were bottlenecks almost everywhere whilst the Horses activated what factories they could and drew heavily on orbital and mobile facilities to meet their production needs.

Looking at their armoured forces the Horses found them to be wanting.  Most were Clan designs and whilst heavy on firepower were often considerably weaken in terms of protection than their inner sphere counterparts.  One popular vehicle that came for criticism was the Ishtar wheeled support vehicle.  Whilst formidable in terms of firepower the Ishtar FSV was also a logistics nightmare and was becoming increasingly vulnerable on the battlefield.

But with greater resources to hand and no wars, at least for the moment to bother them save Pirate hunting and keeping an eye on the Falcons the Scientists of Clan Hell's Horses were tasked to update their Horses armoured inventory whilst retaining a commonality of parts and equipment.  The first to be looked at was the Ishtar.

A more powerful XL engine would push the tank to 64kph  whilst the hull was heavily re-worked into a more sleek and less easy to spot 6x6 platform in order to accomodate the engine.  The mixed autocannon armament was removed and instead replaced with a HAG-30 fed by an adequate 4 tonnes of ammo.  Dual LRM-15's joined the cannon in the turret, each launcher having an independent two tonnes of ammo to draw from.  Whilst anti-infantry firepower was increased with the addition of a quartet of machine guns, two mounted in the bow and two firing over the rear.

The original pair of ER medium lasers and the front mounted AMS were retained whilst the armour was slightly increased on the hull and turret.  Whilst more expensive to produce the Mark II was better at giving fire support and its HAG also worked very well as an anti-aircraft weapon.  Initially called the Ishtar Mk II, the crews and commanders of the units issued them pressed for a new name and eventually the name Tammuz was chosen as Tammuz was the consort of Ishtar.  This caused so many fights between the crews of the vehicles and dozens of Trials of Grievance. So a new name was chosen and this was finally found agreeable when the name Gilgamesh was adopted.

Hachiman Mk II 'Genji'

The Hachiman whilst a potent vehicle wasn't without its problems.  The biggest being its internal layout and the LRM-20 launchers.  To keep the space down the LRM's launched 5 missiles at a time using a clip to fire each group until all 20 had been fired.  Unfortunately this was prone to jamming and to put it politely, was a nightmare to repair and maintain.  The layout of the interior with its heavily compartmentalised interior provided excellent protection for the crew but also made movement in the vehicle difficult and it heavily affected crew communication.

With a mandate to improve upon the design the Hell's Horses Scientists kept the Hachiman as a missile support unit but replaced the LRM-20's with a pair of ATM-9's.  This allowed the SSRM-4 to be suppressed and removed as it was felt that the ATM would be able to defend the vehicle up close.  Six tonnes of ammo fed the two sleek box launchers whilst the original ER Medium lasers were retained, mounted between the two launchers in the turret.

The interior was also heavily reworked with the bulkheads removed and the crew space opened up.  The four crew would then sit together in a centralised fighting compartment with the driver at the front, the gunner and EW/radio operator behind him whilst the tanks commander had a more centralised position in under the unmanned turret.  The result was a longer and sleeker tank that would present less of a target on the battlefield.  For point defence the Mk2 fitted a single heavy machine gun firing over the bow.  Whilst short ranged the heavy bullets and rate of fire could do horrific damage to infantry in a burst.

With the new vehicle entering service the Mk II did initially have some supply problems as some official documents didn't mention the Mk 2 by name and units who fielded them often found dropships delivering parts for standard Hachiman's.  To fix this the Mk 2 was renamed the Genji.

Oro heavy Tank. 'Assegai'

The Oro was seen as neither fish nor fowl by the Inner Sphere recruits who were assigned to it.  Billed as an anti-aircraft platform the LB-20X was indeed a deadly threat against aircraft. If they came within its limited range.  Whilst they appreciated the large pulse laser the tank's exceptionally thin hide for a vehicle its size won it no fans.

The Oro design that emerged would be far more comparable to similar mass Spheroid tanks and would have a combined arms approach in mind, especially after the painful lessons of the Jihad and fighting in the Homeworlds.

Gone was the original weapons fix and in its place a pair of LB-10 autocannons each fed by a two tonne ammo bin whilst a Plasma Cannon was mounted between the two cannons.  The cannon drew on its own two tonne ammo bin whilst an ECM system fouled hostile targetting systems.  For point defence an A-Pod was mounted on the left and right side and could be triggered by proximity as well as command.

