The Starnake was the first Clan Assault OmniMech. Debuting in 2859, designers opted to supplement their current OmniMech assets with as large an OmniMech as possible, but one that could keep up in combat and out-duel most Assault BattleMechs it would face. Having won design schematics as well as a pair of newly constructed 100-ton Steel Viper Storm Giants in 2856, the designers reworked the design, and renamed it after the mythical giant white cannibals of Indigenous American myth. They presented the test types for the new OmniMech to the Khans of Clan Coyote in June 2858. Within a week, Khan Tchernovkov ordered a full expansion of production, and that the first production run be completed by the end of the following year.
Clan Coyote produced this monster OmniMech at the Richard OmniMech Production Complex on New Kent, their newest and most advanced First Generation OmniMech factory, established by Richard (Remer). New Kent was chosen not just because of the origins of the Starnake’s design, but because of the close proximity with Clan Coyote’s OmniMech collaborators, Clan Sea Fox, who had an enclave on New Kent and would share in production and protection of the complex. New Kent was also close to Clan Coyote’s oldest and closest ally, Clan Wolf; their newer colony on Tranquil was developing must faster than early estimates. Production deadlines were difficult, especially reproduction of the New Kent Type 50, which was still in production on the other side of the planet. However, the first run was partially completed by the end of 2859.
The scenario was almost ideal. New Kent was almost completely self-sufficient with the Sea Foxes providing ample raw materials mined from Eagle Crater astrobleme. In return, the Foxes kept 10% of the Starnake production, making the Starnake the standard Sea Fox Assault OmniMech. When Omni Technology became ubiquitous, the Starnake hit the open market and became a valuable export. Clan Wolf fielded many Starnakes in their Touman.
New Kent was shared with two other colonies, a small Ice Hellion holding, and the Steel Viper capital. The Hellions had little interest in the Starnake, as it was outside of their combat doctrine to field large (or slow) ‘Mechs in combat. The Steel Viper colony posed a far greater threat, but the Vipers had mostly self-isolated since the “Traitor Khan’s” treachery. The ascendence of Sanra Mercer shortly before the factory’s completion ensured the Steel Vipers did not significantly probe the factory’s defenses for over a century. However, the Starnake’s origins were not forgotten, and the following century provided ample time for Vipers’ “sour grapes” the mature into a deadly vintage.
Capabilities
The Starnake massed 100 tons on paper, though in practice it always appeared to be just slightly less massive (though significantly taller) than the later Dire Wolf. The Starnake’s head was widened compared with the original Storm Giant, with paneling on the front of the cockpit, a nod to the Starnake’s mythical large, wide eyes. Reproducing the Storm Giant’s 400-rated “New Kent Type 50 XL” Extra Light Engine gave the Starnake considerable speed for an Assault OmniMech, while 15 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor, and 35 tons of Pod Space gave it staying power and punch. It was also extremely expensive, the weapon of a rich Clan.
In its Primary Configuration, the Starnake modified the Storm Giant’s mix of SRMs, LRMs, and Ultra Autocannon, adding an ER Large Laser for added direct energy firepower at range. Configuration A, perhaps its most intimidating standard configuration, was modeled after the Titan Star League prototype, wielding energy weapons and SRMs. Like its predecessor, this configuration had significant overheating issues, and had to be used carefully. Configuration B mimicked the Highlander, combining Jump Jets, a Gauss Rifle, lasers, and missiles. Configuration C drew inspiration from the oldest Hegemony BattleMech, the Mackie. D Configuration was a missile boat in the tradition of the Longbow. Both Configurations E and F identified with the Awesome. E runs cool and combined ER PPCs with Jump Jets (but no point defense), while F dropped the Jump Jets and replaced the PPCs with paired over-under Large Laser/Large Pulse Laser. A, C, and F all ran very hot, while prime and B mimicked jack-of-all-trades Assault BattleMechs like the Atlas and Highlander, and ran relatively cool.
Heat management and weapons brackets were extremely important for the Starnake, especially on New Kent. Configurations A, C, and F, again the hottest for this Omni, were never deployed on New Kent. Clan Coyote also assigned the Starnake only to seasoned pilots who were adept at heat management, considering the Coyote MechWarrior was likely to need as much maneuverability as possible while dueling Marauder IICs, Warhammer IICs, and the occasional Kingfisher.
The Starnake was the most widely produced Assault OmniMech ever, and remained a viable Assault OmniMech for over 100 years. Despite massing and costing more than the Thunderbird or Kingfisher, the Starnake actually was more common in 2900, with higher rates of production and sales facilitated by Clan Sea Fox. While OmniMech incompatibility between Extra Light Fusion Engines and Endo Steel would eventually be resolved, the space constraints of an Assault OmniMech chassis allowed the Starnake to always have some exploitable advantage, even against newer OmniMechs eschewing an XL, Endo Steel, or Ferro Fibrous for Pod Space. As mechanized Battle Armor infantry tactics became common with Elementals, the Starnake even underwent a few cosmetic changes, including migrating weapon systems to the arms to mount Elementals.
