Build a Post-Succession War IS Heavy Cruiser.
« on: 19 May 2022, 17:48:34 »
After the end of the Fourth Succession War and the formation of Second Star League in 3031, the Alliance of Successor States that won began planning for the return of a lot of LosTech and the redevelopment of their force and future cooperation with the Second SLDF began to plan the reconstruction of their military Aerospace Industry and part of that is the early plans for WarShip construction.

A cornerstone of the plan is the creation of what is being given the preliminary title of the "Universal Heavy Cruiser." This is an 800,000 to 950,000 ton heavy cruiser that is planned to be a multi-role mission platform for House Fleets and the SLDFN that can effectively serve as a solo unit, the flagship for Corvette and Destroyer Groups, and as an escort for future planned Capital Ships.

These ships were ordered in 3045 with the first Flight designed to fight what was precieved as the most likely potential enemy, small craft, ASFs, DropShips, and Light WarShips being the main targets in mind. However, during the Clan Invasion the specifications were altered to a second Flight due to the first 10 ships being too far in construction to be significantly altered. The Flight-II was redesigned to be a WarShip capable of killing any First Star League ship of similar tonnage and at least damaging and escaping ships heavier than it.

Batteries of NL/45s, Capital Missile Launchers, and POINT DEFENSES will serve both functions just fine...  ^-^

The initial Universal Heavy Cruiser design focused on missile armament, with forty AR-10 launchers as its primary armament, backed up by forty-eight large naval lasers capable of engaging both fighters and DropShips effectively. This was seen as a flexible weapons load, due to the deep ammunition bins (with 50 missiles of various types per launcher) capable of engaged combat while far from supplies, if need be. There was also provision for five squads of marines to have space within the crew quarters.

The design was rounded out with a relatively stout structure mounting substantial armor, engines capable of combat burns at 3g, provisions for a complete fighter wing and a squadron of shuttles, two DropShip collars, and additional sensor electronics to maintain battlespace awareness.

The Block II revision eliminated the missiles, as the ammunition required was deemed to be too heavy for the combat results against true WarShips. As well, the naval laser allotment was reduced by one-third. In their place, high-powered naval weapons were substituted, with sixteen large-calibre naval artillery cannons and a further sixteen heavy particle projector cannons taking their place. In order to handle the increased heat generation of these new weapons, substantial new heat sinking capacity was installed, at the expense of one-eighth of the ship's fuel load and two of her six shuttles.
