Digging through my notes, I found this old design. I may have posted it on the previous incarnation of the board, but couldn't find it here. I think the only thing I didn't explicitly state was one ton of AMS ammo per system. Despite appearances, I don't have HMA, so all the numbers are hand jammed. If anything's off, I'd appreciate corrections.

==Overview:==
When Lockheed/CBM switched production from the older LCF-R15 to the
upgraded R16 model in 3052, a missed memo within the procurement department
resulted in a surplus stock of Maxell small lasers. The responsible
executive, in an effort to cover the mistake, generated a story about "the
R20 upgrade, of course". This white lie quickly gained a life of its own,
until two years later, the first R21 rolled off the production line. With no
actual design requirements beyond "use up the remaining stock of small lasers"
and "make it look something like the R20", the design engineers were unable to
justify access to Lockheed's production run of ferro-aluminum armor. This
actually worked in their favor, as it allowed them to fit one more small laser
into each wing. The only truly novel feature of the R21 was the addition of a
pair of anti-missile systems in the nose, which was justified as necessary
given the resurgence in naval technology at the time. The success of this
argument, however, bought the designers ten extra months of long hours to
implement refit kits to address shortcomings in electronic warfare
capabilities and the consequent havoc the solutions wreaked on the
notoriously troublesome communications and targeting systems.
==Capabilities:==
Like its predecessor, the R21 drops the R16's missile systems in favor of
energy weapons and increased armor. Double heat sinks provide sufficient heat
dissipation to enable continuous firing of the forward weapon systems. Working
from existing R20 air frames left insufficient room in the tail to mount the
R16's pulse laser once the new Edasich engine was installed, forcing retention
of the R20's original Maxell medium. Five point defense lasers in each wing
provide protection while the R21 closes its targets, while providing the
ability to switch to offense once in close. The increased armor protection
combines with the paired anti-missile systems to insure maximum survivability
throughout the R21's mission profile.
==Variants:==
Two refit kits are available for the R21, each replacing an anti-missile
system in the nose. The dorsal AMS can be replaced with an active probe,
while removal of the ventral system facilitates the installation of an ECM
suite. Lockheed/CBM refuses to comment on the sourcing for this equipment,
and charges well above the going rate for the electronics alone. Close
examination of the kits reveals extensive removal of serial numbers and other
identifying information, though the design is consistent with known Capellan
systems, and Capellan spare parts fit perfectly.
