a fighter with strange cargo
« on: 23 October 2021, 16:12:13 »
so as shown with the HRN-10 "Harrington" i tend to think a bit outside the box. and because of this, a fighter meant to be a BA/PA(L) dropper

Code: (CC-X01 Cucoo) [Select]

Mass: 100 tons
Frame: Unknown
Power Plant: 300 Fusion
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph

Armament:
     2 ER PPC
     2 SRM 4
Manufacturer: Unknown

Communication System: Unknown
Targeting & Tracking System: Unknown
Introduction Year: 3145
Tech Rating/Availability: E/X-X-X-D
Cost: 7,226,250 C-bills

Overview
an experimental design, the CC-X01 "Cucoo" is an attempt at using an assault class fighter to be able to transport a lance of battle armor or PA(L) to the surface of a planet reletively undetected as part of an airstrike against a surface target.

Capabilities
Armed with a pair of ER PPC's and a pair of SRM-4s with one ton of ammunition between them the most important part of the craft seems to be the eight tons of cargo, meant to be able to "drop" its payload of armor, (or bombs) without sacrificing the speed that underwing mounts would eat. its speed is comparable to other craft of its weight class, however its weapons load is anemic due to the cargo bay.

See the Clan Kirghiz C and Capellan Yùn aerofighters for a couple canon designs that also drop battle armor.

ASF Battle armor carriers seem underexploited in general.   For airborne insertion, it matters whether you are using the SO rule or not which would reduce the number of piloting skill rolls for a heavily armored fighter like this.

This design is also quite relevant for space insertion where you flyby an enemy large craft and drop some battle armor marines onto it's hull.

Given the rarity of needing this function, it seems to be better suited to be a pod configuration of an Omni-Fighter than a single fighter dedicated to this purpose.

You want to be able to use that space for other things if your not actively doing this single mission of dropping BA onto something.

Just need a Eisensturm configuration with a bay for a squad of BA.

The other option is Small Craft which are much more useful for this role since they can travel much further w/ better fuel rates.

yeah the Khirgiz and the Yun do things a lot better than this hunk of junk, probably could pass as the "We tried to do the same thing but lost the bid to them"

I think you have too much armor too, 40 tons should be illegal isn't it?  Above the Max for 100 tons.

The tonnage is legal with normal armor.  I'm less sure with Heavy Ferro...

As I recall, ASFs can mount half their tonnage in armor.  Checking Tech Manual, page 191 does indeed have a point maximum of 8 x tonnage.  800 points of armor for a 100-ton ASF is 50 tons with standard armor, or 40.5 for Heavy Ferro (-Aluminum for ASFs).

Yes, it's possible to avoid threshold crits from AC/20s...  ^-^