The big change was the engine, an XL fusion plant allowed for the increased warload and helped push the tank along despite its armour increasing from 5.5 to 8.5 tonnes.  The newly renamed Assegai would serve alongside the Oro HAG and was seen as an equivalent of machines like the Manticore as a Main Battle Tank.  It was still viewed as inferior to the Enyo Strike Tank due to its slower speed but the Assegai's firepower would earn it many admirers.

Iwisa Combat Vehicle.

Based on the hull of the Assegai the Iwisa (named after the Zulu club weapon) was built to be cheap and serve as a Garrison forces heavy tank.  Stripping out the expensive XL engine the Iwisa featured a large fuel cell engine capable of pushing the tank along at 64kph.

Whilst armed with 'new' weapons the Iwisa featured the chemical laser as its primary armament.  A pair of large chemical lasers and a quartet of mediums sit in the turret and are provided with plenty of ammunition to allow for sustained firing.  For anti-infantry defence the Iwisha bristled with six light machine guns. Two in the front, one on each side and one covering the rear.  Finally and somewhat curiously, a bulldozer attachment was added to the front of the tank.  This attachment let it dig its own firing pits on soft terrain whilst also allowing the tank to serve as a clearance vehicle if needed when not in combat.  It also let it shunt aside obstructions in built up terrain.

The tanks machine guns proved to be the most problematic system on the Iwisa.  Not because they jammed or had poor targetting systems, but because they stuck out from the side and rear of the tank.  And whilst the Iwisa had lots of external cameras and gave good awareness for the crew, it wasn't uncommon for a Iwisa to return to the hangar after an exercise missing a machine gun, usually scraped off by a tree or building.  Most crews opted to simply remove the side and rear mounted weapons and use the space for extra stowage.

Ares Mk II 'Nike'

Whilst easy to drive and comfortable for the crew the Ares was also renowned for being 'squishy' and fragile when under fire.  Opting to retain the simple and easy to maintain engine and popular layout the Hell's Horses Scientists changed little on the Ares.  It retained its ER Large laser although the barrel was also re-worked to help with the warping issues that many Ares experienced with repeated firings.
The LRM-15 was removed and replaced with an LRM-10.  Whilst firepower went down, endurance thanks to a larger number of missiles went up.  Each launcher was fed by its own 1 ton ammo bin.

The decision to remove the Artemis guidance system caused more than a few Trials but it was seen (eventually) as logical.  The Horses lacked the capacity to mass produce the seeker heads that could recive information from an Artemis system and these would be given over to the front line forces.  By using a simpler seeker and guidance package the cost of the launchers and missiles went down in both man-hour and resources used.  The weight saved was then used to somewhat increase the Ares armour whilst also refitting its electronics considerably.

A rugged ECM system was joined by a TAG riding in the turret.  Acting as a skirmish screen a Star of Ares could disrupt an C3 network as well as provide targetting data for friendly artillery assets.  Whilst the additional electronics did make the commanders life a bit harder, the small three man tank still performed well in tests and combat.  To differentiate between the two the Hells Horses would later rename the Mk II as the Nike and it would be called this in official papers.  Its crew (and those who worked on them) then of course called them Nicks.

Zorya Mk 2 Buyan Mk 3 UDV ' (Urban Defense Vehicle) Zemchug and Mk 4 Danica

Whilst mocked for its low tech approach, the Zorya light tank was easy to produce, easy to drive and a dream to maintain thanks to its 'farm machinery' engine and civilian vehicle layout.  Seemingly based on an ancient snow crawler design the Zorya remained in production because it was very much a cheap and cheerful design.

As they established their holdings the Horses saw a need to produce the Zorya again as they simply needed something, anything to fill gaps in the Tourman as well as defend against Pirate raids.  With the materials for high velocity autocannons in short supply the Scientists opted to alter the Zorya slightly and produced two self supporting variants.

The first removed the LB-5X simply because at the time the gun was needed on front line equipment, not secondary or tertiary forces.  Instead the Scientists opted for a lower velocity Proto AC-8.  Whilst the range was far shorter the firepower went up and with three tonnes of ammo there was no worries about running short in a fight.
The classic LRM-10 was retained in the turret giving the tank some long range punch but the Artemis guidance package was removed.
Finally an SRM-4 was fitted to fire forwards, making the tank more formidable at the usual ranges that Pirate Mechs and vehicles engaged at.

