What's the difference between Escape Pod and Life Boat?
« on: 27 February 2021, 12:44:36 »
So, after read techmanual, it seems that Escape Pod is usually better while Life Boat is cheap and more stable, but is it correct?

And what would be Life Boat's advantages over Escape Pod? The cost and more time for life support are the obvious points but what is more?

Also is using Escape Pod requires some skills to pilot it?

escape pod if near planetary body, Life boat if at JS a bajillion km away from anything or expecting a pick up.

Their capacities are also different.  As Wolf72 said, Life Boats are when your only hope is pick up by another ship.  Escape Pods give you the option to attempt reentry, but at a cost of capacity and endurance.  Personally, I do require a piloting roll to survive reentry.  It makes it important who makes it to which Escape Pods.  If all your pilots cram into one, that bodes ill for the rest...

So, Escape Pod when you can expect planetary reentry, and Life Boat when you have really no hope for survival other than wait for rescue and need to keep your life slightly longer until then. Thanks.

And it would be possible that most crew are trained to operate Escape Pod.

An another possibility is some crewmembers are also the pod pilot in addition to their basic duty. I remember that, in Halo: Combat Evolved(although not Battletech universe), the pilot of escape pod in Pillar of Autumn wears pilot suit.

It's only 20 XP in AToW to add Piloting/Spacecraft at level 0, and another 10 to get it to level 1.  That makes it very reasonable for crew to add.

It is no wonder that driving escape pod is the part of their crew training then. Thanks.

Think where the game designers got the idea . . .

Lifeboat

vs

Escape pod

One gives you some mobility/control . . . the other just gives you a last resort in a aeroshell.

The aeroshell is important, though.  Reentry (to a habitable atmosphere) can extend your life well beyond what a Life Boat can...

Sure . . . but if you bail out at the zenith or nadir jump point you are going to depend on someone coming to get you.  Worse would be a inter-system freighter who has an emergency way out on the eliptic . . . can your escape pod even get a signal out that gets picked up?  The lifepod can at least push you back towards civilization.