Deployment
The death blow for the Starnake was dealt in 2963, decades before Clan Coyote’s territorial losses began in earnest. Their fortunes shifting, Clan Coyote brought an end to their punitive fifteen year-long campaign against Clan Cloud Cobra (for their involvement in the death of Corian Tchernovkov). The Coyote operations were halted abruptly after Coyote saKhan Kielman killed Khan Levien in a Trial of Grievance over Coyote losses as a result of the Cloud Cobra campaign. Clan Coyote's first priority was rebuilding Beta Galaxy after its years of attrition against the Cobras (FM: WC, p. 50).
Thinking this was a moment of weakness, Clan Steel Viper saw an opportunity for revenge, and at the same time initiating a long-overdue expansion and consolidation of its capital New Kent in one strike. When Clan Steel Viper attempted a series of Trials of Possession for territory and 3 full Stars of undelivered Starnakes at Richard OPC, the scope of the Trials were almost a complete surprise. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, they had long grown too complacent on New Kent; Clan Ice Hellion had already ceased most of its activity against the Coyotes on New Kent after the debacle with at the Ernst OPC Talaria facility nine years earlier.
The Steel Viper Trials began with short notice on the 24th of May. The Coyote’s 89th Reserve Battle Cluster did not even field the undelivered Starnake in the face of Frontline Viper forces, primarily due to bureaucracy involving Starnake heat management and underperforming solahma MechWarriors present to defend the factory. While this was not the first time Clan Steel Viper had won Starnake OmniMechs from Clan Coyote, the emboldened Vipers shocked everyone with their next move. After taking a few weeks to recover from their losses, on 7 July Khan Royce Chapman ordered a subsequent Trial of Possession for the Richard OPC itself. The Vipers bid for the factory included the very same Starnake OmniMechs they had taken weeks earlier (using the Viper name, Storm Giant (Omni)). However, the delay had allowed the Coyotes sufficient time for the depleted Beta Galaxy to relieve the Coyote’s 89th Reserve. The Long Fangs were able to redeploy in time because they were currently rebuilding after the cessation of hostilities against Clan Cloud Cobra (FM:WC, p. 50). Additionally, Clan Sea Fox, citing their interests in the factory, also provided elements of their Alpha Galaxy to the defense, but these were bid away early with a guarantee from Clan Steel Viper that Clan Sea Fox would still be entitled to 10% of the production in exchange for raw materials.
Even under-strength from years of fighting the Cloud Cobras, Beta Galaxy was still Clan Coyote's heaviest formation, and put up overwhelming resistance to the Steel Viper assault. As fighting for the factory escalated, reserve elements above the cutdown were mobilized on both sides. SaKhan Eustace Breen, in charge of the operation, decided to join the Trial with her Keshik on 9 July, but died in the fighting. Enraged with the Coyote resistance on their own capital and the death of his saKhan, Khan Chapman ordered his troops to disengage, and “honorably” informed the Coyote defenders the factory would be raised from orbit the next day by the CSV Dark Asp, to the horror of both the Coyotes and Foxes. After a devastating Trial of Possession for the space above the factory between Steel Viper navy and the Beta Galaxy’s Aerospace Trinaries and its naval escort, the CCS Ancestral Home (after which its K-F drive failed limping home to Tamaron for repairs), it was obvious the Starnake’s factory was doomed. No relief fleet would be available in time to prevent the Dark Asp from its bombardment. However, Coyote and Fox forces, technicians, and engineers refused to evacuate from the factory. The next morning, the Dark Asp raised the factory, killing all Coyote civilians in the process.
The incident was not without repercussions, but the fading Coyotes no longer had the political clout to exact revenge. The Steel Vipers’ actions were condemned by the Clan Grand Council, even by the Khans of Clans Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Cloud Cobra. However, Coyote Khan James Kielman’s calls for Steel Viper Absorption were blocked by several Clans, including Clan Cloud Cobra and, surprisingly, Clan Snow Raven. Remaining Starnakes did not disappear instantaneously, but dwindling Coyote prestige began to tarnish the Starnake’s legacy, so many Starnakes remain in various states of repair in Brian Caches and training units throughout the Kerensky Cluster. The Sea Foxes sought their revenge for the incident by instituting stiff price increases against Clan Steel Viper for all future raw materials taken from their Eagle Crater mining operations, a major hinderance to Viper Crossbow and Battle Cobra production for years to come. As for the Coyotes, Richard OmniMech Production Complex was Clan Coyote’s last major facility on New Kent. With their fortune waining, the Coyote Khans decided to reassign only second line and solahma units to protect the Clan’s limited interests remaining on world.
(Please forgive me for any confusion, but it is quite reasonable to mistake the Starnake for the Storm Giant, especially considering the Coyote OmniMech was designed from captured schematics for the Viper Assault BattleMech. - S.gage)