One big change was the installation of a Fuel Cell engine, the speed remained the same but the old Higgs 140 Multi-fuel engine was now a more modern and much quieter LBJ-101 Fuel Cell of the same rating.  Fortunately the engine was still easy to maintain and a quick change system for the fuel cells made it quicker and easier to refuel and lessened the logistics support needed somewhat.

As an offshoot of the Mark II refit of the Zorya, the Horses scientists looked at the Falcons example of an urban control vehicle.  Deciding to use a somewhat more 'PC' sounding Urban Defense Vehicle as the name the Zorya UDV was built to act both as a heavy unit in case of riots or major disturbances as well as a support vehicle for friendly forces in built up or heavy terrain.

Whilst retaining the same fuel cell and protection as the Mk2 the weapons were considerably altered.  In the turret a pair of SRM-6's each drawing from a ton of ammo provided the vehicles main punch, and with two tonnes of ammo there was the option to use different ammo types.
But surprisingly a Mech Mortar-4 was also installed in the turret along with three one ton drum magazines.  This flexible, simple and cheap weapon whilst an odd choice was vindicated in testing and exercises.  Finally a pair of light machine guns mounted in the bow and drawing from a shared one ton of ammo rounded the vehicle out.

Despite its utility though the UDV was not produced in great numbers and was never issued to front line forces.  It remained the property of garrison forces and training units.

The final version of the 'tractor' that saw service was more a variant of the normal Mk II, but featured the newly developed chemical laser.  With a large chemical laser replacing the PAC-8 the tanks dependency on ammunition went down slightly and it could fire more shots before needing to reload.  The weight difference a mere half a ton was instead put into thickening the tanks armour and increasing survivability slightly.  Common in garrison forces the Mk Buyan and Danica complemented each other well and when supported by Zemchug UDV's they could hold a position against all but the most determined or desperate of Pirate groups.

Svantovit Mk II/Vajra

The Svantovit was seen as a Maxim IIC by the Inner Sphere and they may not have been too far wrong.  Designed to carry troops to battle and then support them the Svan gave good service but it was getting a bit dated.

Its main flaws were its thin armoured hide and the general short range of its weapons that meant exposing the vehicle to too much return fire, and this was fire its armour could not withstand, especially when it stopped to unload its troops.

Whilst seeking to retain the Svan's firepower the Horses looked at 'sprucing up' the design to make it more capable on the modern battlefield.  Central to this was the instillation of an XL engine.  This saved a considerable amount of weight whilst allowing the vehicle to retain its formidable speed.

Built around a 5-ton cargo bay that was built to take Elementals the new bay featured hook up points to charge the Elemental's batteries from the Svan's reactor as well as enough supplies to rearm a point even if fully depleted.

The dual LRM-5's were mounted in the turret and they were joined by a pair of ER Medium lasers to give hard fire against hostile vehicles and battle armour.  Anti infantry firepower was also improved with a pair of AP Gauss rifles, also mounted in the turret.

An ECM was fitted to the comms system whilst a bow mounted Light TAG would allow the Svan to call on artillery support in the approach to its target or whilst supporting its troops.
An extra ton of armour was also added to help protect the IFV and its precious cargo.  Whilst more expensive and difficult to maintain (the turret took two years of field modifications to get working correctly), and thanks to the added weight a bit more difficult to pilot the Mk II was accepted into service. Due to the sheer number of changes the tank was officially renamed the Vajra. Although its crews referred to it the SLUFF, (Short Little Ugly Fat ******) all be it in an endearing way thanks to its squat but broad profile and 'fat rear end'.

A variant was also produced with an eye to acting as a support vehicle, packing greater firepower at the cost of its troop capacity and some speed.  Called the Vijaya the hovercraft's speed dropped to 120kph but it retained the XL fusion plant of the Vajra.

A pair of Mech Mortar 8 and their shared 5 ton's of ammo provided the main firepower and whilst short ranged was useful in built up terrain and was immune to jamming or an AMS.  The flexible ammunition system also allowed for different types of munitions to be loaded.  A pair of ER Small lasers were also mounted in the turret and provided firepower in the mortar's dead zone.
A pair of LRM-5's were also mounted in the bow of the machine, each drawing from a shared ton of ammo.  Whilst slower than the Vajra, the Vijaya would often be sent ahead of the IVF and get into a firing position to provide covering fire.  In a full combined Star of the two the ideal mix was seen as 6 Vajra IFV's supported by four Vijaya's.  This would bring 30 Elemental battlesuits to an engagement as well as a solid mix of heavy firepower both direct and indirect.

