Conventional Ground Attack Wisdom

Is there some thought, somewhere, on thrust-ratings for zoom'n boom on the Low Altitude Map, by Conventionals?

When unladen?

I know everyone want's fasta, but when was that one cost of a last point too dear?

… To oversimplify, "Did the Guardian need another thrust point?" :-\

I think the thing is that laden aircraft suffer a movement penalty. This doesn't matter as much on normal ground maps but it would if they are being chased by something else. Other than that I'd say bomb concentrated targets and strike isolated ones, strafe only if they can't shoot back (like taking out a convoy of mechanized infantry or supply trucks)

Mostly good advice, except that bombing concentrated targets needs to be done from as high altitude as possible, even to the detriment of accuracy. If you fly low enough that more than one of those units can shoot you, you WILL die.

99% of the time, aero units are vultures, not eagles. It's better to keep circling and wait until your ground buddies can isolate something than to try for a group and die.

For conventionals, the boeing jump bomber is only 64 BV for 4 bomb slots, and moves 8/12 with all 4.  Since it is only 64 BV, it is a great candidate for very accurate dive bomb missions, as it has no value after the bombs are dropped and by base rules even if destroyed it still gets to make it's bomb attack.  This kind of conventional wants to be as fast as possible to sneak past any enemy air cover.  Something like a drake 35 ton medium fighter, with 6/9 base speed and 389 BV, you probably want to keep around after the bombing run as it has decent guns and even flying 4/6 under a 7 bomb load, it can hold it's own against other fighters when it wins initiative thanks to medium and long range guns countering its low speed.  A mechbuster on the other hand, with the 5/8 speed, can carry 10 bombs moving at 3/5, so it really struggles with it's short range gun to defend itself while trying to maneuver for a bombing run, meaning it doesn't have the thrust to carry bombs in contested air space.

One thing I think is interesting is that CFs- or ASF for that matter- would not be, by the rules, my go to for a true Wild Weasel b/c the munitions rules and thus the IRL strike package plans break down.

VTOLs are better IMO for WW but they cannot fly in with the ground attack craft or CAS missions without a lot of planning.

But this also gets into the break down between BT 'campaign/wargaming' and table top pick up.