Nandaka Assault Helicopter.

Whilst the Donar and Balac doing well in service it was felt that there was a need for a 'heavy' attack VTOL.  This came from experiencing machines like the fearsome Yellowjacket VTOL that could provide heavy firepower at long range on a highly mobile platform.
With the mindset of 'anything they can do we can do better' the Scientists of Clan Hells horses looked at producing their own heavy VTOL.

At 30 tons the new machine was heavy but its XL engine still pushed it along at over 112kph, faster than the Yellowjacket.

Like the Inner Sphere machine the new VTOL would feature a large single weapon, in this case a HAG-20 drawing from 3 tons of ammo.  Initially the design featured a turret but the weight of the cannon and the stresses in firing made it a maintenance nightmare. In one test whilst firing on the move the recoil ripped the turret clean off nearly causing the loss of the whole machine.  Instead the HAG would be mounted in a semi flexible mount along the belly and chin, but the VTOL would still have to point its nose at a target.

Taking advantage of their lighter weapons the Scientists then installed a SRM-4 and an ER medium laser on each side of the body in short wing like mountings.  These provided extra stability and lift whilst also letting the new helicopter carry a significant warload.  The SRM-4's ammo was a single shared ton but this was deemed adequate.

The big debate about the design was the seating arrangement.  On the Donar the cockpit was built for test down Aerospace phenotypes, but it was argued that any Spheroid recruits who survived training would not be that small and a tandem seating arragement was not suitable.  Other Scientists were concerned that their machine would be piloted by Spheroids and pushed for tandem seating.  In the end after a two day long debate the pro-Spheroid group won out.  The cockpit would be similar to the Balac's with the pilot sat in front of and slightly below the gunner.

The new VTOL was called the Nandaka, named after the sword of Vishnu and was accepted for service with testing in short trials against forces of Clan Jade Falcon as well as the more usual pirate hunting 'training' runs.  Whilst the chin mounted HAG was 'a pig' to maintain the speed of the VTOL and its heavy hitting punch would allow it to engage as its pilot wished.  It also outran and out ranged the fearsome Yellowjacket and the HAG made the Nandaka a threat to VTOL's and Tanks whilst also being able to sand away at Mech armour.

Whilst the larger Garuda was more heavily protected and thanks to its turret mounted weapons, able to engage at almost any angle, the Nandaka's firepower and general performance helped keep it in service and production.  Pilots of both machines often had a friendly rivalry and it was common to see mixed Star's of Garuda and Nandaka's working together.

Sharur Skirmisher

Whilst the Epona was a superb (if somewhat difficult to pilot) vehicle, whilst establishing their holdings the Horses simply didn't have the capacity to produce the fearsome Hovertank.  And whilst this was rectified the feared shortfall of a combat hovertank in the Horses Tourman did lead to a need for an emergency vehicle to fill the gap.

What emerged was nicknamed the 'Epona-lite' but was officially called the Sharur Skirmisher.  A 25 ton hovercraft that was very heavily inspired by the Epona but was actually based on the Saracen hovercraft and was indeed built at a dissued and originally badly damaged finishing facility that built the tanks for House Marik.  Shaving off weight and increasing the speed thanks to an XL engine the new vehicle that emerged was in essence half an Epona.  Mounting a pair of Medium pulse lasers, a SRM-4 and an ER small laser in its turret the design also featured a TAG and ECM mounted in the cockpit.

One feature that did cause problems was the nose mounted A-Pod.  Whilst useful when overruning an infantry position, the A-Pod's triggering system was always a bit sensitive and crews had to make double sure it was disabled before exiting the vehicle after a few unfortunate accidents.

Because refurbishing the facility took so long, by the time the Sharur entered service the first new Sphere built Epona's were starting to be constructed and the Sharur consumed a large amount of needed resources for a small combat unit and production was stopped after four years with its production site being converted to help produce the more flexible Hephaestus and other vehicles. The Sharur though was popular in service and it defied attempts to remove it from service to the point that low scale production was re-started prior to the attacks on Lyran space.

Nice designs  :D

The Svantovit designs I especially like.  8)

Enough to want to borrow them in gameplay and for my part of Dragon Cat's timeline (Fire Mandrill/Rim Collection)

First thoughts are surprising lack of Chemical Lasers, second an overuse of AP Gauss third a lack of heavy or improved heavy lasers

There are good designs nothing overly wrong with any of them just little tweaks

I especially liked the fuel cell and ProtoMech AC use making do with what they've got

Yeah I was a bit worried about the many AP gauss but I can easily replace them.  Heavy lasers have their place, its just on a dedicated machine.  They are way too heat intensive to be included unless you build a machine round the concept of them, but i've already got some ideas and I kinda forgot about Chemical lasers (and didn't put SAW on 'experimental' so they didn't show up.), lemme have a looksee later after work to see what I can come up with :) Already got an idea for an Oro.

*edit* I made one Chemical Laser machine the Iwisa in the Oro part. I did that one before work, i'll look at the others later to trim down the APGR cheese!

Chentu Assault tank.

Whilst the Wolf designed Carnivore was available to the Clans it was either through trial or trade and the Horses wanted their own equivalent.  Tasked to make a superior machine to the Carnivore the Horses scientists looked at the examples of Spheroid tanks they had faced as well as hard won knowledge.  The result twas the Chentu.  At 85 tonnes the design was heavier than the Carnivore and less protected, but it was more flexible and had a greater throw weight.

Its turret was dominated by a Gauss Rifle and an Improved Heavy Large laser, whilst an AMS and Micro-pulse laser sat atop the armoured bulk of the turret, hidden behind receding pannels until they fired. The bow of the tank also featured a VLS launcher for an ATM-6 which, like the Gauss rifle was fed by 3 tons of ammunition.  The launcher is split into two 3-cell launchers, not a single large box launcher.  An ECM was fitted to the powerful communications equipment and the interior was designed with the aid of veteran tank crews.

The machines XL engine could push it along at 64kph whilst its tracks were split into four sub tracks, each individually mounted and suspended, allowing the Chentu to tackle rough terrain with ease whilst also providing a comfier ride for the crew.  The fighting compartment was roomy and had facilities to cook, rest and a chemical toilet for long duration missions.  With all three crew sat together their main view of the outside world was taken from dozens of cameras that would give a better view than a mere vision port.

Whilst more expensive to produce than the Carnivore as well as requiring more maintenance the Chentu's firepower, flexibility and the fact it was home grown and home produced saw it entering service as a main assault tank.  Its firepower would be used to support more numerous hover tanks in combat.

One variant did emerge and that would serve as a fire support vehicle.  This completely altered the weapons fit with the turret gutted of its big guns along with the ATM's removal when it was found that the VLS launcher interferered with the tanks main armament.  A pair of Streak LRM-20's and a pair of normal LRM-10's (with the Artemis fire control system added) filled the turret whilst ammunition storage included four tons for the Streak's and two ton's for the LRM-10's.  This cut into the Chentu's interior and made it less comfortable to serve in but the firepower it could bring was very formidable.

Finally a pair of micro-lasers were mounted in the forwards hull, mockingly called headlamps by their crew they offered little extra protection.  Still the cost of the Streak launchers did keep this variant from being common and it was more often a Star Commander's vehicle.  Because of the considerable differences between this and the normal Chentu the missile support variant was renamed the Shrivatsa.

There will also be a HAG version that will be done later as I don't have access to Solaris Skunk werks here at work.  It'll be simple though, replace the Gauss with a HAG-20 and add 2 tons of armour.

As always folks thoughts about this machine or any of the others are most welcome :)

Ooh nice :) I did have an idea for a small hover/wheeled platform that would act as a high speed interdictor and infantry hunter.  Seeing as the Horses use Elementals and PAL armoured troops like mad, yet lack a suitable assault battlesuit of their own to counter IS ones (or horror's like the Ironhold) why not use a vehicle as a heavy BA hunter?  A cluster of ER smalls and some pulse lasers on a fast platform, slap an ECM on it for anti-C3 shenanigans and bob's your uncle.

I'm trying to stay away from Munchyness, is why I try steering clear of clan LPL's (or clan pulsers in general).  These vehicles all have some flaws, but try to be 'Clan' like the 3060 vehicles, going for firepower over protection whilst working in some deliberate weaknesses with weapon choices etc.  Like the Chentu, it does not need the ATM-6 and would probably be better served with some more armour and a few point defence lasers rather than 6.5 tons of missiles and launcher as an example.

Nothing wrong with the Large Pulse Laser on a vehicle - it and the ER Large Laser are probably the most efficient weapons going for vehicles with a fusion engine.  They are also quite boring but efficient.

They've got to go on the right hull though - like the Ares a large laser on a missile boat goes together for a support craft.

A large pulse on an infantry carrier is a decent mix since you need to get in the middle of the action to drop your elementals off.

Mars Ulator

Whilst the Mars XL series performed well, especially the Mars HAG these vehicles were simply too slow by modern standards to support a fluid battlefront.  Whilst the traditional Mars and Mars HAG were both seen as defensive weapons rather than offensive due to their sheer lack of any speed.

With the introduction of the Aithion Assault Transport, a vehicle designed to advance towards dug in opponents.  Disgorging Elementals into the trenches and city streets whilst giving and taking fire, it was felt that the brute needed an escort.

This initially started as a lightweight anti-infantry vehicle armed with a quartet of ER Flamers and backed up by an array of machine guns, these would be used to keep hostile infantry suppressed and clear out fighting positions the Aithion had damaged or cracked open.  But with the Mars getting older the design grew and then changed, and changed again, with tonnage piling on.  The end result was the Mars Ulator (Avenger).

At 100 tons the Ulator is not a small vehicle and its XL engine can sometimes struggle to push it to its top speed of 56kph.  Unlike the Mars the Ulator features a pair of tracks instead of four, these massively broad tracks help reduce its ground pressure and stop it bogging down, but they are a nightmare to repair if a track is thrown due to their weight.

Whilst armoured like a Mars, the big change comes in the type of armour.  Like the Aithion the Ulator uses Ferro-Lamelor plate a staggering 16.5 tons of it, making the Ulator extremely tough despite lacking the sheer thickness of armour on vehicles like the Spheroid Gurteletier MBT.

Designed to operate not as a close escort but overwatch vehicle for assaulting forces the Ulator's armament is built to engage at long range.  To do this the tank is a 'gausszilla' featuring a single standard Gauss Rifle and a pair of HAG-20's in a triple mount (the standard rifle is mounted in the middle) on the huge turret.

Each weapon has its own 3 ton ammo bin making reloading a Ulator a rather slow process despite the ammunition being loaded in six shot clips.  On the left and right edge of the turret, raising independent of the main guns is an ER medium laser, taking advantage of the engines cooling systems.

The well armoured bow of the tank features a pair of retractable SRM-6's each with their own ammo bin whilst four light machine guns are spread around the tank to cover every quadrant.  These defensive weapons only have a half ton of ammo between them but this is seen as enough firepower for self defence.  Finally an ECM is hard wired into the electronics to jam hostile targetting systems.

Doctrinally the Ulator will cover an Aithion as it approaches a target, moving ahead of the assault vehicle and engaging targets as they appear.  In city fighting, usually deadly terrain for a tank the Ulator is capable operating thanks to the HAG's having a high degree of elevation allowing it to engage targets that emerge to fire down onto it.  Against hostile Mech's the trio of gauss weapons can sandblast a targets armour whilst the delivering powerful armour penetrating punches as well.  And thanks to the weapons range they can open fire whilst targets are still dots on the horizon.

Unfortunately for the Horses the difficulty in producing such thick slabs of Ferro-Lamelor armour and the cost of such armour kept production rates down and these large, expensive and formidable tanks often found themselves being the command vehicle for a Vehicle Binary and it was rare to see more than 2 at any one time in most Binary's.

Because of the expense and slow production of Ferro-Lamelor armour another Ulator was produced that used cheaper Ferro-Fibrous compounds and made up for the tonnage with thicker base armour that lacked the resistant properties of Ferro-Lamelor.

Why 4 LRM5 I know it's better use of tonnage but what's the in universe rationale?

The way I look at it I'd rather have a single LRM15 with Artemis over 5 small racks

It makes it possible to fire on multiple targets since LRM ammo is in 5 point groups anyway, the LRM15 can only hit one target.
And I was thinking 1 ton of Smoke ammo means 4 hexes targeted instead of 1.
